The Audi e-tron is available in a 5 seater configuration and two Trimline i.e. Premium Plus and Prestige. With the electronic Quattro all-wheel-drive system thanks to the two motors for each front and rear axle, the drive is what one should expect from a typical Audi.

The Audi E-Tron is the new kid on the block of mid-size luxury electric SUVs. It not only offers all the feel and features of a typical Audi but is also gentle upon our mother earth at the same time. The car gets the fantastic infotainment system from the brand, Audi’s MMI touchscreen system, and is loaded to the brim with tech. The backseat space and the cargo capacity are decent for the segment standards and could easily take care of those outstation trips.

The power is produced from a 95 kWh battery sending it to the two motors each in the front and rear axle. Together they provide an electronic all-wheel-drive and put a combined output of 355 horsepower and if put in Sports mode then briefly (~8 sec) one can get a maximum output of 402 horsepower. Overall making it a fun and practical SUV capable of going places without breaking a sweat.

Engine and Performance
7.8/10

The 2019 Audi E-Tron is a five-passenger electric SUV and the power comes from a 95-kWh battery pack. The power from the battery is sent to a pair of electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear axles, giving the E-Tron an electronic all-wheel-drive system. The maximum output from the powertrain peaks at 355 horsepower. But if you put the E-Tron in Sports mode and put the pedal to the metal, the SUV is capable of an 8-second 0-60mph sprint while putting out 402 horsepower.

Every E-Tron comes with 150-kW DC fast-charging capability that can juice it up to 80% in just 30 minutes. New owners can also enjoy 1,000 kWh of free charging through the growing Electrify America network. For those keen on home-charging this beast, Audi has paired with Amazon Home Services to simplify the purchasing and installation of a home charger that can take anywhere up to 8 hours to juice up the battery.

As with the case of any electric vehicle, the power delivery is smooth and pins one to the seat every time you press the pedal. It hits 0-60 mph in 5.5 sec which is fast but not Jaguar I-Pace or Tesla Model X fast. Although it gains in the ease of drive part which makes daily driving a breeze.

Ride and Handling

The ride quality is plush and comfortable. Its adaptive air suspension gives a very comfortable ride in all types of road conditions. The NVH of the car is superior when compared to the competition. The seats are big enough and supportive and the four-zone climate control takes care of everyone's comfort needs. The low center of mass from the battery pack mounting under the floor helps the whole vehicle feel balanced and confident, even though it isn’t tuned to be particularly sharp, firm, or performance-focused.

Braking

The brakes have all the heft and bites, necessary to tame those 355 horses. But the exclusion of lift-throttle regenerative braking takes away the one-pedal drive ease which can be enjoyed in the rivals. We feel Audi shouldn’t have given a miss to this feature and especially when the competitors are already offering this feature.

We don't have the 60-0 mph figures of the 2019 Audi E-Tron but considering the braking feel and bite, we feel that the E-Tron will have competitive time figures as compared to its competitors.

Fuel Economy
9.9/10

While the 2019 Audi E-Tron does offer reasonable torque and power, the downside is that all this does not translate into a long driving range.

With a driving range of 204 miles, it is the least among the three competitors on the list. The curb weight being the highest among all also does not help the matter here.

The Tesla Model X offers the Best Range in the Segment but it can’t catch up on the overall comfort, luxury quotient, and fit & finish level of an Audi.

Interior
8.5/10

The Audi R-Tron is a comfortable electric SUV and remains true to its marque. Its air suspension delivers a plush and stable ride on a variety of road surfaces, and the cabin sufficiently cuts out outer noises thanks to the dual-pane acoustic glass (available only in Prestige trim) and gives a quiet and calm driving experience.

Both the driver and passenger will love the comfort and supportive seats, and the quad-zone climate control system is powerful enough to keep all passengers comfortable and happy at the same time. Mind you the latter feature isn’t common to any other all-electric SUVs, so Audi scores few extra brownie points over its rivals here.

The seats in the Audi E-Tron offer good bolstering and support while providing adequate cushioning when compared to the other two. The Model X offers more headroom and legroom both at front and rear but the cabin misses most of the creature comfort features you can find on the E-Tron.

Infotainment

The 2019 Audi E-Tron comes with a plethora of features, to keep you entertained on your long weekend drives or office commutes. The dash is tech-rich, having two digital panels. The top screen handles the job of showing navigation and audio, while the bottom screen is for the HVAC controls.

The haptic feedback from the bottom touchscreen isn’t quite as intuitive as changing fan speed or temperature via a button or dial, but it still feels good to use. The lower touchscreen also recognizes the handwriting as well as a host of voice commands. A third screen sits directly in front of the driver, an all-digital, configurable instrument cluster that Audi calls a “virtual cockpit.”

This is the list of Features available from the infotainment system of the 2019 Audi E-Tron:

  • Android Auto and Apple Car Play Compatibility
  • 10.1” main touchscreen and 8.6” lower touchscreen
  • FM/AM Radio connectivity
  • USB Connectivity and Charging ports
  • Bluetooth Telephony and Connectivity to Multiple devices
  • Audi Digital Cockpit

Interior Features

As expected from an electric SUV of this category, Audi has bundled the 2019 E-Tron with a host of interior features. Some of the features include:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Audi's Traffic Jam Assist semi-automated driving system
  • Blind Spot Monitoring System
  • Auto-Dimming and folding Rear View Mirror

  • Power Adjustable Driver Seats with Memory Function
  • Ambient Lighting
  • Heated and cooled Leather Front Seats
  • Keyless Access with Push Button Start
  • Massage function for front seats (only available in Prestige trim)
  • Air-purifier with ionizer and fragrance diffuser (only available in Prestige trim)

Cargo Capacity

The 2019 Audi E-Tron offers 28.5 cu ft. of cargo storage space with its 2nd row up and 57 cu ft. with its 2nd row folded.

This means that there is no shortage of space for carrying big suitcases or carry bags or camping equipment inside the E-Tron. While power liftgate comes standard in both the trims of the SUV.

In terms of In-cabin storage space, there are plenty of bottle holders and cubby holes inside the E-Tron's cabin. Passengers will also be happy with the number of Storage Compartments in the Cabin of the E-Tron which are present under the armrests and the dashboard.

Exterior
7.0/10

At first glance, you might think it’s a Q5 or the new Q8, which has a similar stance and coupe-like roofline. Overall the design of the Audi E-Tron is neutral when compared to the gaudy looks of the Tesla Model X or the sleek and attractive silhouette of the Jaguar I-Pace. Other distinct cues are at the front of the SUV, its grille is unique as it is enclosed since there is no engine to cool. Likewise, at the rear, there are no exhaust pipes, just horizontal lines on each side of the bottom rear bumper. On the driver’s side front fender, just above the wheel arches, the E-Tron's charge port is located.

The SUV isn't small when compared to the ones in its segment. At 193 inches in length, the E-Tron is larger than its profile suggests, and just a few inches shy of the Q8. Making it compact translates into easy drivability and parking to and from tight spaces as well as city traffic a breeze.

Exterior Features

The 2019 Audi E-Tron has a good set of exterior features which is in line with the other Audi vehicles present in the US market. The Premium Plus trim and the Prestige trim of the E-Tron have minor exterior differences between them. Some of the features include:

  • Adaptive Suspension System
  • 20-inch wheels
  • Hands-Free open and Close Tailgate
  • Auto folding mirrors

Safety
9.6/10

The NHTSA gave the 2019 Audi E-Tron an overall safety rating of five out of five stars while the IIHS gave the 2019 Audi E-Tron the highest rating of Good in all its six parameters. The E-Tron's headlights received the highest rating of Good for. Also, the E-Tron earned the highest rating of Superior for its standard vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention systems. Thus we can safely say that the E-Tron is among the safest electric in the market.

Audi E-Tron vs Tesla Model X

There is no denying the fact that the Tesla Model X is the better SUV in terms of performance between the two. It flaunts a simple interior layout and best-in-class space. But when it comes to the quality and fit & finish level of the parts and the overall car the Audi E-Tron is leaps and bounds ahead of it. The Tesla, however, is big on power and space but the E-Tron scores better as an overall product with a badge as well as brand value backing it and making a better proposition for people looking to stand out with a luxury ride and at the same time being gentle on the mother earth.

Audi E-Tron vs Jaguar I-Pace

With Jaguar I-Pace being lighter of the two it has an edge with quicker acceleration as well as better mpg values between the two. But it misses on the towing capacity while the Audi E-Tron can tow up to 4000 pounds which could be a deal-breaker for many buyers. Other than that E-Tron has a much better and futuristic infotainment system compared to the dated and not so intuitive one on the I-Pace. Therefore these two features can tilt the scale in favor of the Audi E-Tron for people looking to buy a practical as well as luxury SUV.

Final Verdict

With the 2019 Audi E-Tron, Audi has tried to present to its customers an electric SUV that has all the potentials of a conventional SUV. The E-Tron has a dual electric motor that offers instant torque and an electronic Quattro system that can take care of those few off-road trails. The E-Tron not only offers probably the best build quality both in the interior as well as the exterior but also is the safest electric SUV which could probably last longer than most SUVs in this comparison. Hence, if the driving range isn't your top priority and power, practicality, and luxury are more important to you, the Audi E-Tron is an SUV that should be on your bucket list as an option that you should probably go for.
