The BMW 5 Series is offered in four main trims that are subdivided into two options i.e an RWD and an AWD xDrive variant. Right from its base trim, the sedan comes extremely well equipped with several interior features to provide an overall luxury experience. The base trim starts with the 528i that is priced at $49,950 for the RWD layout. It comes with a basic turbocharged straight-four motor and has some notable interior features such as adjustable drive settings, adaptive xenon headlights with circular LED accent rights, ambient lighting, and BMW Assist telematics. The 535i adds a more powerful and popular straight-six motor and adds a few interior features. 

The 535d has all the features of the 535i and the 528i but comes with a diesel motor. The range-topping 550i completes it with a top-of the line twin-turbo V8 motor that puts it closest to the performance-specced M5 sedan. The 550i comes only with a handful but truly premium features such as a 20-way adjustable multi-contour front seats and a hands-free power-operated tailgate operation that can be opened and closed by passing your foot under the rear bumper where the sensors are fitted.

We would recommend you the 528i trim if comfort is your primary concern but the 535i offers a better package with a better engine and leather upholstery. You can also further enhance your experience by choosing any upgrade packages such as the M Sport package, Executive Package that is offered in with the 550i trim and adds soft-closing doors.

The BMW 5 Series sedan starts off with a basic turbocharged 2.0liter I-4 motor and ends with a range-topping twin-turbo V8. We’ll take a detailed look at the basic straight motor for now.

The I-4 motor cranks out a maximum of 240 horsepower and 260lb-ft of torque. The power figures are not great for a luxury sedan from the performance aspect but would suffice for everyday activities and a relaxed highway cruising as well. 

The motor is extremely refined and remains silent almost all the time. The 8-speed automatic transmission manages the power from the engine quite efficiently and sends all of it to the rear wheels or distributes it among all 4 wheels on the xDrive variants. Since the suspension setup is on the softer side to maximize comfort, handling is anything but sharp but not utterly disappointing either. The adjustable drive settings do work quite well as expected but it is so little you can extract from the base engine owing to its mediocre power figures.

The Jaguar XF with its base motor pushes out the same amount of horsepower as the 528i but has a lower torque output. The Audi A6 also comes with a similar powertrain and has the least horsepower rating among the three but matches almost evenly with the 528i in terms of torque output.

The base engine of the BMW 5 Series allows it to offer one of the highest fuel efficiency in the segment. The 528i returns a city mileage of 23mpg and a highway mileage of 34mpg, both are impressive for a luxury sedan. The combined mileage is rated at 27mpg.

The Jaguar XF has a lower fuel economy than the BMW 528i and the Audi A6 also offers almost similar fuel economy numbers as the Jaguar XF despite being the least powerful on the lot.

The interior of the 528i is where all the positive points of the sedan lie. The cabin is laid out with an attractive design involving superior quality of materials for the panels and switches but it is not flashy though. BMW has given the interior a taste of its rich heritage with the classic twin analog gauges and the understated dashboard design along with the center stack that gradually leans towards the driver for a sportier feel. 

The front seats come with power adjustments and offer superb comfort levels but the available 20-way multi-contour seats are the best out there. The rear seats are also well contoured and supportive with superb cushioning, making for a comfortable ride at all times.

The Jaguar XF has a lower headroom for both the front and rear passengers as compared to the 528i but is overall comfortable for tall adults. The Audi A6 plays it right by offering superbly comfortable seats which makes up for the lower headroom space than the BMW 528i.

Infotainment

Each and every BMW 5 Series comes with a standard iDrive interface in it which is as impressive and intuitive as its rival, Audi’s MMI. The iDrive system comes with a sizable 10.2-inch display along with a rotary controller mounted on the center stack along with a touchpad to input handwritten gestures. The system also offers almost all the basic entertainment features such as a navigation system, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a 10-speaker sound system with a CD player, HD radio, an auxiliary audio jack, a USB port, and smartphone app integration.

The 528i comes with an elegant yet sports sedan design language, offering a great on-road stance with its masculine lines on its hood and side-profile.

The front-end looks mildly aggressive with BMW’s kidney-grille design and stretched xenon headlamps with LED rings. The rear-end looks quite understated with big wrap-around taillights and dual chrome-tipped exhaust pipe.

The Jaguar XF looks more aggressive and stylish than the 528i with its upswept front-end design and longer than average headlamp units. The Audi A4 comes with the most aggressive exterior styling as compared to the Beemer and the XF.

The BMW 528i comes with an excellent safety status with some respectable safety ratings, excellent build quality, and a generous list of safety features. The sedan received a 5-star rating from the NHTSA and an overall “Good” rating from the IIHS as well. The sedan comes with several safety features as standard including stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, and active front head restraints. 

The advanced braking system has a unique feature that periodically wipes the brake rotors to keep them dry in wet conditions. Another notable standard safety measure is the BMW Assist emergency communications system, which has an automatic crash notification, an SOS button, remote door unlock, and stolen vehicle recovery.
