Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk

Pros

Comfortable to drive, Heated Steering Wheel

Cons

The color of the car, It bucks when you go from a stop to driving at a stop sign

The performance is pretty decent. It'll go from zero to 90 lickety-split! It is not a big fan of steep hills (as it should be). Handles great in the snow and ice. No highway issues at all. Not sure of the exact MPGs but I drive it 42 miles roundtrip 5 days a week to work and back and I pay $2.79 for gas; $40 a week does it for me. The interior has leather seats and black rugs; good quality. I hav... Read more

2015 Jeep Cherokee Review

Pros

  • Powerful and refined V6 engine
  • Smooth and comfortable ride quality
  • State of the art technology
  • Trailhawk trim offers unique off-road capability

Cons

  • Sluggish performance with the inline-4 engine
  • Lower cargo capacity as compared to its peers

The 2015 model year sees updates in the form of a new engine stop-start system to save some fuel in the more powerful and less frugal V6 engine along with an optional frontal-cash mitigation system.

Overview

The Cherokee name has the reputation of offering a stellar offroad performance even in this crossover segment, but the mature and civilized ride quality in city conditions which is comfortable enough to be used as a daily is the standout feature. This makes it one of the strongest contenders in the segment.

The 2015 model year sees updates in the form of a new engine stop-start system to save some fuel in the more powerful and less frugal V6 engine along with an optional frontal-cash mitigation system. Prices start at $24,090 for the base front-wheel-drive trim and lock horns with the likes of the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, and the Honda CR-V.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The Cherokee is available in 4 trims for the FWD and 4WD drivetrains with an additional Trailhawk trim that is only available with the 4WD option. Many of the latest features are available from the base Sport trim itself, and there is not much difference between the Latitude and Altitude trim and the Trailhawk and Limited trim. Even for the fully loaded Limited trim, the prices are very competitive with its competitors.

We Recommend

Not buying a 4WD drivetrain with a Jeep would be a shame for the car itself, and thus, we would recommend buying Altitude trim which offers a lot of features as standard and misses out on the only features without which one can live with. All in all, the Altitude trim with 4WD drivetrain setup is the best configuration to buy a 2015 Cherokee.

Engine and Performance
7.2/10

The 2015 Jeep Cherokee is available with two engine options, a V6 and an inline-4 engine. The base 2.4L four-cylinder engine produces 184 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque that powers the front wheels as standard and one can also opt for the optional 4WD drivetrain.

The 9-speed automatic transmission is pretty smooth in most situations but the acceleration performance isn’t that great. The 9.5 seconds taken to reach 60 mph from a standstill and the 17.2 seconds to cover the quarter-mile is the clear indication of that.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is the most affordable car in this comparison, but it also has the lowest engine output of all, while the Toyota RAV4 is the most expensive one with a slightly better engine output. Yet, it is the fastest of the lot, and is followed by the Honda CR-V, despite having the highest power and torque figures. The Cherokee is the slowest of the lot but has the highest towing capacity amongst the cars present here.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

Jeeps have never really been known for their efficiency, and the Cherokee doesn’t surprise us either. It is rated for 22 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and the combined fuel economy is rated at 25 mpg. Not to forget, the 4WD powertrain would see a drop in efficiency by around 2 miles per gallon in each driving condition. The 15.8-gallon gas tank does a decent job as it can be driven for around 390 miles on a single tank of gas.

The Honda CR-V is the most efficient crossover here, and despite offering the smallest fuel tank, has the longest driving range in this comparison. The Toyota RAV4 is the next on the list, while the Outlander Sport has similar ratings as that of the Jeep Cherokee. The Outlander Sport gets an advantage in terms of range due to its large fuel tank.

Interior
7.9/10

The build quality and materials used inside the cabin of the Cherokee now seems a lot more premium and upmarket than what it used to be a few years ago. The quality gap between the Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee isn’t as wide as it used to, and that’s a good sign for the Cherokee buyers.

The seats offer comfortable seating positions with the driver seat getting sufficient to adjust, but the steering has limited height adjust which is strange, considering all cars have a similar range of adjusting. The rear seat offers great comfort on long rides as it also offers recline adjustability, but that does affect the luggage space.

The Cherokee offers the best combination of space for all its occupants, both at the front and the back but lacks in terms of cargo-carrying capacity. The CR-V offers similar front row space but lacks a bit in the rear seats but compensates with a much larger trunk capacity. The Outlander Sport on the other hand is the compact crossover in both passenger and cargo capacity. Major interior features include-

  • 12-Way Power Driver Seat with Power 4-Way Lumbar Support
  • 6-Way Passenger Seat with Fold Flat adjustability
  • Leather-Trimmed Heated Bucket Seats
  • 60-40 Folding Split-Bench Rear Seat
  • Heated Leather Steering Wheel
  • Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning
  • Garage Door Transmitter

How is the 2015 Jeep Cherokee SUV’s infotainment system?

Apart from the base Sport trim, all the trims feature the latest 8.4-inch UConnect touchscreen infotainment system which not only looks good inside the cabin, it also performs well.

The UI is simple and easy to navigate and has crisp graphics, whereas it can be controlled via a knob, touch-sensitive button, and voice command as well. It features navigation, satellite radio, and a 9-speaker music system by Harman/Kardon. Few key features include-

  • 8.4-inch Touchscreen UConnect 8.4A Display
  • 9-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system with subwoofer
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • Integrated Voice Command w/Bluetooth
  • Uconnect Access
  • GPS Antenna Input

Exterior
5.5/10

The Cherokee reminds us of the larger Grand Cherokee in terms of its appearance, and it does feel like a younger sibling of it. The large and bold grille with the chunky front bumper looks menacing with the slim headlamps flanked on either side.

The headlamps although look too slim and disproportionate with the rather large front fascia of the car, but that depends on the personal tastes of the individual. The flared wheel arches, the roof rails, and the black cladding at the bottom end of the car help it give that rugged off-road look to it.

The Jeep Cherokee is the longest, widest, and tallest car in this comparison and hence is also the heaviest one here. The Outlander Sport on the other hand is on the other end of the spectrum, being the most compact one, but offers the highest ground clearance of all. When comparing the curb weight, Cherokee is the heaviest of the lot. Major exterior highlights include-

  • Fully Automatic Projector Beam Halogen Daytime Running Headlamps w/Delay-Off
  • Front Fog Lamps and Perimeter/Approach Lights
  • LED Brakelights
  • Roof Rack Rails
  • Active Grille Shutters
  • Lip Spoiler
  • Power Heated Side Mirrors w/Turn Signal Indicator
  • 18-inch Polished Aluminum Wheels

Safety
8.8/10

There is nothing to fault in the safety section of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee as although it doesn’t really come out with flying colors in the crash tests, it doesn’t disappoint either.

The Cherokee scored an overall 4-star rating in the NHTSA crash test, whereas it did well in the tests conducted by the IIHS as well. Considering the fact that many buyers would venture out for some light off-roading in this crossover, there are sufficient levels of safety offered as standard in the 2015 Cherokee. Major safety features include-

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) And Roll Stability Control (RSC)
  • Driveline Traction Control
  • Tire Specific Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • ParkView Back-Up Camera
  • Dual Stage Driver And Passenger Front Airbags and Seat-Mounted Side Airbags
  • Driver And Passenger Knee Airbags and Rear Side-Impact Airbags
  • Curtain 1st And 2nd Row Airbags
  • Airbag Occupancy Sensor

Final Verdict

The off-road ability of a Jeep is legendary, and the Cherokee has inherited it well too, but what it also does well is providing a smooth and comfortable experience as a daily driver. It lacks a bit of frugality and cargo space but makes up for it in the off the tarmac prowess and a better towing capacity. In the end, this Jeep offering is a considerable pick in the segment.
