Overall Rating
There's only one trim for the 2016 BMW i8 with 2+2 seating configuration. The base trim starts with an MSRP of $143,400, while the packages cost extra.
The BMW i8 has been refined year after year, but for 2016, nothing much has changed except for the addition of optional laser headlights. This plug-in hybrid offers impressive design and performance. The i8's impressive performance, extraordinary beauty, the interior of excellent luxury and quality, all contribute to making it a one-of-a-kind hybrid sports car.
We would recommend the base BMW i8 plug-in hybrid trim as there's no other trim for this model. The single trim is equipped with a 1.5L DOHC Turbo 3-Cylinder/Electric motor engine, which puts out a combined 357 hp of maximum power and 420 lb-ft of maximum torque while being mated to a 6-Speed automatic transmission.

Powering the 2016 i8 is a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. There's a 7.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The gasoline engine drives the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission, whereas the electric motor sends power to the front wheels through a two-speed automatic transmission.
Together, the powertrain generates a combined 357 hp and 420 pound-feet of peak torque. The i8 has an AWD drivetrain as standard ensuring great stability and grip. The 2016 BMW i8 takes 4.2 seconds to reach 60mph and 12.6 seconds to cross the quarter-mile mark.

The Mercedes is the most powerful of the bunch with 503 hp of power output, followed by the Porsche with 475 hp and the i8 at third place with a significantly lower 357 horsepower. When it comes to torque, the Mercedes still has the most which is 479 lb-ft, whereas the BMW’s hybrid powertrain has a lot of it outputting 420 lb-ft, followed by the Porsche with 324 lb-ft. The BMW i8's 1.5-liter powertrain takes it to 60 MPH in 4.2 seconds, while the Mercedes does 0-60 MPH in 3.6 seconds and Porsche does the same in 3.3 seconds. The gas-powered rivals in the same segment are significantly more powerful and faster than the i8 while having a lower price tag.
One of the biggest advantages owners enjoy with hybrid vehicles is the fuel economy. The BMW i8 delivers very impressive fuel economy. The EPA estimates for 2016 i8 include 15 miles for all-electric range and a combined fuel economy of 28 mpg. The total driving range is estimated at 310 miles.

The Porsche GT3 offers fuel efficiency of 15 mpg in the city, 20 mpg on the highway, and a combined efficiency of 17 mpg. Meanwhile, the Merc delivers increased fuel efficiency of 16 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg combined. Being a hybrid, the i8 smokes all of the competition in regards to efficiency figures. When it comes to fuel capacity, the AMG GT S has the biggest tank of 19.8 gallons, followed by the Porsche with 16.9-gallon capacity, and then comes the i8 with an 11.1-gallon tank.
The i8 has a highly advanced and sculpted interior. It is really comfortable for two people. The i8 does come with a rear seat, but it turns out to be of no use for passengers and can be used for cargo as the cargo area offered is not very much. The blue accent work is delightful with LED lighting around the cabin.
As mentioned earlier, you won’t find much cargo space in the rear as space has been compromised with the design styling. There's negligible room for small luggage. The materials are of superb level quality, and everything on the inside is extremely luxurious.

It has a simple interior, and some might find it to be too simple and plain. The BMW i8 has interior space on par with the rivals. The BMW is the only car on the table which offers seating for four, while the other two competitors come as 2-seaters as standard. The AMG GT S has the most amount of cargo space which is 12.3 cu-ft, followed by the BMW’s meager 4.7 cu-ft, and then comes the Porsche with an even lower 4.4 cu-ft of cargo capacity. The Mercedes does offer a usable amount of space, while both others are just joking. Major interior features include-
The 8.8-inch touchscreen with the usual iDrive UI infotainment screen displays the surrounding view of the car. For audio, it comes with an 11-speaker, 360-watt Harman Kardon surround-sound system. It also comes fitted with front and rear park distance control.
The infotainment system is intuitive, but the specific menu screen makes it slow to respond at times. You'll witness more connectivity options, while the power points are limited to a single USB port and a 12-volt outlet. Some of the major infotainment features are as follows:
The 2016 BMW i8 is capable of drawing lots of attention with its distinguished design styling. The eye-catching scissor doors attract people anywhere and everywhere. Packages available with the i8 offer a unique package of design and advanced technology.
The coupe looks futuristic with the unique pair of narrow fin trials flowing through the back edges. The 20-inch wheels look elegant and elevate the already futuristic look of the side profile. The i8's face gets a twin-kidney grille with a blue accent highlight, while other parts of the front, rear, and door sills receive shiny piano black color.

The 2016 BMW i8 comes equipped with a lot of advanced safety features as standard, including 13.4-inch brake rotors in the front and 13.0-inch ones in the back, offering really impressive braking for stopping the car really fast. It only takes 108 ft. to stop the 2016 i8 from 60mph. The brakes offer good bite and are progressive and consistent. The 2016 BMW i8 has not been safety tested and rated by NHTSA or IIHS, so these scores are not available for analysis. However, the BMW as per its own brand’s standard is expected to be a very safe car. Few key safety features include-
The BMW i8 is a one-of-a-kind machine with its superb dual hybrid powertrain providing impressive fuel economy but at the same time generating great power and superb driving dynamics proving its true BMW nature. The i8 is a unique choice in the price range and resides in its own segment. The gas-powered sports cars of the same price range are capable of performing better, and that they do produce more power is also a fact. However, the i8 is a machine providing a unique experience and should be bought for the same.
