The BMW 740i is the standard model in the 7-series, starting at $81,500. The 750i costs an additional $13,100 and is more like a luxury variant of the 740i as it features some additional luxury options for the driver and passenger. The 750i xDrive variant adds an all-wheel-drive to the standard 750i.

The 740i is pretty luxurious on its own and is no less than its competitors. The higher variants of the 7-series offer additional luxury but no performance improvements, so you can go according to your preferences. Whether you go for the 740i or 750i go for the xDrive variant as it will work as a performance enhancement.

The 740i features a 3.0L straight 6-cylinder Turbocharged engine which produces 320 hp and 330 lb.-ft. of torque. It has an 8-speed automatic transmission with a rear-wheel drive layout.

This powerhouse offers impressive performance and returns an excellent fuel economy. The motor shows no lack of performance while pulling this hefty sedan and packs in enough punch to do triple digit highway speeds all day.

In terms of competition, the BMW has the least powerful engine. The S550 sedan leads the segment as it is equipped with a more powerful engine and has some insane torque output. The Jaguar XJ offers a decent power output but a slightly more torque output. The Audi A8 L pushes out more horsepower than the 7 Series but has the least torque output among the rivals.

Acceleration

The 740i dashes from 0 to 60 in mere 5.4 seconds with a quarter-mile time of 13.2 sec. Whether it's a sedan, coupe or SUV, BMW never disappoints in performance. The 320 hp powerhouse with a rear-wheel drivetrain turns out to be a perfect choice.

The 0-60 mph acceleration times for all the cars are pretty close. The Mercedes sure is a 0.1 sec faster than 740i, but the powerhouse it has and the performance it offers, doesn’t add up. As for the other cars they are no less either. The Mercedes S 550 might lead the segment but the 7-series is the real winner. Also, it is the least polluting vehicle of the lot.

Ride and Handling

BMW cars are also one of the best handling cars in the automotive industry. From the steering to the suspension everything changes as you switch between the 3-drive modes (sports, comfort, comfort+). The power steering makes driving easier while the air suspension takes care of unwanted road imperfections. Even after being hefty, the car steers smoothly at corners and is exceptionally stable.

The automatic transmission handles the shifts really well and the active chassis works like a charm on the sedan. BMW's home developed system called Active Comfort Drive which adjusts the suspension as per the road conditions and driving modes is quite unique in the segment and truly enhances the sedan’s comfort levels.

Braking

The BMW 740i is blessed with a really powerful braking system. It features a 17.7/14.5 front and rear 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes with composite rotors, an anti-lock braking system, dynamic stability control, brake drying mechanism, brake standby, and dynamic traction control. For a luxury sedan weighing 4195 lbs. these features do come in extremely handy in everyday driving conditions.

The 740i takes only 112 ft. to stop from 60-0 mph. The braking power of this sedan is extraordinary and those additional safety features also enhance the performance many fold. The Jaguar XJ is the only sedan here lighter than the Beemer, although that doesn't help its braking performance.

For a 320 hp sedan that carries a lot of weight, the 740i is pretty fuel-efficient. It offers an average mileage of 21/29 mpg in city/highway with a combined mileage of 24 mpg.

The 740i also has the best in class fuel efficiency followed by the Audi A8 L and the Jaguar XJ. The Mercedes S 550 might be the least efficient but considering the power, its fuel efficiency is pretty good.

The 7-series has very spacious and luxurious interiors. Its interiors are well wrapped with high-quality leather. BMW also offers several packages and trims for interiors luxuries and class. It has a 3-spoke leather-wrapped multi functioning steering wheel with cruise control, phone controls, and shift pedals. It has power-adjustable and heated front seats with multi-level heating for the driver seat.

When it comes to functioning, every single control is in one hand reach of the driver. The driver-side door features a control for the trunk, memory setting, windows, and sunshades. It also features a voice command for easier access, shift pedal is there for easier sifting.

It's quite a fight between these cars in terms of interior space, but there isn't much difference between the three. The Merc and the Audi offer the best rear space, which probably is the most important criteria in this segment. The Jaguar XJ falls short in the rear seat space in front of the competition.

The BMW 740i has the best in class cargo volume. It features 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space. For a luxury sedan that's a massive cargo volume thanks to its long wheelbase that allowed the brand to pack in a generous amount of boot capacity.

The Audi A8L offers the least cargo space, quite disappointing for a car with such a high price tag. The Jag and Merc fare better but falls behind the BMW.

The BMW 740i has a low-profile aerodynamic body. It looks aggressive and has a muscular appeal all around. The LED headlamps and tail light, the iconic W-kidney grille, and the M-series body design complement its mean appearance. This luxury sedan is 206.6 inches long, 74.8 inches wide, and has a body height of 58.2.

BMW 7-series vs Audi A8

The Audi A8 L features a 333hp engine with 8-speed automatic transmission producing 325lb.-ft. of torque. The A8 offers almost the same dimension as the 7-series and offers the same performance, but way less cargo volume, fuel efficiency, braking performance than the BMW 740i. The A8 is a very luxurious sedan but when compared to the BMW 740i it still lacks some effort.

BMW 7-series vs Mercedes-Benz S550 Sedan

The S550 Sedan is priced at $96,595, it is the costliest car in this whole class. It features a 449hp powerhouse with a 9-speed automatic transmission which produces an immense torque of 516 lb.-ft.

but, its performance is disappointing for a car of such caliber. It is the heaviest and the least fuel-efficient car in the whole section. Compared to the Mercedes BMW excels in all aspects.

BMW 7-series vs Jaguar XJ

The Jaguar XJ is a looker and by far the prettiest car in this comparison. The beauty continues on the inside too, although space is a bit compromised. If you were to choose between form and function, Jaguar suits the latter while BMW the former.
