The demand of Luxury Crossovers has increased rapidly in the US in past few years. So, to meet the demands of the customers, BMW launched the BMW X1. The cars design is inspired from the BMW X3 but it stands a tad bit short than the latter. Or you can call the BMW X1 as the smaller sibling of the X3.

Other than the X1, go a little down and you might love to consider the seductive Mercedes-Benz GLA 250, the classy Audi Q3 Premium and a little more affordable and economical Infiniti QX30.
There is nothing to say for recommendation except for two things. First, go for the xDrive trim without a second thought because it will boost vehicle's versatility and also offer better traction. Second, if you want some add-ons, go for the M sport package as it adds sport wheels, sport seats, sport bumpers and what not, giving you the ultimate sporty feel in and out.

The BMW X1 has two trim specifications – sDrive and xDrive. The base sDrive28i costs $33,750 and features a front-wheel drivetrain. Another trim is the xDrive28i which gets all the features of the sDrive variant but with BMW’s all-wheel-drive system. But, the real excitement is actually hidden in the packages that BMW offers.

We recommend
For the people not looking for a towing vehicle, the sDrive has all you need at a good price.
Most shoppers will be happy with the X1's turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It delivers its power in a silky, linear fashion under most driving conditions and returns solid fuel economy relative to its power rating. - Edmunds
Engine and Transmission
There’s one thing great with the BMW is that they don’t compromise with the power in their cars. X1 comes equipped with the same engine as its bigger sibling, the BMW X3. The sDrive28i gets an engine upgrade, unlike the older inline 6-cylinder engine it now features a 2.0L Turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 8-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drivetrain. This Turbocharged powerhouse produces 228 bhp and 258 lb.-ft of torque just enough to go wild or go to the wild.

The QX30 and the GLA 250 offer a 2-liter turbocharged engine and share the same power and torque of 208 hp and 258lb.-ft respectively. The Q3 is the most underpowered car in the segment as it makes only 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque.
Acceleration
The X1, with is 228 hp engine, races from 0-60 mph in a mere 6.6 sec with a quarter mile margin of 15.2 sec, quite powerful for a compact SUV. The reason behind X1’s quick acceleration is its smooth shifting 8-speed automatic transmission and of course its powerful engine.

Unfortunately, the BMW isn't the best performer in the class because the Infiniti shows some insane acceleration and leads the segment like a boss. The Merc features similar engine and produces the same amount of torque as QX30 and X1 but is way slower than them. As for the classy Audi, it is the slowest to reach the 60MPH mark.
Ride and Handling
Just like any other BMW car, the X1 impresses with its handling. It is precise, agile, responsive, its compact body increases mobility compared to other SUVs, its front-wheel drivetrain helps in smooth acceleration. The X1 cuts corners smoothly and precisely while the traction control got you covered in case you messed up a little.
The electric power steering, automatic shifting and cruise control takes care of drive comfort and the 4-wheel independent suspension makes sure of your comfort on any bump or uneven roads keeping the vehicle stable and vibration free. The car has three drive modes available, Sport, comfort and Eco-pro mode. In sports, the steering gets heavier and throttle gets more responsive, switch to comfort and things go the other way around. For better fuel efficiency, choose the Eco-pro mode.
Braking
With great accelerating power comes great stopping responsibility. Thus, the Beemer’s braking is handled by 12.9 inches disc brakes at the front and 12.5 inches at the rear. These big brakes are able to stop this Crossover from 60 MPH in just 112 feet, pretty good for a car carrying this much of weight. The brakes respond well and don’t feel touchy.

As for the competition, the Infiniti leads the segment with a 60-0 stopping distance of 106 feet which is followed by the Audi, thanks to their lightweight body. The Mercedes is the lightest car amongst the rivals and takes 120 feet to stop which is quite disappointing.
The BMW offers great fuel economy better than its previous model thanks to its all-new engine. The X1 offers an average mileage of 23/32 mpg in city/highway with a combined mileage of 26 mpg. It is not the most fuel efficient but for an SUV it is impressive.

The QX30 and GLA 250 have the same fuel economy of 24 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway and 27 mpg combined. Audi is the least efficient car here as it travels 20 miles in the city, 28 miles on the highway and a combined of 23 miles on a single gallon of fuel.
The current X1 has one of the most elegant cabins in the price range. The dash looks and feels expensive, combining BMW's classic analog gauges with modern technology and high-quality materials, but you'll need to pony up extra for the larger 8.8-inch display to enjoy the full effect. - Edmunds
Seating and Comfort
The 2017 X1 features a classy looking luxurious interior with high-quality upholstery, several luxury and comfort features and it also has a Luxury package to add in some extra luxury features. But the surprising thing is that in spite of being smaller its interior is pretty spacious. This 4-door SUV can accommodate 5 people easily and features 8-way power adjustable bucket front seats.
As for the rear seat, it has split folding rear seats with folding center armrest and ventilation ducts. The Beemer features a multi-function steering wheel, the driver-side door features several controls for windows, mirror, cargo while drive modes and other control are on the center console for easier access It also has several storage compartments other than the standard ones at the front and rear.

BMW has the best blend of front and rear space, followed by the Merc and Infiniti. Audi isn't too far behind though, although rear-seat passengers might feel cramped around the knees.
Infotainment System
The BMW X1 infotainment system doesn’t pack something revolutionary. A little touch-pad allows you to draw alphabet to directly enter a preset menu. It features a 6.5-inch HD in-dash display
The infotainment does not even feature Android Auto or Apple CarPlay which makes its infotainment system one of its big disadvantages.
Cargo volume
The cargo volume offered by the X1 is one of its greatest advantages. The X1 features 27.1 cubic foot of cargo volume which is massive for a compact SUV which can be upgraded to 58.7 cubic foot thanks to its split folding seats. It also has underfloor storage compartment and power release for folding rear seats.

The X1 has the best cargo space available when the rear seats are in use as well as when they are folded. Infiniti offers decent cargo space but lacks when the rear seats are down. Q3 and GLA have low storage capacity when the rear seats are in use but when the rear seats are not in use, the cargo space is pretty decent.
A smart use of under-floor compartments maximizes storage in the back, while the size of the door openings and seat placement make it easy to move in and out of the cabin. - Edmunds
Weight and Dimensions
The X1 is pretty much similar to its older version or the X2 or X3 in terms of looks except being smaller in size. It looks aggressive, the smooth edges and curves define its muscular body design while the kidney-style Grille and iconic LED lights compliment its aggressive looks. The car has a very stunning rear profile complimented by LED Taillights.
The X1 is 174.8-inch long and 71.7-inch wide with a body height of 63.5-inch. It has massive 6.9-inch ground clearance perfect for some adventure runs or some insane off-road trip and the 105.1-inch wheelbase keeps the vehicle stable. Despite its small body design, the Beemer is pretty spacious from inside.

BMW X1 vs Infiniti QX30
The Infiniti is what we call a true challenger. With a price tag of $29,950 the QX30 features a 208 hp engine, it is not only cheaper but also less powerful theoretically. But in reality, the car beats the better-endowed BMW in terms of performance. The Infiniti has better fuel economy, more powerful braking but it has less interior space and cargo space.
There is no denying to the fact that the Infiniti is better than BMW in some aspect and its price give it a huge advantage but the Beemer is more luxurious, spacious, versatile and has a lot to show off.
BMW X1 vs Audi Q3 Premium
The Q3 is a very elegant looking sub-compact SUV with loads of luxury features and comfort. It has a 200bhp engine with 6-speed automatic transmission and only costs $31,800. The Audi is one nice car in itself with true business focused styling at an affordable price. It falls a bit flat, especially in terms of performance.
The X1 is a sub-compact Luxury SUV. It is one of the most affordable cars BMW has made so far. The X1 is not made only to provide luxury, its powerful engine, and compact body design, as well as luxurious interiors and impressive fuel efficiency, make it a family-friendly SUV perfectly suited for daily urban use.
