The 2017 BMW X6 is available in three primary configurations: the rear-wheel-drive sDrive35i and the all-wheel-drive xDrive35i and xDrive50i. Unlike the BMW X5, the X6 doesn't have an optional third-row seat but although it has standard four doors and seating for five. Moving up to the xDrive50i would bring you a V8 engine, a rearview camera, keyless ignition and entry with a hands-free hatch opening, four-zone automatic climate control, 20-way multi-contour front seats with adjustments for the shoulder and thigh bolsters, an upgraded 16-speaker Harman Kardon among others. There are also many optional packages available with the X6 such as Driver Assistance Plus, Cold Weather Package, Lighting Package, Dynamic Handling Package, and the Executive package.

We would recommend the xDrive35i trim of the X6. It has adequate performance and a plethora of standard features to satiate your needs. If you crave more power, the xDrive50i with the twin-turbo V8 will suffice your needs.

The 2017 BMW X6 is available in three engine choices. Both the sDrive35i and xDrive35i get a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder that produces a healthy 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. The sDrive35i has standard rear-wheel drive whereas all-wheel drive (with hill descent control) is standard for the xDrive35i. Both the sDrive35i and xDrive35i use an eight-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle-shifters. The other engine option is a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine which comes fitted to the xDrive50i and has a beefy 445 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. There is also a third powertrain on offer for the power-hungry folks out there and it delivers an overwhelming 567 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque output.

This trim also uses the eight-speed automatic transmission and has standard all-wheel drive. Just like other BMW models, the eight-speed automatic complements the driving experience. The shifts are super smooth and swift when left to themselves, and the transmission works its best in manual mode. Even the ZF-sourced automatic is among the best in class which makes it one of the best choices for the luxury SUV segment.

The Land Rover Discovery SE is the most powerful option here with its supercharged V6 motor closely followed by the Audi Q7. The Infiniti QX70 takes the third position with its horsepower rating but has the least torque output among the rivals here. The BMW X6 is the least powerful option with its I-6 motor but has a strong torque as compared to the rivals here.

2017 BMW X6 Acceleration

The 2017 BMW X6 sprints from zero to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds, which is a quick time for the segment. The authoritative 300-horsepower six-cylinder engine of the 35i and the slick 8-speed automatic transmission ensure the best acceleration and power delivery in every situation. For a tall SUV weighing 4704 pounds, the numbers are quite impressive which adds an element of the fun-to-drive vehicle which is quite gratifying. 

The Audi Q7 is the quickest one on the lot with a 0-60mph time of 5.7 seconds closely followed by the BMW X6. The Infiniti QX70 takes the third position with its decent overall acceleration times, making the supercharged Land Rover Discovery SE take the backseat in terms of overall acceleration times and performance.

2017 BMW X6 Ride and Handling

The 2017 BMW X6 rides like a true-blue premium SUV with a plush ride quality courtesy of the adaptive dampers. There is not much difference between the Comfort mode or the Standard mode, since the overall handling and ride quality remains majorly unaltered. Slotting into the Sport mode stiffens the dampers and improves the handling of the SUV at the cost of the cushion-like ride quality. However, it is still a fact that the X6 is a hefty SUV and is prone to offering a considerable amount of body rolls while going around the corners at high speeds.

2017 BMW X6 Braking

Like its performance, the braking aspect of the 2017 X6 is quite strong as well. The brakes are of decent size and the feedback from the brake pedals are anything but dull. Considering the heft of the SUV, the braking system does an excellent job by halting the vehicle from 60mph within 105 ft. This performance comes in handy especially at the highways when one needs to decelerate from triple-digit speeds rather quickly.

The Land Rover Discovery has the most shocking performance in the braking department and is trailed by the Audi Q7. The Infiniti QX70 has an impressive braking performance considering its size and weight but none of the competitors measures up to the X6 in this area.

For the base RWD trim of the BMW X6, EPA fuel economy estimates are 18 and 25 mpg for city and highway. The fuel economy figures of the SUV are decent and at par with the segment standards.

Among its competitors, the Land Rover Discovery SE sits at the bottom of the fuel efficiency stats as it provides the least mileage in comparison to its competitions. On the other hand, the Audi Q7 provides the best mileage figures among the rivals on the list. The Infiniti QX70 sits in the middle place with decent but not so impressive fuel economy figures among the rivals on the list.

The interiors of the 2017 BMW X6 SUV look the part of how the brand wanted it to be. The interiors are luxurious and plush and are made from the finest materials you could get at this price point. With the available 20-way, multi-contour seats, the 2017 BMW X6 assures both comfort and the supportive nature of its seats, making them ideal for dynamic driving conditions. The dashboard design is elegant and looks quite busy with all the buttons and controls placed on the center console alongside the shifter stick. The interior panels are covered with leather and soft-touch materials to give a pure sense of luxury within the cabin.

The sloping roofline, however, reduces headroom which is distinctly less accommodating and can be uncomfortable for tall passengers sitting in the rear. Even the center portion of the backseat doesn't help much as it is more of an uncomfortable hump between the two deeply contoured outboard seating positions. Neither the rear seat recline nor is the ingress and egress easy as the rear doors don't open particularly wide and a lower roofline requires occupants to duck their heads on the way in and out.

From the table, it is clear that the BMW X6 is the least spacious model in this segment. Its rivals offer much more spacious interiors. The Land Rover Discovery wins this segment for being the most spacious model. The Infiniti QX70 comes a close second while the Audi Q7 has the most elegant and elaborate cabin with a three-row seating configuration but its last row seats are practically usable only for kids and luggage items.

The exterior of the 217 BMW X6 is a much talked about aspect of the vehicle as its appearance doesn't suit every palate. People may find it too big and imposing to pull off the coupe roofline but its sister X5 clearly gets away with it. However, the second generation is nicer to behold than the original version which debuted in 2008. The 2017 BMW X6 tries to make the SUV look more fluid giving it a sleeker appearance than the SUV. 

Its side gills look over the top as they appear to be on the garish side according to some. However, as expected from the X6, it carries its weight SUV-high which significantly affects its handling in quick maneuvers. Only by switching to the Sport mode, you can feel its improvement but the impression still persists.

Audi Q7 3.0 TFSI Premium vs BMW X6

One of the USP of the Audi Q7 is its supremely quiet cabin and superior cabin comfort. It has plenty of safety features and also scores excellent in IIHS safety tests. With a multitude of driving aids, the Audi Q7 also boasts of a powerful supercharged V6 engine which is extremely efficient. But the SUV, just like some of its peers, suffers from limited cargo space which considerably drops its score on utility factor.
