The aged Aston Martin Vanquish S has been given a rebreather for 2018. The aging car still employs the powerful naturally aspirated V-12 that has featured in Aston Martin’s arsenal for well over two decades. Everything inside the car and under the hood scream of age and rebirth for the model seems on the horizon. The Aston Martin DB11 adopts a similar but much-updated chassis, and a turbocharged variant of V-12 offered at a much lower price tag of just around $214,820.

The Vanquish for its age is still quite nimble and pleasurable to drive, given the retro feel of the car. The coupe is still surprisingly spritely around corners and has a great response from the NA engine as you press the throttle. The 2018 Aston Martin Vanquish S comes in at $297,775, which far exceeds the Bentley Continental GT and the McLaren 570S it stands up against.

For its age, the engine is masterfully crafted. Powering the Vanquish is a naturally aspirated V-12 5.9L engine. The noisy snarl of the engine, which grows to deafening levels at higher RPMs is the most attractive part of the coupe. The suspension also has been re-tuned, which is now 10% stiffer, which does wonders to get the wheels touching the road. Although the noise levels would be for the onlookers or nosy neighbors to complain about, as the cabin comes with some of the best sound isolation.

The engine sounds attractive at any RPM you use it in. The 2018 Aston Martin Vanquish still has brilliant response and speed sent down to the rear wheels. The engine makes 580 horsepower and 465 foot-pounds of torque, which help it reach 60 MPH in just 3.5 seconds. The standard 8-speed ZF transmission does a fantastic job on the Vanquish S, which has been tuned to a redline of just over 7,000 RPM.

The Bentley Continental GT has a turbocharged V-12, and while the engineers at Bentley have their heads around how to get the 8-speed gearbox to eliminate turbo-lag, the Continental would be quicker than the Vanquish in almost every test, if not for its magnanimous weight. The McLaren 570S seems most attuned to the performance and track character of the competitors. The smaller motor, which has a lower output, coupled with the lighter chassis make the McLaren much better in both response and handling.

While the MPG figures are sure to be minimal considering the car still employs a fuel-guzzling naturally aspirated V-12, Aston Martin has tuned the Vanquish with a grand-tourer in mind. And that is what the car does best. The 20.5-gallon fuel tank can get you stylishly and rather noisily to any far off location you wish to visit. The range should just touch the 300-mile mark, considering you drive it sparingly and on highways. Although in cities, we would expect single-digit efficiency figures from the ginormous motor.

Turbochargers are meant to get blistering output and much meager fuel consumption, that is what we see from the McLaren GT and the Bentley Continental GT. Even the V-12 motor, when turbocharged, gets double-digit figures in mileage. While the Bentley can easily cross the 300-mile mark in range speaks volumes for its frugality. McLaren is the most efficient engine on the lineup, though the fuel volume is not available currently, and as such, we can only speculate for the range.

Aston Martin adds hand-finished luxury and comfort in boatloads to the cabin. Almost every surface is beautifully burnished to its pristine max. The aged VH architecture means that the Vanquish has some features and tech inside that has become mundane in the market as a whole. The interior has its charm, and the buttons and frills all over the cabin speak of its luxury. The finesse and materials try hard to cover the fact that the interior largely is outdated and showing its age.

upholstery now has “Filograph” quilted seats in leather. The seating posture is comfortable and reminiscent of cheaper race-cars in their bolstering and support. The cabin would be right at place in a luxury yacht. The upholstery has contrast double stitching and a carbon-fiber dashboard fascia. Optionally you can get the exclusive Rokona upholstery, perforated seats, colored seat belts, and other features. The car is also offered with a leather steering wheel, carbon fiber or veneer accents on the doors, and also an auto-dim mirror. Packages for colored accents or added bronze jewelry and appointments can also be purchased.

The Aston Martin offers great space and luxury, though interiors on the Continental GT seem to be a touch more modern, owing to its inspiration from the Porsches and Audis it is related to. The McLaren has the opposite, a futuristic and technologically savvy interior, which has an aggressive albeit stylish character. Everything from the interior remains the same as the older Vanquish, which retired in 2016. The setup runs AMi 3 system, which has a 6.5-inch LCD screen, which must be accessed by the rotary knob at the base of the console. The Vanquish adopts styling cues from the 2nd generation Vanquish launched in 2012. The styling designed by Zagato has a sleek and aerodynamic form. The Vanquish S revives this styling, though adding a bit more in terms of aerodynamics, particularly on the front bumper and the rear. The Aerodynamic Package features a front splitter and rear diffuser made from exposed carbon fiber. These upgrades increase downforce on the front axle by rerouting drag almost entirely.

The rear has new quad exhaust outlets and “Vanquish S” pasted on the tail. The hood also features carbon-fiber louvers along with the classic ones behind the front wheels. The Forged five-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels add to the aggressive character and go with the carbon fiber styling on the exterior. The supercar for its aged dynamics is still extremely attractive and stands out even amongst its highly modern competition.

Weight management is a point where the Aston Martin still retains the top spot. Even with its luxurious and heavy interiors, the car amounts to just about 3,800 pounds, which does volumes for its handling and performance. 2018 Aston Martin Vanquish S Vs. Bentley Continental GT

The Bentley offers everything from exclusivity to interior refinement as well as throttle response in a much better and updated frame as compared to the 2018 Vanquish S. the infotainment and the interiors are much more modern, while the turbocharged V-12 the Bentley offers is much more refined and efficient. OVerall unless you are looking for some naturally aspirated V-12 grunt, and pure performance, the Bentley is a much better choice.

2018 Aston Martin Vanquish S Vs. McLaren 570S

The McLaren 570S is built for the track. Though it does not offer the same quality and luxury than either teh Vanquish or the Continental GT offer, it has its own refinement and character which can't quite be matched by any of those. The McLaren is also overall quicker and more fun to drive. Considering the price tag, it is most definitely the better choice.

Final Verdict


The 2018 Aston Martin Vanquish S is an aging model, still being offered in its last few years of life. The interiors are exceptionally plush and comforting, although they have a rather outdated design and feel. The exteriors have been redesigned to offer better character befitting the performance and are still unique and stand out on the road. The engine response has been heightened to the limits of what the 5.9L V-12 motor can do, which does give it great driving appeal and a much better response. The naturally aspirated engine with its linear feel and delectable sound is probably the only feature that still keeps the Vanquish relevant in the market. Overall we would recommend you to wait for the updated Vanquish, to be released in 2018-2019, which will use a similar platform to the DB11 and have a turbocharged uber-powerful variant of the V-12 rather than this aged land yacht.
