Overall Rating
The all-new BMW M240i features a 3.0L TwinPower Turbo Inline 6-Cylinder engine. With it, the ride is capable of generating 355 hp of power as well as 369 lb-ft of torque.
The BMW 2 Series has received a makeover by the Bavarian manufacturer and the M240i model is labeled as one of the best mid-size Coupes in the market as it got a new nomenclature and powerful engine options recently. It challenges some of the big players in the market, like the V8 Mustang. The BMW M240i successfully shadows the powerful performance with a subtle overall look. Its main selling point is the impressive power-to-weight ratio. With the latest iteration, the performance gets even better.
The all-new BMW M240i features a 3.0L TwinPower Turbo Inline 6-Cylinder engine and continues to be a coupe-only model. With it, the ride is capable of generating 355 hp of power as well as 369 lb.-ft. of torque which is plenty powerful and is complemented by an 8-speed automatic transmission. This drivetrain makes the M240i a natural performer and with the prices expected to rise along with the performance for the next year, this 2018 M240i should be an exciting offering for the enthusiasts.
BMW M240 is available in a single trim configuration. Only major option is to choose between rear-wheel-drive or the all-wheel-drive other than the additional options packages. The AWD comes with additional weight that impacts the handling but also adds capabilities to the performance oriented coupe. So, unless you plan to drive it in snow, stick to the RWD and enjoy driving the M240i to its full potential as it was intended to be used.

We recommend
The rear-wheel drive M240i is a much better deal rather than opting for a four-wheel drive system as not many would buy a M240i to drive it on sand or snow and many just love its capabilities of pulling out donuts at the track for which the rear-wheel drive suits you better. Also that's how the car gods intended to make use of this thorough-bred BMW.
For 2018, the BMW M240i is powered by a 3.0L TwinPower Turbo Inline-6 engine, which delivers 355 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque that is all sent to the rear wheels as standard which helps it provide the fun element which it is known for.
There is also an option for the xDrive all-wheel drive setup while the transmission responsibilities have been handled by a 8-speed automatic transmission as standard but purists can opt for the 6-speed manual gearbox at no additional cost.

Lexus IS 350 F Sport features the least engine power of 311 hp among the cars mentioned here while the CLA 45 has the highest power output. The torque offered by the Lexus is also the least among the competition, as the BMW tops the chart in that aspect. Like the BMW M240i, ATS Premium Performance and IS 350F Sport also features an 8-speed automatic transmission, while Mercedes-Benz AMG CLA 45 comes with a 7-speed automatic transmission and also has couple of cylinders less as it gets a handcrafted four-cylinder engine and hence is also the most expensive car here.
To justify the M-badge on the trunk of the car, BMW has tuned the M240i to achieve superior levels of performance and thereby makes this car a prime example of a sleeper car, one that looks like an ordinary car but goes way faster than majority of them. The 4.4 seconds timing of 0-60 mph while the quarter mile run completed in just 12.7 seconds are both a testamony of that. It can also achieve a top speed of electronically limited 155 mph which is more than enough for any average American buyer.

Lexus IS 350F Sport is the slowest here with the lowest top speed as well, sitting just below the Cadillac ATS Premium Performance which is only marginally quicker in straight line tests but has the best top speed amongst all. Mercedes-Benz AMG CLA 45 posts the best time, for both 0-60 mph and quarter mile runs, although the BMW is hard at its tail. The CLA 45 also has a phenomenol top speed while the BMW gets a decent 155 mph top speed.
Braking is an integral part of such high-performance cars and BMW makes no compromise in this aspect. The 13.4-inch front and 13.6-inch rear brake rotors does a splendid job of halting the over 3,500 lbs car in the matter of seconds. The 240i stops from 60 mph in just 105 ft which is a stellar perfromance in this segment. There is a reason that BMW is renowned for the driving dynamics and BMW does not intend to let this reputation be tarnished in any which way.

The BMW M240i has the largest overall brake rotors on all corners while the Mercedes makes use of a slightly larger front brakes on the CLA 45 than the BMW, but the rear gets a smaller set. Hence, the CLA 45 takes a few more feet than the BMW to halt from 60 mph. The Cadillac ATS with its smallest set of overall brakes is placed third in this comparison, while the Lexus does poorly and takes around 10 ft more than the BMW and is placed last in this test.
BMW M240i has offered one of the best handling experience in recent past and it continues to do so even today. There is no other compact coupe that provides the same remarkable combo of engagement and agility like that of the BMW. Crispy, muscular and direct are some of the qualities of the M240i’s handling. The steering is sharp and accurate, the grip is phenomenal with large 19-inch wheels, the stiffer suspension holds down the car well in corners at high speeds while the beefier brakes stop the car on a dime.
However, the M240i isn’t a flawless Coupe as it has its own quirks, some of which are expeceted from a car in this segement. It has a sensible steering wheel which also feels bulky, there is good control of the front wheel as well as a good balance of adjustability and stability. But the ride seems tad bit hard which is true for all surfaces but it isn't something that would make you really uncomfortable. In such scenarios, there is some body movement as well which is a surprise considering the lineage of BMW cars.
The world is full of compromises and we do have to make one when we consider the M240i. With such great power and performance one cannot expect the engine to be a fuel-sipping one. But things aren't that bad either as the EPA rates the M240i for 25 mpg of combined driving conditions. The 240i can do a maximum of 21 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, but expect these numbers to drop further by 1-2 mpg if you decide to opt for the Xdrive powertrain. Also, drive with a heavy foot and you would see the fuel gauge drop reasonably quickly.

MPG (City) | 21 | 20 | 20 | 23 |
MPG (Highway) | 32 | 30 | 28 | 30 |

The M240i does reasonably well in this department which is matched by the Lexus in the overall fuel economy but the IS 350 has lower highway and city fuel economy than the BMW, so the possibility of it being able to match the BMW in this aspect appears slim. The CLA 45 has the best fuel economy and one that seems really promising and that could make it a viable option as a daily driver as well. The Cadillac on other hand has the lowest fuel economy figures in this comparison.
At first glance, the interiors of the M240i might seem like a carryover from the previous model year, but look closely and you will notice subtle changes. There are changes in the metal inlays on the dashboard while the matte-black trims are replaced by gloss black ones which can be swapped for Aluminium or wood accents with the options package.
The seats are large and there is suffcient amount of room inside the cabin for average American to enjoy the ride. Considering it's a two-door coupe, rear seats are obviously cramped for space, but they aren't that bad and adults can manage to travel for short distances without much fuss. Ideally the back seat is best used to carry luggage or kids on a long trip, that way everyone gets to be happy and the practicality is improved is the rear seats are used for luggage.Â

BMW does not classify the M240i as a 5-seater considering the lack of space, while all other cars here a classified as a 5-seater. There is amount of legroom at the front in the Lexus but then the back seat is more cramped than the others. The CLS 45 is the most cramped of all as it has least amount of legroo throughout the cabin while the Cadillac offers the best legroom both at the front and at the back. The M240i has the best headroom and should be a preferable choice for taller buyers.Â
Well, the cars of these segment were never inteded to be big cargo haulers and the BMW M240i does not try to be one either. The standard 13.8 cu-ft of cargo space in the trunk is decent for average daily grocery runs and can accomodate two average sized luggage comfortably. There is no option to fold down the rear seats for additional cargo space but one can make use of the rear seats when needed to haul more goods as the seats aren't that spacious for adults.Â

The BMW M240i have the maximum amount of cargo space in this comparison which is followed by the Mercedes AMG CLA 45. The Cadillac ATS and Lexus IS 350 both have similarly sized boots which are quite smaller than that of the other two Germans. But since nobody buys cars of this segment to carry lugage as such and the one on offer are decent for daily runs at the grocery store.Â
The powerful BMW infotainment system installed in the latest revamp of the BMW 240i is called the iDrive. It comes with a bright 6.5-inch display. In order to control the infotainment system, a rotary dial and menu shortcut buttons are available between the front seats. The infotainment system comes with Bluetooth support, DAB radio, and Sat-nav integration.
Moreover, there is an upgrade option available for the infotainment system. Upgrading to the BMW’s Professional system allows integration of bigger 8.8-inch display. Also, access to more online services and a slicker sat-nav are also included in the upgrade package. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are also available but requires spending a few extra bucks.
2018 BMW M240i Interior Feature
The M240i looks really appealing from all angles and also looks stylish with the signature BMW styling whic include beefy bumpers, strong character lines and striking set of lights at both the ends. The standard closed hexagonal LED headlights are replaced by closed circular LED units with a slanted DRL stripe across on the top that makes it look like the M240i is gazing at its opponent.
BMW has also enlargesd the side air intakes to make it look stronger and wider. The rear tail lamps are redeisgned too slightly and there is no other change for the 2018 model year.

The Cadillac ATS has the best ground clearance amongst the cars present here, which is only marginally better than the BMW. The Lexus too isn't far behind the BMW but the CLA 45 is about an inch lower than the M240i. The Lexus is the longest car here with best wheelbase that superior to others by a considerable amount of margin other than the Cadillac, which is only marginally shorter. The M240i is the shortest one in this comparison while the AMG CLA 45 has only a slightly larger wheelbase.
In order to ensure the safety and reliability of passengers, the 2018 BMW M240i comes with an impressive safety feature-list. In addition to having advanced airbags for the driver and the passengers, airbags for knee and thorax are also available. The coupe comes with an Anti-theft alarm system along with a tire-pressure monitoring system. Safety belt reminder for the driver as well as for the front passenger is there. It’s labeled “Good” for roof strength as well as head restraints & seats. The LATCH is marked “Good” while the front crash prevention measures are labeled “Advanced.” Other list of safety and driver assistance features are listed below.
A 3.6L turbocharged V6 engine that powers the Cadillac ATS Premium Performance Coupe has lots of power but falls short with the torque and the braking performance too is average. It is also a bit pricier than the BMW but also has more space on the inside. But space is not a factor that one would compare these two coupes, it is the performance. Thus, at roughly $3,000 lesser, the M240i is a much more rounded performer and would be the preferred choice for many.
Lexus IS 350F Sport is yet another excellent sports sedan in itself. With the prices starting tad bit below the M240i to gather some attention of the probable buyers, the Lexus fails to inspire any breath-taking performance as it would have liked to. It has the least amount of power, is the slowest in this comparison and the brakes lack bite too. The BMW on the other hand offers lot more power, performance and even features at practically the same cost and hence would be the winner of this comparison.
The AMG CLA 45 relies on a 2.0L inline-4 turbocharged engine that produces more power than the BMW's M-Powered engine and is also the fastest in our acceleration tests. The AMG CLA 45 is also roughly $5,000 more expensive than the already pricey M240i which makes you wonder the point of investing the additional money for a slightly better performance. The BMW has better interior space as well and therefore we personally feel the M240i is the right choice to go for That being said, if outright performance is your thing, then the CLA 45 will put the biggest smile on your face.
To some it up, the 2018 BMW M240i is a powerful, compact sports coupe which has an unmistakably high-class exteriors and decent interiors with space being on par with the segment. The coupe sacrifices passenger capacity for enhancing cargo volume which can be a boon in certain scenarios. Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 is a tougher competitor to the M240i which also has similar shortcomings. But what the Mercedes also lacks is the signature BMW driving dynamics that makes it a sheer driving machine that all BMW engineers and owners rave about. With the BMW pricing the M240i way more competitively to the competition, the M240i is a difficult car to overlook if you are on the lookout for a sports coupe.
