About 2020 Aston Martin DB11

3.6

Overall Rating

Apart from the more chiseled exteriors, the DB11 was also more rich on the inside with an even higher degree of opulence.Overall, the DB11 was every-bit an exotic tourer, but with a more versatile character. Thanks to its design, multiple powertrains and high degree of customization.

Unmistakable British elegance, contemporary styling and a grand touring DNA. No other trio describes the 2020 Aston Martin DB11 better. Launched in 2017 as a successor to the outgoing DB9, the DB11 had larger shoes to fill. However, with its refreshed inside and outside and a design, as seamless as the DB9, the DB11 rose to fame in no time.

What made enthusiasts go gaga over the DB11 was its smartness. The new grand -touring Aston retained all the ‘goodness’ of its predecessor while simultaneously addressing its downfalls. It had the similar exterior sheet of the DB9, but carved in a more sleeker and aggressive fashion.

As with most exotic cars, the DB11 remains a standalone trim with the V8 powertrain. The 2020 DB11 presents a beautiful amalgamation of iconic Aston Martin design, versatile driving character and exquisitivity.

2020 Aston Martin DB11 Review

Pros

  • Powerful and fun-to drive engines
  • Pure grand tourer styling
  • Highly customizable options available

Cons

  • Cramped rear seats
  • Not as feature-rich as its rivals

Apart from the more chiseled exteriors, the DB11 was also more rich on the inside with an even higher degree of opulence.Overall, the DB11 was every-bit an exotic tourer, but with a more versatile character. Thanks to its design, multiple powertrains and high degree of customization.

Overview

Unmistakable British elegance, contemporary styling and a grand touring DNA. No other trio describes the 2020 Aston Martin DB11 better. Pricing and Features
7.0/10

There is just one trim to pick with the V8 powertrain with a base MSRP of $201,820. The trim is aptly loaded with modern tech and advanced creature comforts that completely justify its price tag. However, if you wish for more exclusivity, and are willing to spill some extra dollars, you can try on the extensive customization options available.

We recommend

As with most exotic cars, the DB11 remains a standalone trim with the V8 powertrain. The 2020 DB11 presents a beautiful amalgamation of iconic Aston Martin design, versatile driving character and exquisitivity.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

At the heart of 2020 Aston Martin DB11 lies a Mercedes-AMG sourced 5.0 liter V8 engine that makes 503 ponies. The V8 DB11 is not only 200 lbs lighter than its W-12 powered version, but the smaller engine also allows a better center of gravity. Above all, the V8 mount also offers a better throttle response than its V-12 cousin.

The V8 power house might not be as witty and noisy as the W-12, but it is more enthrilling to drive for sure. Don't expect the excitement of a 911 turbo, but the Aston’s V8 has a broad personality that changes according to your driving needs.

Power delivery is absolutely spot on with a strong wave of torque in the background ready to propel the DB11 harder at a single command. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission that is very smooth in its operation.

Down the lower rev range, there is a small disruption in power delivery, as is the case with almost all turbo-powered engines. However once you are in the sweet spot of the rpm range and you have all the 513 lbs served up to you. The only issue faced with the transmission is that it's too keen on downshifts. However, that just seems momentary and once you stick on to a particular gear band, the transmission delights you again with its subtle business.

Acceleration

Not a full-blown track destroyer, the 2020 Aston Martin DB11 stays true to its grand-touring ambitions. However, it certainly has the extra grunt to surprise you every time you floor it down harder all the way to the red-line. With 0-60 coming up in just 3.8 seconds, the DB11 shows that it can chase supercars when needed.

All the three rivals of the 2020 DB11 boast more powerful engine than the Aston, that leaves the DB11 trailing behind the trio, on the acceleration chart. Talk about the ultimate sprinter among the lot, and the Porsche 911 Turbo S, claims that award with utmost modesty. Thanks to its shorter proportions, advanced aerodynamics and the blazing twin-turbo flat-6 engine.

Ride and Handling

Take the 2020 Aston Martin DB11 out for a spin on a winding country road and it instantly reminds you that it is a ‘grand-tourer’ and not a spirited sports car. The softly damped suspension and comfortable seating are more tuned for long-distance comfort, and offer a ride that is more plush than a Continental GT. However, the cabin does not offer the same tranquility as the Continental or a Portofino either.

The V8’s lighter body than the W-12 AMR, allows for a lighter nose that moves into corners with more eagerness and agility. Around corners though, the DB11 does invite some body roll, but that can be addressed by carefully shifting across the available drive modes, GT, S and S+. The driving mode changes the character of the DB11 and the S+ mode stiffens up the dampers for extra grip around corners.

Communication all the DB11’s power and mechanics to the road is the properly-weighed steering wheel. The steering feels more direct and precise than most of its rivals and its balanced tuning, allows the DB11, enter corners with sheer confidence. Overall, the 2020 DB11 strikes a perfect balance between a relaxed long distance cruiser with a sense of extra vigor that's sitting right underneath your feet.

Braking

The 2020 Aston Martin DB11 gains all its stopping confidence from 15.8 inch discs at the front and 14.2 inch ventilated discs at the rear. The brakes are also powered by ABS and Emergency Braking Assist.

While braking, the pedal has a strong geel into it and very responsibly bring the DB11 to a halt from 60 mph in just 105 feet. The only sad part though are the steel brakes which get excessively hot after some successive applications.

Among its class, the DB11 offers a decent fuel economy. The only competitor which delivers a better mpg output than the Aston, and that too by just 1 mpg, is the 911 Turbo S, with its 21 mpg combined. Thanks to the Porsche’s lighter and smaller body.

Interior
8.0/10

Hop inside the 2020 Aston Martin DB11 and you are immediately greeted by a serene British Boulevard. The interior layout with a very modern dash and center console looks much fresh and more appealing than previous Aston’s.

Most of the material that you would likely put your hand onm is covered in soft touch leather with contrast stitching. Yes, it's an Aston Martin and it does get several wood inserts along with carbon-fibers to make its interior look like a modern classic.

Front passengers should have no problem with space at the front seats which also get multiple electronic adjustment. The seats are comfortable and very well bolstered to hug you tight around sharp corners. There's also +2 seats at the rear which are too cramped for adults and better off for your kids or luggage bags.

Outward visibility is fairly good, however, the low slung seats make it difficult to spot smaller obstacles up-front. Some visibility is also hindered by the thick A pillars which create massive blind spots. Apart from this, the DB11’s interior is a fairly nice place to be. It's comfortable, opulent and exquisite, just how a luxury grand tourer should.

 Infotainment

Infotainment needs in the 2020 Aston Martin DB11 are taken care of by an 8.0 inch floating display on the dash. The system can be controlled either by a rotary dial on the center console or by the shortcut physical buttons clubbed with it.

The infotainment system is a bit dated compared to its rivals, since it's basically an older Mercedes infotainment. The user interface and and icons are pretty similar to those in the older Merc’s like C class. The system is not the best in the market, but it's okay in its operation and is certainly better than what Aston used to offer.

Cargo

The DB11’s stretched up proportions not only give it a sleeker and better profile than the DB9, but also open up more room on the inside. Not much in the cabin though, but the extra room is surely visible in the cargo compartment. Compared to the outgoing DB9’s 5.0 cu-ft of cargo space, the DB11 offers more practicality with its 9.5 cu-ft trunk.

The DB11’s trunk is surely not the best in its class, but in such a segment, looking for a generous cargo area would only lead to disappointment. Among its rivals, it's only the Bentley Continental Gt, that offers a slightly larger, 12.6 cu-ft trunk area.

Exterior
9.5/10

On the outside, the DB11 remains fairly identical to the outgoing DB9 with similar design cues. However, the exterior sheet is now more sleeker, aggressive and aerodynamic than its predecessor. Look up closer and you do notice the stretched up proportions and obviously the curvy roofline that effortlessly integrated with the rear hip. .

On the outside, the DB11 is a stunner to look at. A wider and lower front grille, flanked by full-LED headlights and bolder hood lines, give it an aggressive front face. On the side, it's all the charisma of the longer wheelbase wrapped in a super-sloped roofline, along with the massive ‘20’ inch rims that look gorgeous.

The muscular profile has been carried out to the rear as well. At the back, the bumped-up hip along with sleeker smoked tail lamps and large rear diffuser give it a stronger and meaner look. Overall, the DB11 is instantly recognizable as a grand tourer, but one with a with an aggressive and dynamic character.

All the machines in the competition look stunning for sure, and it's very hard to frame the “better looker” among the lot. However, a small demarcation can certainly be drawn upon the exterior styling of all the four. The Porsche 911 Turbo S is a typical track-biting appearance whereas the Continental seems much like a super-luxury grand tourer.

The Portofino does get close to the DB11 in terms of a balanced exterior sheet, but it's a Ferrari after all. The moment you look at the Portofino, you know that it can consume tracks with ease. No other grand tourer is as efficient as the Aston Martin DB11 in blending style, aggression and elegance together.

Safety
4.0/10

The 2020 Aston Martin might look exotic and drive as good as it looks, but one area in particular where it disappoints is its feature packaging. Crash ratings are not yet available for the 2020 DB11 but it does offer a decent safety suite to keep occupant safety under check. Getting the optional driver assistance package is highly recommended, since it unlocks blind-spot monitoring and auto parking. Some of the other key highlights of the 2020 Aston Martin DB11 are listed below.

Safety Features

  • 4-wheel ABS
  • Cornering lights
  • Stability control
  • Front and rear ventilated disc brakes

2020 Aston Martin DB11 vs Bentley Continental GT

Priced very much similar to the DB11, the Bentley Continental offers a completely different grand touring experience. It has super comfortable seats and an interior that is draped in finest materials. Though it might not have the agility and comfort of the Aston, the Bentley is quicker and faster than the DB11. Thanks to the Continental’s more powerful engine. Above all, the Continental is as good as the Aston in terms of fuel economy, and has the best-in class cargo area as well.

2020 Aston Martin DB11 vs Porsche 911 Turbo S

Unlike the other three members in this competition, the Porsche 911 Turbo S is more inclined towards track performance. The outrageous Porsche does lose out the comfort and practicality of the DB11, but compensates that with incredible handling and on-track performance. Not only is the 911 quickest among the lot, but is also blessed with the best set of brakes. The porsche is also the most fuel efficient in the competition and compared to the DB11, it offers a much modern interior with all the latest gizmos on board.

2020 Aston Martin DB11 vs Ferrari Portofino

The DB11 might have the perfectly balanced exterior profile of a tourer and sports car, but the Portofino blends both these elements in its character. The Portofino has a fresh and sports car oriented cabin that is packed with most of the modern bells and whistles. It might not be as comfortable and fuel efficient as the DB11, but the Ferrari does have some other surprises under its sleeves. The Portofino is a brilliantly handler with one of the most communicative steering. Where it delights the most is the ferocious powerer delivery from its refined and powerful V8. Finally, the way the Portofino switches its character from a track-hacker to a daily driver, when you want it to be, is simply outstanding.

Final Verdict

If you are looking for an exotic and comfortable grand tourer that also has the muscles to tame some winding laps, and most importantly you want something rare and extremely exquisite, the 2020 Aston Martin has to be your choice. However, if you narrow down your search for a better value, there are much more interesting cars in the segment around the same price range.
