About 2020 Aston Martin Vantage

3.6

Overall Rating

The 2020 Vantage very efficiently puts forth the core essence that the iconic British brand has been known for over the years. Its aggressive stance with timeless design cues along with a brutal track-oriented character reminds you of early racing Astons.

A gateway always reflects the eminence and might of its king and kingdom and is often carved by the finest architects. Not any ancient heritage site or a modern-day leading citizen’s palace, but the gateway in reference here, is the 2020 Aston Martin Vantage.

Yes, at $156,081, the Vantage is the most affordable Aston you can get, but don't be mistaken for perceiving it as an ‘entry-level’ product. Instead, the 2020 Vantage is a proud presentation that brings in the best of Aston Martin in a compact and explosive package.

As a standalone trim, the 2020 Aston Martin V8 coupe checks all the boxes that you expect from an Aston, especially at the price point. It's nicely packed with opulent and performance-oriented features to supplement its aspirations. If that's not enough, you do have the liberty of customizing it from a multitude of available options.

2020 Aston Martin Vantage Review

Pros

  • Powerful engine
  • Brisk acceleration
  • Generous cabin and cargo space
  • Eye-catching design
  • Good fuel-economy

Cons

  • Noisy ride
  • Lacklustre transmission
  • Steering wheel not as direct as its rivals

The 2020 Vantage very efficiently puts forth the core essence that the iconic British brand has been known for over the years. Its aggressive stance with timeless design cues along with a brutal track-oriented character reminds you of early racing Astons.

Overview

A gateway always reflects the eminence and might of its king and kingdom and is often carved by the finest architects. Not any ancient heritage site or a modern-day leading citizen’s palace, but the gateway in reference here, is the 2020 Aston Martin Vantage.

Yes, at $156,081, the Vantage is the most affordable Aston you can get, but don't be mistaken for perceiving it as an ‘entry-level’ product. Instead, the 2020 Vantage is a proud presentation that brings in the best of Aston Martin in a compact and explosive package.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The 2020 Aston Martin V8 Vantage is a standalone trim and you can get one of these firecrackers by shelling off $156,081. There's also an even ferocious AMR version available that is powered by a V-12, but it's the V8 Vantage that hits the sweet spot with its balanced character. It's an Aston Martin though, and you do get all the opulent features expected at this price point along with essential goodies to further its wilderness.

Engine and Performance
9.5/10

Powering the Vantage is an AMG sourced 4.0 Liter twin-turbo V8 that makes 503 hp and 505 lb-ft of torque. Thankfully though, even after its British schooling, the V8 unit doesn't lose out its brutish potent. The engine packs more than enough power with a huge wave of torque lumping behind all the time to violently push this street fighter at the smallest tap of a foot. The engine contains enough grunt, especially down the lower rpm range and loves being revved harder.

The engine would have been much more delightful, had it been mated to a smooth and efficient dual clutch transmission like Porsche’s or Mclaren’s. The 8-speed ZF automatic transmission is mounted at the rear axle for efficient weight distribution, but its shift operations are not as seamless as its rivals.

Acceleration

Rapid sprints are an ideal task for which the Vantage is tailored for. A lightweight and compact body powered by a mammoth V8 makes the 2020 Vantage race from 0-60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. The Matt Becker crafted Aston also gains effortless momentum from its advanced aerodynamics.

Not only on the track, but the 2020 bVantage’s outstanding composition also shines in its segment. Among its rivals it is the quickest to 60 miles, only marginally though. Thanks to its efficient power to weight distribution.

Ride and Handling

While on the move, the 2020 Vantage stands true to all your expectations from a modern day Aston Martin. First thing that you instantly notice while flocking it around is how agile and energetic it is. Its dimensions that are shorter than a Porsche 911 and a bonded aluminium body that is lighter than before, compels you to play with it all day long.

While spinning around the Vantage feels as nimble and compact as a small hatchback and is always under complete control of the driver. The lightweight nose sharply dives into bends and while doing so, the rear section stays tad firm as a rock, with no movement whatsoever.

The suspension setup is firmer than the DB11, but it doesn't translate into harshness inside the cabin at all. Instead the suspension is as nicely damped as a 911 GT3 and brilliantly eliminates body movements, aiding the Vantage with a very disciplined on-road behaviour.

Even with all its aliciousness, what the Vantage disappoints with, is the electric power steering rack. The steering wheel offers poor feedback and its excessive turning lock, makes the Vantage feel a bit agitated around corners. However, this is Aston’s only second attempt with electric power steering, and we do expect that Aston would rectify this over time in their upcoming models.

However, even with its track-oriented character, the 2020 Vantage is a surprisingly comfortable GT car. Also available are selectable drive modes, Sport, Sport+ and Track. The absence of comfort mode is further reminiscent of its angry intentions. However, cruise it along with a steady pace on an open highway and it feels as composed as any other GT car.

The Interior materials and the seats too are very smooth and comfortable whereas the suspension behaves unexpectedly well, further showcasing its dual character. However, the stiffer suspension does welcome vibrations inside the cabin, even on the slightest uneven encounters.

Braking

For the 2020 Vantage, Aston has made some necessary updates to the braking system, making it more efficient than before. The previous Vantage’s cast-iron rotors are now replaced with carbon-ceramic discs that not only are most precise but also shelve off 53 lbs from the Vantage’s overall weight. The new discs are also accompanied by revised master cylinder and brake booster that reduce brake-pedal travel.

The new discs in the 2020 Vantage are the largest among its rivals and they bite very very hard, bringing it to a stop from 60 mph in just 100 feet. Though the carbon-ceramics are too blunt for everyday use and are better suited for track driving.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

Not only the Vantage’s comfortable ride quality adds up to its GT character, but also its GT like impressive fuel economy. The Vantage promises 18 mpg in the city, 24 on the highway and 20 combined, which is overwhelming for a car this potent. Thanks to its lighter frame and shorter proportions.

Unsurprisingly, the Vantage is also the most thrifty machine among its rivals. It's not the most compact here among its class, but surely has the least number of horses in its bank, that makes it the most fuel-sipper.

Interior
6.5/10

As sharp the Vantage is on the outside, it is equally contrasting on the inside. Yes, at the first glance, some elements do remind you of a Mercedes-Benz, but the distinct charm of an Aston screams on the inside. Highlight of the interior is obviously the driver-oriented center console which is no less than a cockpit.

In typical Aston Martin opulent pattern, every area of the cabin that you are likely to touch is covered with leather and alcantara. Above all you get a full-black interior theme with red highlights along with silver and carbon-fiber inserts. You further have the liberty of customizing the interiors from the extensive list of available options.

Available only as a two-seater, the 2020 Vantage offers abundant comfort and space for both its occupants. Since the seats were designed to occupy a helmet wearing passenger, they offer ample headroom, in fact the best in-class, in-line with the Mercedes AMG GT.

The driving position is very comfortable and everything has been laid out within comfortable reach of the driver. The sports seats on offer get power adjustments and memory settings as standard and are very comfortable. You can get the seats covered with faux suede, leather or alcantara, based on your choice and taste.

Overall, the Vantage presents a very nicely balanced interior layout. It's sport-oriented, modern and offers a great degree pof opulence at the very same time. Talking about its competitors, all three of them, do offer rich interiors with a higher degree of sport character, especially the Mercedes- AMG GT. However, when it comes to overall interior arrangement, striking the perfect balance between spirit and comfort, the Vantage is far ahead than its rivals.

Infotainment

At the heart of the 2020 Aston Martin Vantage’s infotainment system lies an 8.0 inch floating display, on top of the dash. Touch input is missing though and it can be controlled via a rotary controller or buttons on the center console. The system has been straight away picked from older generation Merc’s and feels a bit dated though.

The 8.0 inch screen is not the sharpest though, but has clear graphics and a clutter-free interface and is certainly a lot better than what Aston used to offer. An Aston Martin audio system, bluetooth connectivity and an in-build navigation are also standard with the infotainment system. However, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still missing from the features list.

Cargo

You don't actually get a sports car like the Aston Martin Vantage with your weekend shopping carts in mind. That being said, the Vantage does offer a 10.0 cu-ft of cargo area that should be enough to hold your sporting kit.

The Vantage certainly offers a respectable cargo area for a car of its character. However, among its rivals, it's the Jaguar F-Type R, that's the most generous in terms of cargo, with its 14.4 cu-ft of trunk. Thanks to its comparatively shorter hood, that allows it to concentrate larger sections of its length on its body and cabin.

Interior Features

  • 8.0 inch LCD infotainment screen
  • A2DP Bluetooth audio and phone streaming
  • Integrated satellite navigation
  • 6 speaker Aston Martin audio
  • Power adjustable sports seats with memory

Exterior
9.5/10

Where Becker and his team have been the best with the Vantage, is its exterior sheet. First up is the front engined long hood that gives it a modern yet passionate appeal compared to the aggressive and muscular Audi R8 or even Mercedes-AMG GT. However, it's the large signature Aston Martin grille that seems shared from James Bond DB10 does the duty of adding aggression to its face.

Take a look at the 2020 Vantage from the side and it looks compact and sporty enough. To add a bit of muscle to its profile, the shoulder line beautifully integrates with the hood line and tail section with a slight protrusion at the rear hip and front wheel arc. Further accentuating its profile are the chunky ‘20’ inch alloy wheels, large air-vents and a sloping roofline that beautifully integrates with the rear deck-lid spoiler.

It's the Vantage’s rear profile though, that seems the most intimidating. The highlight obviously remains the deck-lid spoiler that not only improves aerodynamics but also smartly houses the horizontal tail lamp bar. The broader hip and the rear spoiler give it a wide and muscular appeal from behind which is further intensified by the large diffuser that houses the quad exhaust pipes.

The 2020 Aston Martin Vantage might also be a comfortable grand tourer, but on the outside, the Vantage dons an aggressive and sporty outfit. Not as aggressive as a Mercedes AMG GT or the Audi R8 though, but its noble aspirations are quite audible through its skin, and in a good way though.

Safety
4.0/10

A product as spirited as the 2020 Aston Vantage also needs to be aptly equipped with safety tools to keep a check on its emotions. Competition
7.0/10

2020 Aston Martin Vantage vs Audi R8 V10

One of the performance benchmarks in the segment, the Audi R8 has a higher sports pedigree than the Vantage. Unlike the Aston's mixed character, the R8 is a brutal track-dwelling machine. Yes, it does get a high-scale cabin, but is laid out in typical sports car fashion. The R8 weights similar to the Vantage and is even compact than the iconic Aston. The R8 is not only more rich on the feature list and as quick as the Vantage, but also offers a better track-driving experience. However, the Vantage possesses a more versatile character, offers better ride comfort and cargo space without compromising its fuel economy.

2020 Aston Martin Vantage vs Mercedes- AMG GT C

The Mercedes GT C is one car in the segment that carries a very similar intent to the Audi R8. The GT C features a powerful V8, premium interiors and a cock-pit like interior layout. Apart from its unique styling with a long bonnet, the Merc offers a smooth transmission and better handling than the Vantage. However, the Vantage topples the Merc with its overall ride comfort, nail-biting design, brisk performance, better cargo room and best in-class fuel economy.

2020 Aston Martin Vantage vs Jaguar F-Type R

In terms of character, the Jaguar F-Type R gets very close to the Aston Martin Vantage. Though it is not as spirited as the Vantage, but at a much lower price tag, the F-Type promises some solid driving sessions. The Jaguar looks stunning and is powered by a more potent V8 powerplant. Blessed with a smooth and refined transmission and a talkative steering, the F-Type feels more confident around corners than the Vantage. However, the Vantage is more rewarding in terms of design, interior fit and finish and power delivery. The Aston is also quicker, more practical and fuel efficient than the Jaguar.

Final Verdict

If you are out in the market looking for a sports car with a broader footstep, that can not only pump you through your weekend track events but also carry you to your office everyday with comfort, the 2020 Aston Martin Vantage is a perfect fit for you. However, if you narrow down your wishlist for a completely track-oriented machine, the Audi R8 and Mercedes-AMG GT offer more wind-tearing thrill than the Vantage.
