About 2021 BMW X7

4.0

Overall Rating

The 2021 BMW X7 comes with AWD and an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard, irrespective of the trim you pick, even in the Alpina B7. There's also a $4,350 M-Sport Package that brings sporty elements like 21" M-spec Bi-color orbit grey wheels, Black Exterior trims on the bumpers and side fenders.

The 2021 BMW X7 brings only minor trim revisions, introducing the all-new 612-hp Alpina B7 for the first time this year. The standard 2021 X7 lineup consists of just one trim - xDrive40i and comes at a starting MSRP of $74,900. There's also a $99,800 M50i trim in the lineup that brings a 4.4L V8 engine into the picture. The X7 still continues to offer a superb interior setup with a massive touchscreen infotainment setup and tons of active and passive driver-assist features as standard.

The xDrive50i trim has been dropped and the standard X7 offers only one engine option for 2021 - a 3.0L, TwinPower Turbo, Inline-6 motor making 335 HP of power. For better steering feedback and handling, BMW also offers the bigger 22-inch wheels as a $1300 option.

There's not a lot to think about here considering that the BMW X7 xDrive40i already comes standard with the Luxury Package bearing various standard features such as the Live Cockpit Navigation system, Sport Spec seats, and Satin 21-inch wheels.

2021 BMW X7 Review

Pros

  • Engaging handling characteristics
  • Spacious and tech-loaded cabin
  • Multiple engine options

Cons

  • Intrusive autonomous driving features
  • More expensive than rivals

The 2021 BMW X7 comes with AWD and an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard, irrespective of the trim you pick, even in the Alpina B7. There's also a $4,350 M-Sport Package that brings sporty elements like 21" M-spec Bi-color orbit grey wheels, Black Exterior trims on the bumpers and side fenders.

Overview

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

The 2021 BMW X7 sees a bump of $1000, starting at an MSRP of $74,900 and consists of just 1 trim - the xDrive40i that comes laden with a 3.0L engine and AWD as standard. The xDrive50i has been discontinued and the all-new $143k-2021 Alpina B7 is added to the lineup. The M50i trim is also available and is priced at an MSRP of $99,400.

There are 13 exterior color options offered with the 2021 BMW X7, three out of which are a $1,950 option, namely, Dravit Grey Metallic, Tanzanite Blue II Metallic, and Ametrin Metallic. On the 2021 X7's inside, the Multi-Contour Seats further add $750 along with increasing the comfort. If you check this option, you are also eligible to choose between 5 interior trims for an additional $1000. The Ivory White/Night Blue Interior Trim, however, costs $3,700.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

"The all-new X7 is either capable or ridiculously overqualified on the road." - Carbuzz.com

The 2021 BMW X7 is powered by a 3.0l, turbocharged, inline-6 engine making 335 horsepower at 331 lb-ft of torque - 1 lb-ft more than the 2020 model. This powerhouse is also assisted by a 48V mild-hybrid electric motor. The 8-speed torque converter automatic gearbox discharges duties in the X7 and drives all four wheels (AWD) as standard.

Thanks to the Launch Control System, the 5,397-lb 2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i manages a 0-60MPH sprint in an impressive 5.8 seconds, and further goes up to an electronically limited top speed of 130MPH. However, even the $57,200-2021 Audi Q7 55 TFSI achieves the 0-60 dash in the same time.

The BMW X7 sits on standard 21” wheels, the biggest in its segment. There’s also a $1,300 option to get the 22” inch wheels, along with M badged Sport Brakes. With the 22" wheels, the handling factor improves significantly but comprises the ride quality a bit.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

The 2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i offers a city/highway/combined MPG rating of 19/24/21. Technologies like Cylinder Deactivation and Brake energy regeneration (for the 48V hybrid motor) do help the cause, however, the 2021 X7's MPG numbers are certainly not conservative.

The 2021 X7 comes with a 21.5-gallon fuel tank enabling a combined range of 460 miles in the xDrive40i trim. Rivals like the Audi Q7 and Lexus LX570 offer much lower fuel economy than the Bavarian.

Interior
8.0/10

"There's plenty of space for the family, though in interior measurements, the X7 doesn't match up to some competitors." - Edmunds.com

Irrespective of the consumer base, the X7’s crown comfort lies in the second row. The optional captain seats with 37.6 inches of legroom, not only is spacious but also the most luxurious. It gets power adjustments, massage options with heated and cooling settings, and its automatic climate zone - the BMW ‘s four-zone climate control.

As far as the front row is concerned, the tech-ladden, wood, and chromed line, soft-touch, the dashboard have a very BMW-ish touch to it. The Advanced Vehicle and Key Memory remembers settings and can hold customization options for up to two people. Similar facilities extend to the third row too with comfort features like its own USB port for charging and Climate control.

Exterior
7.5/10

BMW awed the world with a very out-of-the-blue, big kidney grilled style. As much of a sight it was at first, the new design has aged quite well. It’s clever proportions not only amplify the exterior dimensions of the 2021 X7 but also gives its much required imposing stance.

The narrow striped LED headlights leave a lot of space under the front fenders to the X7’s height. On the side too, by deciding to go with strong shoulder lines as opposed to the Merc’s round lines, the BMW X7 looks much more exquisite than its German counterparts. The large wheel arch around those standard 21” wheels with those new Y-Spokes and optional M- package Double Spokes design makes this a nice looking car also.

All in all, the 2021 BMW is a pretty big car, rather a wider car in its segment. It also has a higher ground clearance and with a curb weight that is neither as heavy as the Lexus LX 570 nor as light as the Audi Q7, the BMW X7 ends up having mid-weight. BMW further provides tons of features on the outside to make it a safe ride too.

Safety
9.0/10

For a car that will end up with a six-figure price tag, the X7 is bound to feature some of the latest technologies. From rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors Adaptive headlights, and Drowsiness monitor, the X7 is one of the safest vehicles in the lot. There’s a Driving Assistance Package that features Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Detection alongside an abundance of features. The BMW has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute Highway Safety so as far as official ratings are concerned, nothing is out official yet.

Some of the noteworthy key features are:

  • Rollover sensor that triggers airbags
  • Front and rear Head Protection System
  • Park Distance Control, front, and rear
  • Daytime Pedestrian Protection
  • Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation
  • Rear Cross-Traffic AlertBMW Assist eCall

Competition
9.0/10

2021 BMW X7 Vs 2020 Mercedes GLS- 450

Mercedes Benz has been setting the standards for luxury inexpensive cars for quite some time, BMW has tried to match up to its standards and ends up giving us a different interpretation. While, both Germans heavily use Alcantara leather in its cabin by, key features like a trackpad and knob control, infotainment screens end up differentiating the Mercedes from the BMW.

While the Merc chooses to be more futuristic, BMW chooses the same too but without any limits. Small things like the Android and Apply display, the BMW showcases it on a full screen, the Merc on a reduced screen. The choice boils down to the exterior. If the new kidney grille appeals to your taste, then the Merc will not stand a chance.

2021 BMW X7 Vs Audi Q7

The Q7 was reigning in this segment for quite some time. However, it has bee quite some time that the Q7 has received an update. So as far as the relevance of design is concerned, the BMW X7 will appeal more than the Audi right now. However, Audi’s new Q8 does bring the competition close to the X7’s turf but since it isn’t a three-row SUV, it isn’t compatible.

2021 BMW X7 Vs Lexus LX 570

The Japanese Lexus has a bigger standard engine, taller than its competition but with a heavier curb weight and sluggish performance figures, it ends up looking quite bored in front of the X7.

That large grille sure does make the Lexus look good, but it fails that exude that executive aura that comes with a BMW. The X7 has a more imposing stance than the Lexus. Despite having an elaborate feature list, the interior quality just fails to live up to the German standards of the X7.

Final Verdict
7.4/10

The X7 with its wide range of engine choices and an abundance of standard comfort features makes this a very delightful package. The three rows are equally spacious and none of them misses out on any luxurious offerings. Both the inline-6 and V8 are a delight in daily driving scenarios and the subtle yet imposing design will make head turns too.

The BMW X7 wears the seven badge and that's adjourned to vehicles that have always uplifted BMW ‘s standard and innovation in automobile luxury. The 2021 BMW X7 lives up to that above statement and has yet again managed to deliver a standard that will eventually trickle down and set the benchmark for all BMW models in the future.
