Great car over all

Pros

The interior is great., The space is great.

Cons

The gas mileage, Heated Steering Wheel

I love the Remote Start and how much room you have, no one is right on top of each other. The Entertainment & Technology is top notch. The android auto and the apple play and also the hands free calling. The Bluetooth connection is great. It's loud and clear. The blind spot sensor is amazing and the help backing up is great. 2021 Jeep Cherokee Review

Pros

  • Punchy motors on offer
  • Supple ride quality
  • Impressive off-road capabilities
  • Excellent towing capacity

Cons

  • Cargo space in not the best for the segment
  • Not the most fun to drive SUV

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee has been launched for an MSRP of $25,296 for the base Latitude trim and goes all the way to $35,740 for the High Altitude trim. Coming with three engine options, namely 2.4L naturally aspirated inline-4 motor, 2L turbocharged motor, and a 3.2LV6 motor, the 2021 Cherokee offers decent performance and versatility of a proper SUV. This off-road capable compact SUV competes with the likes of Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, and Mazda CX-5.

Overview

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee has been launched for an MSRP of $25,296 for the base Latitude trim and goes all the way to the High Altitude trim, coming in at an MSRP of $35,740, for the ones equipped with the optional 4WD. Though the price doesn't see any major jump in comparison to the outgoing 2020 model, the 2021 Jeep Cherokee retains the same 2.4L naturally aspirated inline-4 motor producing 180 hp mated to the same 9-speed automatic transmission.

Coming in 8 different trims, including the newly added 80th anniversary, the 2021 Jeep Cherokee also gets two optional engine options, namely a 3.2L V6 motor and a 2L turbocharged inline-4 motor, both of which provides more grunt to this behemoth of an SUV. The 2021 Jeep Cherokee is part of the compact SUV segment which is rivaled by the likes of 2021 Honda CR-V, 2021 Mazda CX-5, and 2021 Subaru Forester.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee comes with 8 different trims starting at a base price of $25,296 and going all the way to $35,740.  These trims are Latitude, Latitude Plus, Altitude, Limited, Trailhawk, High Altitude, and special editions namely Latitude LUX and 80th Anniversary. The Jeep Cherokee can be chosen in any trim combined with front-wheel drive or 4-wheel-drive for all the trims. Two other powertrains are also being offered with some of the trims, namely a 3.6L Pentastar V6 and a 2L turbocharged inline-4 motor.

For the 2021 iteration, Jeep has managed to provide many additional interiors, exterior, and safety features with the Cherokee, making it one of the most feature-packed compact SUV on sale currently. Even the base trims like Limited and Limited Plus offers all the safety features like automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and more. Along with that, the Jeep Cherokee also comes with many optional packages like Elite Package for $495 and Interior Package by Mopar for $265, both of which add more luxury and features to the already impressive cabin of the Cherokee.

Buying Advice

Of all the trims on offer, the Trailhawk trim, which comes at an MSRP of $33,207, turned out to be the most value for money trim since it packs in the punchy V6 motor as standard along with all the interior, mechanical, and safety features like an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, heated seats and steering wheel, many standard driver-assistance features, off-road suspension, 17-inch wheels with All-Terrain Tires, etc, all of which makes it the compelling option for the segment.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

" As you'd expect from a Jeep, the Cherokee drives with heftiness and solidity, making it feel larger than its rivals."-Caranddriver.com

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee comes with a 2.4L Naturally Aspirated Inline-4 engine which provides 180-hp and 171 lb-ft of torque. A more thirsty and powerful 3.2-liter V6 engine is offered with the upper trims like Trailhawk and Latitude, which provides 271 hp and 239 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 4,500 pounds as compared to 4,000 pounds by the 2.4L engine configuration. There is a 2L turbocharged 4 cylinder motor too, which gives out 271 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful motor of the lot.

All three motors are mated to the same 9-speed torque converter automatic transmission, which gets the job done smoothly and decently fast. The Jeep Cherokee also comes with FWD as standard. however, you can opt for 4WD for an additional $1,500.

The decently torquey 2.4L naturally aspirated motor mated to the 9-speed automatic transmission gushes powers and launches the Jeep's compact SUV from standstill to 60 mph in 7.6 seconds, covering a quarter-mile patch in 16 seconds, while the 3.2L V6 reduces the 0-60 mph sprint to 6.7 seconds. The same motor tops the SUV to a 131 mph speed line too. Even then, the 2021 Honda CR-V turned out to be slightly faster due to its 0-60 MPH and a quarter-mile time of 7.5 seconds and 15.8 seconds.

We found the ride quality to be excellent both in the cities as well as on the freeways due to a slightly firm setup. The handling and driving dynamics were also better than most of the rivals, offering minimal body roll and understeer. The brakes were sharp and offered sure-footed performance, even under hard braking. However, the 2021 Cherokee came to a complete halt from 60 MPH in 128 feet, which is slightly worse in comparison to the Honda CR-V, which did it in just 115 feet.

Fuel Economy
6.5/10

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee offers a gas mileage of 22 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway, with a combined rating of 25 MPG. The fuel tank capacity of 15.8 gallons allows this compact SUV to get a city range of 395 miles and a highway range of 490 miles, allowing it to do 395 miles of combined driving in a tank full.

Though we don't have any official fuel efficiency figures of the more powerful 3.2L Pentastar V6 motor, going by the figures returned by the bigger brother, the 2021 Grand Cherokee, we expect the 2021 Cherokee to return close to 22 MPG combined. However, the turbocharged 2L motor turned out to be slightly more fuel-efficient than the naturally aspirated 2.4L motor, offering 1 MPG more in the city, coming to a total of 23 MPG in the city.

"With supportive seats and easy-to-use controls, the Cherokee's cabin is comfortable."-Caranddriver.com

Commodious, comforting, and deluxe are all words to describe the 2021 Jeep Cherokee’s cabin. The 2021 Cherokee’s cabin can squad up to 5 passengers easily, and comfort them in the cozy bucket seats, which can be wrapped with cloth, premium vinyl, genuine leather, and even premium Nappa leather as per the trim chosen by the buyers. The High Altitude and Trailhawk trims, which comes at a base price of $34,386 and $33,207, embraces heating and ventilation options for the seats along with a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, and a touchscreen UConnect infotainment system.

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee may soon be available with an additional row in the crossover, but until that, the crossover isn't the best cabin to stretch and yawn out the tiredness as compared to the Subaru Forester or the Honda CR-V, both of which offers the best in class headroom, legroom, and shoulder room. Even in the cargo capacity section, the Cherokee turned out to be the worst compared to the 2021 Honda CR-V ( 39.2 cu-ft), 2021 Mazda CX-5 (30.9 cu-ft), and 2021 Subaru Forester ( 31.1 cu-ft).

The infotainment list begins with a center 7-inch touchscreen Uconnect infotainment system, while the upper trims get a bigger 8.4-inch UConnect NAV system. Both interfaces are user friendly and support both Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity. The Navigation gets followed in the list, with voice control commands too. Along with that, the 2021 Jeep Cherokee also comes with a host of other features like multiple USB ports, Wi-Fi hotspot support, and many more too. The 6-speaker arrangement is standard for the base trim, while the big bucks can get a 9-speaker Premium Alpine Surround sound system.

Some of the interior and infotainment features on offer with the 2021 Jeep Cherokee are:

  • 4" MID Display
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • Uconnect 4 with 8.4" touchscreen display
  • 9-Speaker Alpine audio system
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

"While the Cherokee's bloated façade will get few Instagram likes, the rugged Trailhawk model is more visually and mechanically exciting"-Caranddriver.com

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee has always looked quite macho and rugged and the same continues with the 2021 iteration as well. This compact SUV retains all the features like the LED headlights with neatly integrated LED DRLs, 7-slot grille, 17-inch alloy wheels, lip spoiler, and many more. The top of the line High Altitude trim, which comes for an MSRP of $34,386 gets more impressive standard exterior features like 19-inch Granite Crystal Aluminum Wheels, body-colored fascia, Granite crystal badging, etc to make it stand out from the competitors.

Along with the impressive list of standard exterior kit offered with all the trims of 2021 Cherokee, even the lowest Latitude and Latitude Plus trims retailed for an MSRP of $26,535 and $28,605, gets optional exterior features like 19-inch Granite Crystal alloy wheels and ten different color palettes to choose from. However, many of these colors come for an additional $245, making it quite a bit expensive in comparison to the 2021 Honda CR-V and 2021 Subaru Forester.

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee stands out as a taller, aggressive-looking crossover and can cater to a wide range of audience from daily family hauler to off-roading enthusiasts. Though the SUV turned out to be the heaviest of the lot with a curb weight of 3,590 lbs, it is also the widest and longest too, making it quite imposing to look at in comparison to the typical crossovers like the 2021 Honda CR-V, 2021 Subaru Forester, and 2021 Mazda CX-5.

Some of the exterior features on offer with the 2021 Jeep Cherokee are:

  • 17" x 7.5" Aluminum wheels

Safety
9.5/10

With an impressive 5-star overall crash safety rating in the NHTSA crash test along with a good rating in almost all the subsections of the IIHS' crash test, the 2021 Jeep Cherokee turned out to be one of the best offerings from the compact SUV segment when it comes to crash safety on offer.

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee also comes with many driver-assistance and safety features as standard to protect the occupants from a crash like Active Lane Control, Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Blind-spot Monitoring, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert System, Airbags, ABS, Driveline Traction Control, and many more too.

Competition
6.0/10

2021 Jeep Cherokee vs 2021 Honda CR-V

The 2021 Honda CR-V could easily rank above the 2021 Jeep Cherokee since it offers more power, fuel efficiency, and acceleration from its more refined motor. While Jeep Cherokee can very well serve on rough patches, steep rugged climbs, and also carry family and their luggage, Honda CR-V remains a more comfortable and dependent full-time family hauler. The 2021 Honda CR-V is also slightly cheaper than the Cherokee, coming in at a base price of $25,050.

2021 Jeep Cherokee vs 2021 Mazda CX-5

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is a gorgeous crossover and is one of the best picks in the compact SUV segment. The precise handling and great driving dynamics are unmatched too. The 2021 Jeep Cherokee, however, can go off-road with ease, which the Mazda CX-5 is not quite good at. Nevertheless, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is slightly more powerful, offers more gas mileage, and also comes at a lower price tag of $25,190, undercutting the Cherokee by close to $700.

2021 Jeep Cherokee vs 2021 Subaru Forester

The 2021 Subaru Forester is one of the best-selling compact crossovers in the United States. In comparison to the Cherokee, the Forester manages to provide similar performance numbers coupled with much better gas mileage and cabin space, making it one of the most value for money offerings. Coming in at a base price of $24,495, it is also cheaper than the Cherokee by close to $1,000 too.

Final Verdict

The 2021 Jeep Cherokee turned out to be quite a compelling option in the compact SUV segment due to the multiple powertrain options, feature-rich cabin, and impeccable off-road ability. Though the Cherokee is not the most fuel-efficient and spacious SUV in the segment, it still offers impressive value in comparison to the rivals from Japan. Hence, if you are looking for a family hauler that can do hardcore off-road tracks on the weekends, the 2021 Jeep Cherokee must be a perfect choice for you.
