About 2022 BMW 5 Series

4.3

Overall Rating

The 2022 BMW 5 Series has been launched with prices starting at $54,200. It gets no changes in the interior layout or even driver assistance and other safety features. There aren't any significant changes to the powertrain with BMW retaining the 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder. The new BMW 5 Series will take on the likes of Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, and the Volvo S90.

BMW's best-selling midsize sedan, the 5 Series sedan has finally arrived in the US for the 2022 model year with prices starting from $54,200. The 2022 BMW 5 Series sees no major improvements or changes for this year, apart from the exclusion of a few options found last year and the addition of the most powerful 5 Series ever, in the form of the 2022 BMW M5 CS. Two engine options are on offer with the base engine (found on the 530i models) being a 2.0-liter four-pot motor good for 248 hp and 257 ft-lbs. of torque.

A more powerful inline-6 motor is also on offer in the 540i model which features a 48-volt hybrid system, that enables this bimmer to do 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds and return a combined gas mileage of 25 MPG. On the inside, the 2022 BMW 5 Series features a 12.3" infotainment system and also gets plenty of driver assistance features as standard. The lease prices for the 2022 5 Series stand at $658 for an initial down payment of $2,500 for a 36-month term. The 2022 BMW 5 Series rivals the likes of the Mercedes Benz E-Class, Audi A6, and the Volvo S90.

Our recommendation for the trim to choose will be the 540i trim as it is a good balance of features, price, and performance. The 540i comes with premium features like Dakota leather upholstery, 18-inch alloy wheels, voice-activated dual-zone automatic climate control air conditioning, 12.3" infotainment system, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, among many others.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

"If quiet luxury and handsome styling are high on your new-car priorities list, the BMW 5-series sedan could very well be the answer."- Caranddriver.com

The 2022 BMW 5 Series is available in two trims - 530i and 540i, the same as the 2021 model year, as there are no major changes in the trims. Prices for the base trim, the 530i with RWD, start from $54,200. There will a choice of the drivetrain which includes RWD as standard but one can opt for AWD or what BMW calls xDrive. Alongside these trims, a PHEV 530e model sedan is also on offer, for a base MSRP of $57,200 and an M550i trim is available for sale at a selling price of $76,800.

The 2022 BMW 5 Series has a similar set of optional packs as last year but gets some reduction in features. The Convenience Package no longer gets the Remote Engine Start, while the Premium Package misses out on Wireless Charging, Enhance USB, and Bluetooth. The Parking Assistance Package has also been given a miss for this year and so has been the Executive Package. WiFi Hotspot with a 3-month or 3GB trial has also been removed as an individual option.

Engine and Performance
8.3/10

Smooth, powerful, and efficient, both the four-cylinder in the 530i and the six-cylinder in the 540i motivate this big sedan with authority- Caranddriver.com

The 2022 BMW 5 Series carries forward with the same powertrain as last year. The base model of the 2022 5 Series, which is the 530i, gets last year's 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder, that pushes out 248 hp and 257 lb-ft of torque. The 540i, on the other hand, comes with a 3.0L TwinPower Turbo Inline-6 that produces 335 hp rpm and 331 lb-ft of torque.

Regardless of the engine choice, the 2022 5 Series gets its power transferred from the engine to its wheels via an 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission which can be manually controlled with the help of the paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel. As standard, the transmission will direct all the power to the RWD drivetrain. It will also come with the option of AWD, or the xDrive drivetrain.

With the standard 2.0L under the hood, the 5 Series can sprint from 0-60 mph in a mere 5.9 seconds, with the AWD system it does 0-60 in 5.8-seconds. The 540i on the other hand does the same task in 4.9 seconds, and that reduces to 4.6 seconds with AWD. The BMW 530i can do the standing quarter-mile in 13.8 seconds and will reach a top speed of 130 mph.

The 2022 5 series will continue to offer LED headlights with the L-shaped DRLs. Between the headlights is the famous kidney grille and below that the air intakes. The exterior of the car is completed with a set of 18-inch wheels with 19-inch and 20-inch wheels that will be available as optional extras. Safety
9.9/10

All BMW 5 Series models come with expected safety systems like dynamic stability control, dynamic traction control, and ABS brakes- Carbuzz.com

When it comes to safety, the German automakers have always been ahead with the new 5 series getting the latest technology from the brand. Unfortunately, the NHTSA has not tested the BMW 5-series, but the IIHS has and has scored an overall "good" safety rating. For the 2022 5 Series model, there are the possibilities to include previously optional safety features to be made as now standard features.

The 2022 BMW 5 Series will come equipped with standard Driver Assist features like Lane Departure Warning with steering correction, Frontal collision and pedestrian warning with braking function, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Rear Collision Preparation, Automatic High Beams, and Speed limit information all come as standard.

 2022 BMW 5 Series vs 2021 Mercedes Benz E-Class

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been one of the biggest rivals to the 5 Series for a long time now. The E-Class offers a spacious cabin, with more headroom and shoulder room on offer for the rear seat passengers. The interiors of the E-Class feel a bit more opulent as well. However, when it comes to performance, acceleration, ride quality, and overall driving experience, the 5 Series makes up for lost ground. And add to that, the better gas mileage and you will find the 5 Series to be a bit better of a daily driver than the Merc.

2022 BMW 5 Series vs 2021 Audi A6

The 2021 Audi A6, which is available for sale at a base MSRP of $55,000, is one of the more affordable options in the mid-size luxury sedan segment. But despite this, the A6 is more spacious, offers AWD as standard, and is decently fast enough. However, the 5 Series edges out the Audi in terms of the perception and brand value that the 5 Series commands and the overall driving dynamics on offer.

2022 BMW 5 Series vs 2021 Volvo S90

The Volvo S90 is another of the VFM offerings in the segment like the Audi. The S90 is spacious, comfortable, and offers a well-designed interior. However, this mid-size luxury sedan from Sweden cannot come close to the level of quality and refinement, especially in the interior that is on offer in the BMW 5 Series. The long-term reliability of the Volvo S90 is questionable, ever since it came under Chinese ownership. The Volvo S90 is also one of the fastest cars in terms of acceleration in the segment. Hence, if you are looking for exclusivity and performance, the Volvo S90 makes for a good choice. However, for everything else, the BMW 5 Series is still a better bet.

Final Verdict

With prices starting at just $54,200, the 2022 BMW 5 Series is one of the most aspirational midsize sedans in the segment. This is due to the vast array of features and classy design and good performance from both engines it has on offer. As the 2022 model is mostly a carryover model, bar the possibility that it could get previously optional safety features as standard, we would recommend buying a 2021 model after the release of the 2022 model to save yourself money with the help of the discount that would be offered at that time.
