While the announcement of the E-transit van, Ford certainly stole the headlines, the good old Transit is still alive and kicking. As it will be going into the 2022 model year, we don’t expect any major changes made to the cargo van.

As it will be going into the 2022 model year, we don’t expect any major changes made to the cargo van. It doesn’t need to. It will just do what it’s meant to – transfer stuff from one point to the other. The Transit is still one of the most popular cargo vans in the segment and probably the most sought after, in the USA. Even without any major changes, it continues to impress by doing its job brilliantly.
Well, it largely depends on the type of work that you will perform with your specific cargo van. There are a lot of ways and a huge number of ways in which you can configure your vehicle. So, it will differ from person to person based on their use case; whether you require a low roof, medium roof, or high roof. Also, whether you require a regular body or extended body completely depends on the use case. So, we would leave it up to you to decide.

The Transit Cargo Van comes in four trims – 150, 250, 350, and 350 HD. Each of these trims comes with either a 130” wheelbase or a 148” wheelbase; except the 350 HD trim, which comes with 148” wheelbase only. However, it also depends on the roof you are equipping. The low and medium roofs can be had with the 150 trim. The 250 comes with all three – low, medium, and high roof configurations. The 350 comes with Low, Medium, and High too; but the 350 HD comes with a High roof and extended roof only.
Features are mostly the same on all four trims, with little to no upgrades as you progress over the trims. Only the body styles and the payload capacities change. Also, you can either have the configurations in RWD or AWD. The packages that are available are mostly tailored to prepare your vehicle for the type of work that you want to put it through. There are packages such as parcel delivery package, heavy-duty trailer tow package, ambulance prep package, RV prep package, adventure prep package. So, you can prep your vehicle for the exact type of vehicle that you want it to be. Other than these, you can also add the interior upgrade package and exterior upgrade package.

Which trim should you buy?

There are two engines that are on offer with the 2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van. The first is a 3.5L V6 that is capable of producing 275 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. The other, more powerful option is a 3.5L twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 that is capable of producing 310 horses and 400 lb-ft of torque. Both the engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and can either be had with RWD or AWD. The gearbox is pretty capable. It is very smooth and offers a seamless shifting of gears at the right time. If you want to tow more, the obvious choice would be the EcoBoost V6. The other V6 is ideal for city driving, but the more powerful engine thrives on the highway.
Towing capacities are considerably behind the other vans. The towing capacities vary from 5,000 lbs to 6,900 lbs depending on the type of configuration you choose. The payload capacity is also ranging from 3,060 lbs to 5,110 lbs. This is where the Transit fails miserably to catch up with its rivals. The van can sprint from 0 to 60 MPH in around 7.5 seconds and it can reach the quarter-mile mark at 15.9 seconds. That is quite impressive, especially for a cargo van where performance isn't the priority. The EcoBoost V6 is even more capable and sprints to 60 MPH in just 6.8 seconds. Top speed is limited to 75 MPH.
The Transit is a vehicle that handles pretty well despite its weight and heft. Even though it is a cargo van, it is sufficiently quick and has electronically assisted steering. Hence, the steering is light and direct. Response and feedback is also pretty good. With the addition of AWD, there is more grip than ever and the Transit remains very composed even on tougher bends. The suspension setup is pretty decent and it will offer a soft ride for the most part. However, it is definitely not the best in class. The noise insulation is not the best, but the engine does not create too much noise either. The ride is enjoyable, especially since it is a cargo van.

All others except the Mercedes come with a stronger V6 engine under the hood. The GMC Savana is the most powerful one here while the Merc obviously is the weakest. Even though performance is not a factor in cargo vans, you can’t just ignore the Sprinter’s extremely sluggish behavior. The Transit is the quickest, followed by the Savana. The Sprinter is also quite a bit more expensive than the rest.
Official ratings for the turbocharged V6 are not available. However, real-world testing has found that the turbocharged engine would offer a relatively poor fuel economy of 14 to 17 MPG, depending on the driving style. The naturally aspirated V6 will offer around 15/19/16 MPG for the city/highway/combined driving respectively. The gas tank in the regular body is 25 gallons, but in the extended body, the gas tank size is increased to 31 gallons. Even though we don’t have the official figures, the range still stands out around 375/475/400 miles for the regular body and 496 miles combined for the extended body.

The entire information about the fuel economies is not known, but we still get to know that the Sprinter is the most fuel-efficient out of all the vehicles. The rest of teh competitors are in similar territory in the fuel economy department. The Savana has the largest gas tank and comes with the best overall range.
The interior of the 2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van is very basic, as one might expect. The design is ergonomic and it is just meant to be functional. It is pretty well designed and has good ergonomics and focuses on being driver-focused. There isn’t much in the interior to talk about, other than the hard plastics and the durable materials that have been used. They certainly do feel cheap, but this is not a luxury SUV. Manual air conditioning and vinyl seats come as standard. The van only seats two people. The driver’s seat is 4-way manually adjustable and the passenger’s seat is also 4-way adjustable.
The seats are covered in Dark Palazzo gray vinyl. There can be a seat for a third passenger added in the front row. Or you could remove the passenger’s seat altogether. 10-way power-adjustable seats are optional and so are cloth seats. The primary purpose of a cargo-carrying van is to carry, well, cargo. The Transit is a pretty good hauler. There is a host of different combinations of body styles and roof heights, based on which the cargo capacity will differ. The regular body with the low roof offers 246.7 cubic feet of space while the extended body with the high roof offers up to 487.3 cubic feet of space.

When it comes to spacing in the front row, the Sprinter and the NV have it in the bag. However, the Sprinter suffers from having the smallest legroom. However, the cargo capacity is dominated by the Sprinter, while the Transit comes in the second spot. The Nissan offers the least space for cargo compared to the rivals and
Key interior features include:
Cargo vans are not usually known for their cutting-edge tech features. The Transit comes with a small 4” LCD screen. However, optionally, you can upgrade to an 8” SYNC 3 infotainment system, which is actually quite awesome. The standard features include the very barebones, such as input jack, MP3 player, USB ports, Bluetooth, AM/FM radio, etc. Optionally, you can also add SiriusXM radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto with the SYNC 3 package. Also, navigation can be added. There's also a 4-speaker audio system.
Highlights of the infotainment system:
Cargo vans are not made to attract buyers with their awesome looks. But they don’t need to be too bland. It's tough to create an attractive-looking van, but the 2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van still appears to be somewhat decent. The primary focus here is on the body styles. You can either choose a 130” wheelbase or a 148” wheelbase. Also available are the options for the low roof, medium roof, and high roof.
The front halogen headlights are far from the grille, and the grille itself is not too big. There are also front fog lamps. At the side, you get a sliding door. However, at the rear, you get a split swing-out rear door. Either you can choose between 16” silver steel wheels or you can choose aluminum wheels. That is it, that’s all about the exterior of the American cargo van.

None of these vans are particulartly beautiful and they are all about practicality. All models are available in various body styles and roof lengths. The dimensions can vary based on the type of model chosen. However, the NV and the Sprinter have a significantly longer wheelbase than the other two, because they come with the “long” wheelbase as standard.
Key exterior features include:
The NV comes with the biggest brakes and the Savana has slightly larger brakes than the Ford. The NV is also quite a lot heavier than the other vans while the Sprinter is comfortably the lightest. The Transit comes equipped with 12.1-inch front rotors and 12.1-inch rear rotors. All the wheels are disc brakes and all the wheels have ABS. Braking is quite decent and it stops pretty well, despite its heft. Obviously, the more load you are carrying, the lesser the stability will be. Despite its base curb weight of 4985 lbs, the van comes to a halt quickly.
Since the Transit Cargo is a commercial vehicle, it is exempted from crash testing and safety ratings by NHTSA and IIHS. However, we do have the ratings of the passenger van. It gets a 4-star overall safety rating, with the front being the weakest link. Unfortunately, none of the Transits have been crash-tested by IIHS yet. The strongest part of the American cargo van is the fact that it comes loaded with Ford Co-Pulot360 and offers quite a few impressive safety and driver assistance features, as standard.
Key safety features:
The Nissan NV is meant for those who want pure muscle. It can pull up to 9,400 lbs and also has more payload capacity than the Transit. So, if don’t find the performance and the smaller cargo capacity of the NV and only want to tow, then it might be a good choice for you. However, the Transit handles better.
The Mercedes Sprinter is the primary competitor to the Transit and has it beat on almost every single front except a couple. Firstly, the Sprinter is extremely sluggish and secondly, it does not come with such good safety features as standard. However, the Merc handles well, is more comfortable, is more fuel-efficient, has a much larger capacity, and can also tow and carry heavier items. But it also costs more money.
The GMC Savana is a good blend of performance and practicality. Even though it can’t quite match the performance and the cargo capacity of the Transit, it does offer more towing capacity. However, the Savana cannot quite compete with the Transit when it comes to the list of standard safety features.
The Ford Transit is a pretty popular van that requires no introduction. Even though it's not perfect, it has its own strong points. For starters, it is the quickest cargo van and hence, can be adapted by everyone for every purpose. Granted, the 2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van is not the best of cargo carriers in its segment, but it offers a great suite of standard safety features. Despite its flaws, it's still an interesting proposition. Based on what you want to do with it, you should go ahead and get one that suits your purpose.
