Review

The midsize SUV is in its second-generation model at present, since 2017, and received a facelift back in 2021 as well.

Often considered a smaller version of the popular Audi Q7, the Q5 is based on the corresponding generation of the A4 sedan, based on the Volkswagen MLB EVO platform. The Q5 has been hustling in the market since 2008 and is still going strong in the crowded segment. However, the SUV could do with a few upgrades though such as a bigger cabin and a better transmission unit. The midsize SUV is in its second-generation model at present, since 2017, and received a facelift back in 2021 as well.

The SUV demands a base price of $44,695 and competes with rivals such as the BMW X3, the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, and the Volvo XC60.

Buying Advice

When factoring in the equipment level and the price of the car, we feel that the premium plus trim level makes a lot of sense. It gives you features like a power-adjustable steering column, Audi virtual cockpit digital gauge display, the full safety suite, and so on. Among the powertrains, we feel the 45 series powertrains make a lot of sense, with its 261 hp output, more of which will be explained soon in this article.

Features

The 2023 Audi Q5 will be offered in three well-equipped trim levels which are Premium, Premium Plus, and prestige. The base price for the Premium is set at $44,695, and the vehicle comes in a not-so-base form though. Some of the standard features include LED headlamps and tail lamps, automatic rain-sensing wipers, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a three-zone automatic climate control, and leather upholstery among several other features. The Premium Plus trim gets a delectable panoramic sunroof, simulated leather and faux suede treatment on the door panels and armrests, a fully digital driver’s instrument cluster, power-adjustable steering column along with hands-on detection, and a premium Bang & Olufsen audio system. The top-end Prestige trim is further equipped with Audi’s signature Matrix-design LED headlamps, a head-up display, heating for the rear seats, both heating and cooling for the front cup holders, and an acoustically shielded front windshield glass to reduce cabin noise.

The 2023 Audi Q5 is expected to hit the roads by early 2023.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The 2023 Audi Q5 gets no mechanical changes over the 2022 model hence, its EPA ratings remain similar as well. According to the EPA, the Q5 returns an average mpg of 23 when driven inside the cities and the number rises to 28 during highway drives. The combined mileage is rated at 25 mpg. The SUV gets a sizable gas tank of 18.5 gallons which allows it to cover over 400 miles within cities and over 500 miles out on the highways.

The BMW X3 is the best one here with the highest combined and city mileage ratings according to the EPA. Despite having a slightly smaller, 17.2-gallon gasoline storage, the X3 delivers about 430 miles of city driving miles along with 500 miles of highway driving miles as well. The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class offers the lowest city driving range among the rivals here but the rest of the numbers are comparable though. The Volvo XC60 offers the highest highway and combined driving range numbers courtesy of its decent mpg ratings and an 18.8-gallon gas tank.

Interior
8.0/10

The 2023 Audi Q5 has been spared from getting the latest screen-heavy dashboard layout you’d find on other vehicles from the brand. However, it is a good thing since not every one of us is a tech-savvy individual, and getting used to those digital controls requires plenty of time as well. The dashboard has a driver-focused layout with the instrument cluster and the controls aligned towards the driver’s seat. The cabin also gets several tasteful features as standard which are optional in a few immediate rivals of the vehicle. Some of the standard features include an 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat, a three-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heating for the front seats, and reclining rear seats. The Premium Plus trim will get you faux leather trim on the door panels and the center console and a fully digital instrument cluster for the driver. The top-end Prestige trim will get you a head-up display, acoustic front windshield, ambient cabin lighting, both heating and cooling for the front cup holders, and heating for the rear seats. The cargo capacity behind the rear seats is impressive at 25.8 cu-ft.

Much like the Q5, the BMW X3 also offers a driver-focused dashboard layout. The levels of fit and finish are similar to that of the Q5, and the X3 is as spacious as the Q5. The cargo capacity is slightly better on the X3 too, with 28.7 cu-ft of space behind the rear seats. The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class has a desirable cabin and looks both more luxurious and plusher than the cabins of the rivals here. While the GLC-Class is yet to receive the latest interior design from Benz, the current design is still pleasurable enough. However, the cargo capacity behind the rear seats is dismal as compared to the X3 and the Q5 here, at only 19.4 cu-ft of space on offer. Volvo has always kept things simple yet elegant on the inside, and the XC60’s cabin is a fine example of it. The cabin gets plenty of luxury touches and space but the small 17.8 cu-ft of cargo capacity disappoints.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 Audi Q5 include:

  • Three-zone automatic climate control
  • Eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat
  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats
  • 40/20/40-split rear seats that slide, recline, and fold
  • Simulated leather trim on the center console and door panels

How intuitive is the 2023 Audi Q5’s infotainment system?

Audi’s proprietary MMI infotainment system is one of the best in the business, and the 2023 Q5 gets the latest version of it. The SUV has a standard 10.1-inch touchscreen display mounted on top of the dashboard and is bright. The touch response is on point and the interface is fluid while using. The standard features include wireless support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, a 10-speaker audio system, a couple of USB ports, and an HD radio. Some of the available features include an integrated navigation system, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a wireless device charging pad, a satellite radio, and a 19-speaker audio system.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2023 Audi Q5 include:

  • 10.1-inch touchscreen display with Audi’s MMI interface
  • 10-speaker/19-speaker audio system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay
  • Wireless Android Auto
  • HD radio
  • Satellite radio
  • Navigation

Exterior
6.0/10

The Audi Q5 became more and more aggressive on the outside with each facelift, and the latest version of the SUV looks absolutely stunning. At the front, the big grille along with the LED headlamp units looks loud enough and the chrome surrounds on the air intake gills gives the necessary premium touch as well. The hood doesn’t have any muscular designs though and the fenders have a slim profile too. The rear end has a familiar design that is associated with both the Q5 and the bigger Q7. The standard 18-inch wheels might not suit the taste of some shoppers but the Premium Plus trim’s bigger 19-inch wheels look more appropriate. The vehicle rides with a decent ground clearance of 8.2 inches.

The BMW X3’s front grille has gotten bigger with time but we are thankful to the brand that it has still spared the SUV from getting the latest and awkward kidney grille. The X3 also gets some sporty and sharp designs on the front bumper but still looks quite understated in front of the Q5 though. Moreover, the X3 is marginally longer than the Q5, especially due to the latter’s shorter nose. The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class has a more ute exterior design than both the Q5 and the X3 but its low ground clearance makes it less practical than the rest. The Volvo XC60 has received some subtle design tweaks in recent years but it still looks fresh and elegant in front of its aggressive and sporty-looking German counterparts.

Some standout exterior features include

  • 18-inch wheels
  • LED headlights with automatic high-beam operation
  • LED taillights with dynamic turn signals
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Power liftgate
  • Panoramic sunroof

Safety
8.0/10

The 2023 Audi Q5 already bagged the highest-possible Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS along with a perfect 5-star rating from the NHTSA as well, retaining its impeccable safety standards. Furthermore, the SUV ships with a Frontal collision warning and mitigation system, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and parking sensors at both front and rear as standard. The Premium Plus trim additionally adds Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and a surround-view camera system to the list. The top-end Prestige trim tops it off with a traffic sign recognition system and an automated parking system.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Frontal collision mitigation
  • Blind-spot warning
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Traffic Jam Assist
  • Surround-view camera system
  • Automated parking assistance

2023 Audi Q5 vs 2022 BMW X3

The BMW X3 has been a constant rival of the Q5 since the beginning and both SUVs go head-to-head in terms of almost everything. The Beemer has a more simple cabin layout along with a slightly understated exterior design while the Q5 has a louder exterior design and a more flashy interior design. In terms of performance, the Q5 pulls ahead with its quicker 0-60mph sprint time and standard AWD layout. The X3 also has a bigger cargo capacity than the Q5 though.

2023 Audi Q5 vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class looks and feels more laidback than both the Q5 and the X3. Moreover, it has a plusher cabin as well. However, the GLC-Class lags behind the Q5 in terms of practicality due to its lower fuel economy figures, disappointing cargo capacity, and low ground clearance. Despite the shortcomings, the Benz carries a similar price tag to the Q5, making the latter a better option any day.

2023 Audi Q5 vs 2022 Volvo XC60

The Volvo XC60 is a decent competitor to the Q5, having a decent performance department to start with. The XC60 also has an impeccable safety aspect with more standard safety techs than the Q5. On the inside, the XC60 appeals to the shoppers looking for something simple and elegant over sharp and sporty as the Q5. On the outside too, the XC60 appears more understated than the Q5 as well. The disappointing part is the lackluster fuel economy and the smaller cargo capacity of the XC60 that makes the Q5 a better alternative as a whole.

Final Verdict

The Audi Q5 has been a super all-rounder in its class soon after its launch, and often overshadowed its bigger sibling, the Q7, in terms of practicality. With a striking exterior design, a spacious and feature-rich cabin, a cavernous cargo area, and plenty of standard safety techs, the Q5 offers the most value for your money than a majority of its rivals in the class. However, you can also look at the BMW X3 since it has a few better things to offer you at a similar price to the Q5. If you’re not into loud and bold designs, the Volvo XC60 would make an excellent alternative to the German rivals here, especially with its extensive amount of standard safety techs and impeccable crash scores.
