In today’s world of electric cars and performance cars with downsized engines, the Audi R8 sits among the dying breed of performance machines. After starting its journey in 2006, the iconic car has reached the end of its road since it is all set to be discontinued after the 2023 model year. The current version of the car has often been considered as a more affordable version of the Huracan due to the technical similarities between the two cars. Like its rivals, the R8 also gets a convertible model, the R8 Spyder, that offers even more thrill with endless open-top fun.

The 2023 R8 Spyder will see no changes and will carry a higher price tag of $173,795. Powering the car will be the same, glorious naturally aspirated V10 that also does its duty on the Huracan, but in a different state of tune. While the R8 Spyder offers plenty of fun for its price tag, it does miss out on several advanced driver assistance techs which are not offered through the optional packages either. The practicality part of the car is decent at the most with a posh cabin and a small cargo area. In its class, the R8 Spyder rivals the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet and the Lamborghini Huracan EVO Spyder.

Features
7.8/10

The 2023 Audi R8 will be offered in a single trim only with a base price of $173,795. For that price, the car offers several convenience and creature comfort features as standard. The features include big 20-inch wheels, auto-dimming and power-folding outside rearview mirrors, leather upholstery, automatic climate control, a wireless device charging pad, and automatic high beam control for the headlamp units. The rear-wheel drive model gets a few optional features which are Bang & Olufsen premium audio system, Faux suede interior treatments, and Extended leather upholstery through the Premium package. The Dynamic package brings in carbon ceramic brakes, Upgraded leather upholstery, and Nappa leather-wrapped racing seats with fixed backrests. The AWD Quattro model gets a few improvements such as carbon fiber interior and exterior trims, a fixed rear spoiler, a sport exhaust system, upgraded braking hardware, upgraded headlamp units, and fully adjustable sport seats for both the driver and the passenger.

Release Date

The 2023 Audi R8 Spyder is expected to hit the roads by early 2023. However, the official release date has not been announced yet.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

The 2023 Audi R8 Spyder will be powered by that familiar yet fabulous 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 motor. There are some cars out there that sound as gorgeous as the R8 V10, a better-sounding car is hard to find though. In the standard RWD layout, the motor is tuned to deliver 562 horsepower along with 406 lb-ft of torque. The motor is mated to a standard 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with a dedicated manual mode. In the Sport mode with the transmission in automatic mode, the unit tends to react a bit later than expected or required. Hence, it is best to use the paddle shifters and put the car in manual mode. With that, you can enjoy the exceptional performance along with that melodious soundtrack of the V10 screaming well over 7,000 rpm. The acceleration is strong, with a 0-60 mph sprint time of 3.2 seconds along with a quarter-mile time of 11.3 seconds. With the manual mode, you can let yourself have some tire smoking sessions too since the car becomes quite tail happy with the traction control turned off.

The Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet might not have a sweet-sounding naturally aspirated V10 strapped to its rear; however, its smaller 3.8-liter twin-turbo H-6 is brutal. Paired with the brilliant 8-speed PDK automatic transmission, the 911 Turbo can zoom hit 60 mph on the speedo within 2.8 seconds flat and completes the standing quarter-mile sprint within 10.2 seconds as well. The Lamborghini Huracan EVO has the similar 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 from the R8 but is tuned to push out a beefy 602 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. As a result, the Lambo sprints to 60mph from a standstill within 2.9 seconds despite being an RWD car.

2023 R8 Spyder Ride and Handling

Suspensions on supercars are generally tuned towards the stiffer side for handling and stability purposes. However, the R8’s springs are adaptive units that deliver a proper balance. While the ride has some amount of stiffness, you won’t feel the sharp impacts, and cruising out on the freeways becomes a smooth experience too. The steering is light at low speeds but offers excellent precision and feedback. In Sports settings, the suspension becomes stiffer with the steering becoming heavier and more responsive as well.

2023 R8 Spyder Braking Performance

The braking performance of the 2023 Audi R8 Spyder is excellent, obviously. At the front, the car gets 14.4-inch rotors, and 14-inch rotors at the rear. With this setup, the R8 comes to a halt from 60 mph within 112 feet sharp. The optional Dynamic package swaps out the regular brakes with carbon ceramic units that offer even better braking performance with shorter stopping distance as well. The brakes do feel sharp at low speeds but you can live with it, especially since the car always wants to do silly speeds in no time at all.

The Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet, like other vehicles from the brand, has some terrific braking prowess with its stock brakes. At the front, the 911 gets big 16-inch rotors and at the rear, the rotors are 14.9-inch units. With a curb weight of 3,790 lbs, the 911 Turbo can stop from 60 mph within 100 feet sharp. The Lamborghini Huracan EVO has similar brakes to the Audi R8 but gets more aggressive tuning due to more output figures. Moreover, the Huracan weighs less than its cousin too. Due to that, the Huracan has a stopping distance of 93 feet only but we like the R8’s brakes better for their smoothness.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

Supercars are born with drinking disorders, but the enthusiasts have always been okay with it for the performance they deliver. The 2023 Audi R8 has 14 mpg of city mileage only according to the EPA while out on the highways, the number manages to cross 20 mpg. However, the numbers do fall rapidly if you tend to use that manual mode quite often and have a heavy right foot. The combined mileage is rated at 17 mpg. Even with a sizable 21.1-gallon gas tank under it, the R8 has 295 miles of city driving range and a decent 485 miles of highway driving range.

The Porsche 911 Turbo might have a smaller motor but its brutal power figures and even more aggressive tuning result in R8-lie mpg numbers. In the city limits, the car returns an average of 15 mpg and on the highways, it returns 20 mpg on average. The combined mileage is similar to the R8 at 17 mpg. The smaller 17.6-gallon gas tank of the 911 Turbo provides even shorter driving range figures than the R8 here. The Lamborghini Huracan EVO has the least fuel efficiency numbers here due to its more power and sportier tuning of the powertrain. As a result, it delivers only an average of 13 mpg in cities and 18 mpg on highways.

Interior
9.0/10

We have always loved the R8’s cabin right from the start, especially due to its driver’s cockpit and luxury appointments. Yes, tall drivers and passengers, especially those over 6 feet, can find themselves a bit confined inside the cabin but it’s adequate for most of us. The 2023 R8 gets premium leather upholstery as standard along with soft-touch materials on all the exposed surfaces. The seats get power adjustments and heating as standard, offering plenty of support and comfort over long drives as well. You can further get Nappa leather wrapping for the seats with fixed backrests from the optional features list and can extend the leather upholstery further throughout the cabin as well. Auto climate control is standard too. To enhance the appeal, even more, faux suede inserts are offered as well as optional extras. The storage spaces inside the cabin are scarce, even for sports car standards and you’d want to carry the least amount of stuff possible while driving the R8. The trunk at the front has only 4 cu-ft of space on offer that can hardly fit a small luggage bag and some small grocery items.

The Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet is one of the few cars in the class to get extensive customization options. As standard, the 911’s cabin is comfy and has a driver-oriented layout with a beautiful analog-digital instrument cluster. The controls can feel quite button-heavy but are well stacked within the center console and dashboard, to access easily from the driver’s seat. While the R8’s cabin feels quite comfortable and polished, the 911’s cabin is above a few notches. The cargo capacity is impressive on the 911 too, at 13.8 cu-ft available space excluding the spaces inside the cabin. The Lamborghini Huracan EVO’s cabin is as edgy and sharp as the car’s performance and the shrieks from the V10. The dashboard and the seats have body-colored inserts and the dashboard design along with its layout feels like the cockpit of a jet fighter, especially with that red flip cover over the engine start-stop button. The comfort levels are on the lower side due to the firm seats but offer plenty of support.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 R8 Spyder include:

  • Automatic climate control
  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated seats
  • Digital instrument panel
  • Faux suede interior treatments
  • Extended leather upholstery

How intuitive is the 2023 R8 Spyder’s infotainment system?

Audi completely omitted the infotainment display from the R8’s cabin. Yes, you read that right. Instead, the car gets its infotainment system integrated within the big 12.3-inch Audi’s Virtual Cockpit screen behind the steering wheel. It can be controlled through the rotary control knob that is also touch-sensitive along with the steering-mounted controls as well. Standard features include Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, HD Radio, satellite radio, a five-speaker sound system, two USB ports, Bluetooth, a wireless device charging pad with a signal booster, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. You can also upgrade to a premium 13-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system for a better audio experience.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2023 R8 Spyder include:

  • 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster
  • Navigation
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • HD Radio
  • Satellite radio
  • Five-speaker sound system
  • Two USB ports
  • Bluetooth
  • Wireless device charging pad with signal booster
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
Exterior
9.0/10

The Audi R8 looks completely different from the brand’s other vehicles, and we love its design. At the front, the big grille doesn’t look as outlandish as the ones you’d see on the Q6 or the RS E-Tron. Instead, the grille along with the blacked-out air intake grilles looks proper with the sharp and edgy designs on the bumper. The LED headlamps with the LED DRLs further enhance the sharp appearance of the car and the clamshell hood gets a couple of character lines as well. The side profile is quite busy with the doors channeling all the air into the vertically stacked engine air intakes on either side. At the rear, you'll find a familiar R8 design with sleeker LED tail lamps, an auto-deployable rear spoiler or wing, and two big exhaust pipes.

Porsches have always strived through their scintillating performance, handling, and humble yet classy exterior designs. The 911 still gets the original exterior appeal, especially with those headlamp units which now house the iconic four-point LED DRLs that originated with the 918 Spyder. The rear end of the 911 looks more interesting and appealing than its front fascia, complete with a sleek LED continuous tail light unit and a couple of big exhaust pipes. The Lamborghini Huracan Spyder looks outright angry with a low-slung stance at the front. It also has the shortest roofline here, making ingress and egress a bit of a job in a hurry. Those Y-shaped LED DRLs within the headlamps look unmistakable from a distance and the hood also gets a matching Y shape too.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 20-inch wheels
  • Power-folding, heated mirrors with auto dimming
  • Auto-deploying rear spoiler
  • Carbon-ceramic brakes
  • LED headlamps
  • Carbon fiber exterior accents
Safety
9.0/10

The 2023 Audi R8 Spyder doesn’t have a crash-test score and neither does any of the previous models either. Since it is a costly affair to crash-test exotic cars such as the R8, one simply relies on the provided safety techs and the brand’s reputation in making safe cars. Disappointingly, the R8 lacks all the necessary advanced driver assistance techs, even from the optional list too. However, the basics are covered with features such as traction control, stability control, anti-lock braking system, and parking sensors.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Emergency braking assist
  • Automatic high beam control
  • Traction and stability control
  • Post-collision safety system
  • Passenger airbag occupant sensing deactivation
Competition
9.0/10

2023 R8 Spyder vs 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet

The Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet might have an understated exterior and interior appeal than the R8 here but offers a more brutal performance. Moreover, the 911 gets more safety techs than the R8 from its optional features list and better handling courtesy of the enhanced techs. While the 911 is more high-tech than the R8, it lacks the thrill of the screaming V10, which can be had at a much lower price point. The R8’s practicality department is even worse than the 911 since the latter has a more spacious cabin with a bigger trunk.

2023 R8 Spyder vs 2022 Lamborghini Huracan EVO Spyder

The Lamborghini Huracan is the more extreme version of the R8 with a much heftier price tag. While both the cars are mechanically similar to quite an extent sharing a similar engine and brakes, the Huracan has a more aggressive tuning for its powertrain with more power and torque figures on tap. With a more bias on performance and handling, the Huracan compromises on practicality and comfort part, due to its even smaller trunk and firmer seats.

Final Verdict
7.8/10

If you have a couple of hundred grand to spare, get yourself the R8 Spyder since you’re gonna miss it once it's gone for good. The R8, though carrying a hefty price tag, challenges much pricier cars in the class with its performance and a few cars are able to match the V10 madness that the car is blessed with. Apart from having that glorious motor, you get a comfortable cabin with adequate features and entertainment techs to cover you while you’re out on long drives. The ride of the R8 is surprisingly balanced and it can be adjusted through the driving modes, especially due to the adaptive dampers. Overall, the R8 is one of a kind in this era of supercars having multiple turbos strapped to smaller V8s, and getting one makes absolute sense too.
