Review

The 2022 Audi TT has been released in June 2022 and is on sale at present.

Supercars and hypercars have become one of the most glorified and talked-about topics over the last decade, but compact and fun-to-drive sports cars still make more sense. Among the iconic sports cars across the globe, the Audi TT deserves special mention since this compact car wearing the four-ring badge got its name from the legendary Isle of Man TT motorcycle racing event. Moreover, the TT was constructed using the brand’s first laser welding tech for making the overall design more seamless. While the last two generations of the two-seater coupe got an optional VR6, the latest third-generation model only gets a few turbocharged four-pot motors to choose from. However, the US market gets only a single turbocharged motor as standard.

Features
4.0/10

The 2022 Audi TT Coupe is offered in a single and handsomely-equipped trim level with a starting price of $49,800. For this price, the car gets a handsome list of features such as two-zone automatic climate control, LED exterior lights, a premium Bang & Olufsen audio system with 12 speakers, leather upholstery, navigation, and a wireless device charging pad among several other features. Unlike other Audi vehicles, the TT Coupe gets only a single optional package, the S Line Competition package, that further adds bigger 19-inch wheels with summer performance tires, blacked-out exterior trims, brake calipers painted in red, a sport suspension setup, fixed rear wing, and a combination of faux leather and suede upholstery for the seats.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

Being a small sports car, the 2022 Audi TT doesn’t get any big and burly motors under its hood. Rather, it makes do with a compact 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 motor. However, that motor makes a decent 228 horsepower along with 258 lb-ft of torque. The output figures might not feel much on paper, but given the compactness of the car, you’ll be impressed by the way the TT pulls. The coupe takes only 5.2 seconds to complete the 0-60mph sprint, a respectable time for the class. Other than that, the motor feels just at home in day-to-day driving scenarios and can cruise at highway speeds all day long. The motor is mated to a standard 7-speed DCT unit that offers quick and precise shifts. There is a dedicated manual mode to make things sportier with the help of steering-mounted paddle shifters.

Lexus has always been making relaxed luxury vehicles and the RC 300 isn’t quite different either. Despite making more power than the Audi TT, it takes a longer 6.4 seconds to complete the 0-60mph run. The Mercedes-Benz C Class coupe also gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter motor that makes more torque and power than the Audi TT. Despite that, it is only marginally quicker than the Audi TT in both 0-60mph and quarter-mile runs. The BMW 4 Series is also marginally quicker than the Audi TT during 0-60mph runs even though it makes more power, and has the highest torque output here.

2022 Audi TT coupe Ride and Handling

The Audi TT has been designed and produced to offer athletic handling along with a punchy performance at all times. While the Audi TT does perfectly what it is meant to, it compromises slightly on the comfort part with its stiff ride quality. However, the stiffness fades gradually as you progress on the speedo. High-speed stability is spectacular and, around the corners, the coupe leans the least possible as well. The car also gets an optional Sport suspension setup for enhanced handling but it is best suited if you plan on visiting the tracks often.

2022 Audi TT coupe Braking Performance

The 2022 Audi TT gets a set of decent-sized brakes to handle the stopping duties. At the front, the car gets 12.3-inch rotors while the rear wheels get a pair of 11.8-inch rotors. The brakes are capable enough to stop the Audi TT completely from 60mph within a mere 103 feet. The brakes are responsive throughout the speed range and you’ll get a good amount of feedback from the brakes too.

The Lexus RC 300 gets a pair of bigger front and rear brakes than the Audi TT. In spite of getting bigger, with 13.2-inch front and 12.2-inch rear rotors, the Lexus RC 300 takes considerably longer, 112 feet to stop from 60mph. However, the longer stopping can be justified due to a few hundred pounds of more curb weight of the RC 300 as compared to the TT. The Mercedes-Benz C Class coupe gets 13.0-inch front and 11.8-inch rear rotors. It also manages to halt from 60mph within 111 feet flat. The BMW 4 Series also fails to match with the Audi TT in its braking performance despite getting bigger front rotors.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

High fuel economy figures aren’t usually associated with sports cars but, with the latest and compact turbocharged powertrains, the iconic cars have become more fuel efficient than before. Since the 2022 Audi TT carries over unchanged, the car will return an average of 23mpg inside the cities while out on the highways, the number shoots up to 31mpg, according to the EPA. Even though the car gets a comparatively smaller gas tank of 14.5 gallons when compared to the rivals, the driving range numbers are good enough for a compact sports car.

The Lexus RC 300 is marginally less fuel efficient than the Audi TT on paper while its bigger, 17.4-gallon gas tank makes up for it with better driving range figures. The Mercedes-Benz C Class coupe is almost as fuel efficient as the Audi TT but beats the latter in driving range numbers due to its bigger, 17.4-gallon gas tank. The BMW 4 Series coupe is the most fuel-efficient sports car here with a considerably better highway mileage rating than all the competitors here on the list.

Interior
5.0/10

Automobiles from Audi have never disappointed a bit when it came to offering sporty, stylish, and elegant interiors, and the 2022 Audi TT coupe lives up to the expectations as well. The moment you step inside, the steering wheel and the seats will give you an R8-like vibe, especially due to the driver-focused design. Interestingly, the dashboard has been kept uncluttered with the least amount of physical buttons and the infotainment screen has been removed as well. Instead, the infotainment system is integrated within the fully digital driver’s instrument cluster and is controlled through the steering mounted controls as well as the rotary knob cum touchpad on the center stack. The front seats are the only usable pair among the four inside the cabin however, tall passengers might brush their heads often while driving or occupying the front passenger seats. The rear seats are ridiculously small and tight, making them useful only for carrying luggage or small cargo items. In terms of creature comforts, the cabin offers plenty such as heating for the front seats, two-zone automatic climate control, and leather upholstery.

The Lexus RC 300’s interior looks a bit dated when compared with the modern designs of the rivals here but there is no dearth of luxuries inside. Like the Audi TT, the RC 300’s rear seats are practically unusable due to tight legroom. The Mercedes-Benz C Class Coupe gets a similar interior to the regular C Class sedan but with smaller rear seats. Despite that, the rear seats are slightly more spacious than the rear seats of both the TT and the RC 300. The BMW 4 Series’s cabin looks the most modern yet rich among the rivals here and is the most spacious one too.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2022 Audi TT coupe include:

  • Two-zone automatic climate control
  • Heated front seats
  • Rake and reach adjustable steering wheel
  • Keyless ignition
  • Auto-dimming IRVM
  • Vanity mirrors for both driver and passenger

How intuitive is the 2022 Audi TT coupe’s infotainment system?

The 2022 Audi TT gets its infotainment system integrated within the big 12.3-inch driver’s instrument cluster display. As an added benefit, the infotainment system displays everything using the high-resolution screen, making for a better user experience than the conventional separate screen systems. Moreover, the highly configurable nature of the display also allows for performing several tweaks to the display as well. In terms of features, the system takes care of the basics quite well and then a few more. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, a wireless device charging pad, and satellite radio are some of the standard features of the infotainment system. The user interface is smooth courtesy of Audi’s superior proprietary software and the crisp graphics along with the easy layout further enhance the usability of the system.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2022 Audi TT coupe include:

  • 12.3-inch configurable display
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Bluetooth
  • 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system
  • Satellite radio
  • Navigation
  • Wireless device charging pad

Exterior
8.0/10

During its debut, the Audi TT came with a compact and handsome exterior design as per the standards back then. Over the years, the design of the car evolved just at the right pace and is among the better-looking sports cars out there. With a decent hint of design from the R8, the latest version of the Audi TT looks sporty enough. At the front, the blacked-out exterior trims give the sporty appeal of the car while the standard LED headlamps with the LED DRLs look striking even during daytime. The car’s on-paper dimensions are also smaller than a majority of the rivals in the segment and it looks smaller than its rivals in flesh too.

The Mercedes-Benz C Class Coupe is quite the looker and looks sportier than it actually is. Additionally, with the latest design language from Merc, the C Class coupe looks more elegant and luxurious than before from the outside as well. The Lexus RC 300 looks the most outlandish one here, especially due to the latest spindle grille design it wears. Other than that, several sharp design cues of the car starting from the front continue at the rear end too. The BMW 4 Series, with its awkward and big front grille, might remind you of Bugs Bunny’s incisors but the sleek LED headlamp units and the muscular lines on the bonnet saves the day.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Keyless entry
  • LED headlamps with LED DRLs
  • Power-operated and heated ORVMs
  • Rear spoiler(optional)
  • Blacked-out exterior trims(optional)

Safety
9.0/10

Surprisingly, the latest model of the Audi TT did not go through the crash tests from both the NHTSA and the IIHS. On top of that, the car misses out on some important safety features such as forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera system. As standard, the car gets Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and parking sensors as standard, apart from the basic safety techs.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Traction Control
  • Self-leveling headlamps
  • 4-Wheel ABS

2022 Audi TT coupe vs 2022 Lexus RC 300

The Lexus RC 300 might not give the Audi TT a tough time in terms of handling but it looks a lot more aggressive than the latter. Other than the looks, the RC 300 is more comfortable on the inside even though it has a slightly dated interior design. In terms of performance, the RC 300 makes more power than the Audi TT, but it’s the latter that’s quicker due to the standard AWD layout. Overall, the RC 300 would make a good option if you’re looking for a cozy coupe with adequate power and decent fuel economy figures.

2022 Audi TT coupe vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz C Class coupe

The Mercedes-Benz C Class coupe is a pricier but more practical alternative to the Audi TT. Moreover, the C Class doesn’t get the athleticism that you’d find on the TT as well. Despite making more power and torque than the Audi TT, the C Class coupe is still marginally better at acceleration times to say the least. On the inside, the C Class simply overwhelms with the design and amazing comfort levels, some things you’d have to give up with the Audi TT.

2022 Audi TT coupe vs 2022 BMW 4 Series coupe

The BMW 4 Series coupe poses a threat to the Audi TT since the Beemer does fare better than the latter in almost every aspect. The 4 Series is also almost as quick as the Audi TT but returns more fuel economy figures than the latter even though it makes more power. On the inside, the 4 Series is clearly a winner since it is more spacious and offers practical rear seats too as compared to the Audi TT. Overall, the BMW 4 Series would be a better investment if you don’t mind the awkward front design.

Final Verdict

If you need a true sports car that can corner graciously without compromising too much on the ride comfort, the Audi TT can be preferred. Apart from the quick acceleration and the standard Quattro system, the TT has started to show its age when put against its updated rivals. However, the car makes for an excellent city vehicle due to its highly compact design and excellent maneuverability within tight spaces. If the higher-than-average pricing of the car doesn’t bother you, the Audi TT is a good enough vehicle in its class.
