Review

Even though Cadillac updated a few things on the XT6 recently for the 2022 model year, it still needs an elaborate addition of features, especially in the luxury and design area.

The crossover segment has been getting saturated with more and more brands introducing crossovers of various sizes across the segments. To retain a fair share of the market, Cadillac introduced the XT6 back in 2019 and slotted it between the popular XT5 and the macho Escalade. However, the XT6 received quite a bit of criticism since it did not offer anything extra, or rather missed a few points when compared to its American counterparts. Even though Cadillac updated a few things on the XT6 recently for the 2022 model year, it still needs an elaborate addition of features, especially in the luxury and design area.

Features
7.0/10

The 2023 Cadillac XT6 will see no major updates and will continue to be offered in three trim levels. The base trim level gets a turbocharged four-pot motor while the Premium Luxury and the Sport trims get the 3.5-liter V6 motor as standard. Moreover, both the mid-level and the top-end trims get AWD layout as standard as well. The base Luxury trim gets a starting price of $48,595 and gets a long list of comfort and convenience features as standard. The features include a Panoramic sunroof, simulated leather upholstery, heated front seats, and three-zone automatic climate control among a few others. Moving up to the Premium Luxury trim will get you the optional V6 from the base trim as standard along with a wireless device charging pad, a power-adjustable steering column with heating for the steering wheel, leather seats for the first and second rows, and wooden interior accents. The top-end Sport trim justified its name with AWD layout as standard that also gets a special sport tuning, a sport-tuned adaptive suspension setup, trim-specific styling, and Brembo brakes with red painted calipers.

We Recommend

For an ultimate bang for the buck, the base Luxury trim with the AWD layout is recommended which also takes care of the fuel economy part. However, for additional performance and more creature comfort features, the mid-level Premium Luxury trim would be a better choice.

Release Date

As per the latest updates, the 2023 Cadillac XT6 has already been released and its production has commenced in early June 2022. We expect it to hit the dealerships by fall 2022.

Engine and Performance
6.0/10

The 2023 Cadillac XT6 will be offered with the same turbo four-pot motor and the naturally aspirated V6. The base 2.0liter turbocharged LSY I-4 unit generates a maximum of 235 horsepower along with 258 lb-ft of torque. Even though the power output figures might not win any brownie points nor would it tingle the enthusiasts, still it is adequate for day-to-day usage purposes along with relaxed highway journeys. The motor remains mostly relaxed courtesy of the standard 9-speed automatic transmission however, pushing it for those quick overtakes would require prior planning and the motor would leave you wanting for more. The 3.6-liter LGX V6 unit develops a healthy 310 horsepower along with 271 lb-ft of torque. With the base engine onboard, the XT6 accelerates from naught to sixty within a leisurely 7.5 seconds while with the V6, the time comes down to 5.4 seconds flat.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged motor under its hood that makes more power and torque than the XT6's 2.0-liter unit. As a result, it accelerates quicker off the line with a 0-60mph time of 6.8 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 15.2 seconds respectively. With the recent updates, the BMW X5 has become the most powerful one in the class in its base form courtesy of its now-standard 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 that is paired to a hybrid system for more efficiency and smoother power delivery. Naturally, it is the quickest one here with a zero to sixty time of 4.7 seconds only along with a quarter-mile time of 13.4 seconds. The Audi Q7, with its base 2.0-liter turbo four-pot motor, has similar power and performance figures to the Mercedes GLE 350.

2023 Cadillac XT6 Ride and Handling

Driving the Cadillac XT6 would make you realize how far these modern and big crossovers have come in terms of driving dynamics. Despite that, the XT6 doesn't pack in any "wow" factor in terms of its driving characteristics. Yes, it is quite comfortable and the cabin remains silent even when you go over broken roads as well. The steering feels mediocre with a slightly disconnected feel at low speeds. The inconsistent and sharp throttle response makes it nearly impossible to accelerate without a jolt. With the AWD layout, the SUV feels slightly more confident over slippery conditions. With the adaptive sport suspension on the Sport trim, the XT6 isn't very sporty either but the handling is better than the base and the mid-level Premium Luxury trims.

2023 Cadillac XT6 Braking Performance

Luxury crossovers do have a tendency to weigh on the higher side hence, a need for capable braking hardware is an absolute necessity. The 2023 Cadillac XT6 will get a pair of rather small-sh, 12.6-inch rotors up front along with 12.4-inch rotors at the back. With this setup, the crossover manages to come to a halt within 134 feet, which is average for the class.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 350's brake size figures have been kept under wraps but its performance is rather decent. With 5,000 lbs plus curb weight, the brakes of the SUV halt it within 132 feet. The BMW X5's brake sizes were also not revealed by the brand but it is the heftiest one here. Despite that, the SUV comes to a complete stop from 60mph within 134 feet. The Audi Q7 impresses here with its 117-feet stopping distance.

Fuel Economy
6.7/10

The word fuel efficiency was never quite synonymous with luxury vehicles but with the recent trend of some of these vehicles getting downsized turbocharged motors, the scenario has changed. With the base turbocharged motor under the hood, the 2023 Cadillac XT6 will return an average of 21mpg during city driving while highway driving will see the number rise to 27mpg. On paper, the numbers might look promising but they're just average for the class. With a decent-sized 19-gallon gas tank, the XT6 offers almost 400 miles of city driving range along with over 500 miles of highway driving range as well.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 disappoints here with its lackluster EPA ratings. Despite getting a small 2.0-liter turbocharged motor, the SUV only manages to return 19mpg of city mileage and 26mpg of highway mileage. However, a sizable 22.5-gallon gas tank saves it from further disappointment. The BMW X5 is the real champ here with its respectable gas mileage ratings despite having a bigger and more powerful I-6 motor under its hood. The Audi Q7 takes the middle ground in terms of EPA ratings since the numbers are at par with the rivals in the class.

Interior
9.0/10

The cabin of the 2023 Cadillac XT6 will please you with its overall quality and space. There are plenty of soft-touch and padded surfaces in place of exposed plastic bits and the simulated leather upholstery on the base trim feels quite premium too. The dashboard is quite stylish with multiple design elements merging together while it remains mostly free from buttons. Cadillac tried to add a cool and retro vibe with a rotary control knob on the center stack for audio controls that does its job quite well; however, a few capacitive touch buttons might require pressing them more than once to register the input. The third row is decently spacious even for adults but tall passengers might feel short in the legroom, especially over long distances. Some creature comfort features include a power-adjustable steering column with heating for the steering wheel, a three-zone automatic climate control, and heating for the front seats. The cargo capacity behind the third-row seats is quite the disappointment with only 12.6 cu-ft of space on offer.

As is the case with almost every Mercedes-Benz vehicle, the GLE 350 also gets an opulent cabin with an elegant design and plenty of luxuries. Moreover, the interior dimensions of the GLE 350 are more than the XT6's cabin and it feels more spacious too in flesh as well. The cargo capacity is generous at 33.3 cu-ft however, it doesn't get third-row seats. The BMW X5 has a driver-centric dashboard design with a user-friendly layout while the overall cabin is quite well-appointed with an abundance of standard features in place. The Audi Q7 has the most advanced interior designs here and gets a screen-heavy dashboard that also looks quite cool. The Q7 also gets a three-row seating configuration but the third-row seats are best suited for children or stowing extra luggage items. The cargo capacity is marginally better at 14.2 cu-ft than the XT6's 12.6 cu-ft of space.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 Cadillac XT6 include:

  • Faux leather upholstery
  • Remote ignition
  • Tri-zone automatic climate control
  • Heated front seats
  • Power-adjustable steering column
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Wood interior accents
  • Two-way power lumbar support for driver and front passenger

How intuitive is the 2023 Cadillac XT6's infotainment system?

As mentioned earlier, the Cadillac XT6 gets a handsome list of features along with tech features even though they are at par with its rivals. The 2023 XT6 will come with a standard 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit along with standard features including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a total of USB ports, satellite radio, HD radio, and an 8-speaker audio system. On the higher trim levels, the infotainment display unit remains constant, unfortunately, while the increase in features is only a few such as a premium 14-speaker Bose audio system, navigation, and a wireless device charging pad.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2023 Cadillac XT6 include:

  • 8-inch touch screen display
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Bluetooth
  • A total of six USB ports
  • HD Radio
  • Satellite radio
  • Eight-speaker stereo
  • Wi-Fi hotspot

Exterior
6.0/10

On the outside, the Cadillac XT6 doesn't disappoint a bit. However, the wow factor of the design ends while you move gradually towards the rear end of the SUV. At the front, the XT6 gets the latest design theme from Cadillac, and that Cadillac's crest-shaped front grille flanked by the sleek LED headlamp units gives the crossover a sporty appeal. Lower down the front fascia, the front bumper gets several sharp design elements while the vertical LED DRLs stand out among the crowd. On the side, the SUV gets a couple of sculpted character lines running across the doors while on the lower part of the doors, the SUV gets chrome garnishes installed by default. A 6.6-inch ground clearance of the SUV makes it strictly an urban cruiser and less suitable for rough trails.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 has a typical design language from the brand and you'd lose it easily amidst the crowd of more handsome crossovers. It has a longer wheelbase despite its shorter length when compared to the XT6 and has a slightly better ground clearance too. The BMW X5 has been consistent both in terms of practicality and design, with the latter part being evident from the latest design of the SUV. Even though the increasing size of BMW's signature Kidney grille design has nearly ruined a few of its vehicle's front-end appeal, the X5 has been spared, at least for now. With an impressive ground clearance of 8.5 inches, you can take the SUV to mild off-roading sessions post equipping it with the AWD system. The Audi Q7 is a sizable full-size crossover from the brand and gets one of the most outlandish front-end designs in the class. Even though it is close to the XT6 in terms of exterior dimensions on paper, it feels slightly bigger in flesh.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 18-inch/20-inch wheels
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Roof rails
  • Power liftgate with Hands-free operation
  • LED headlights
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Power-folding ORVMs

Safety
9.0/10

The Cadillac XT6 has been criticized to quite some extent due to its lack of any outstanding features to set itself apart from the crowd. However, the SUV got one of the key areas absolutely right, that is the safety aspect. The 2022 Cadillac XT6 scored a perfect 5-star rating from the NHTSA while the IIHS awarded it with the prestigious Top Safety Pick +. Right from the base trim, the XT6 gets plenty of safety features along with ADAS techs as standard which are Front pedestrian braking Forward collision mitigation and automatic emergency braking, Lane keeping assist, Front and rear parking sensors, Blind-spot monitoring, Rear cross-traffic alert, and Safety alert seat.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Front pedestrian braking Forward collision mitigation and automatic emergency braking
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Safety alert seat

Competition

2023 Cadillac XT6 vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 stands as a preferred option for luxury-oriented shoppers. On the inside, it offers a more plush cabin than the XT6 along with more creature comfort features. In terms of practicality too, the GLE 350 is better than the XT6 however, it misses out on the third-row seats unlike the latter. The XT6's third-row seats are mostly impractical for adults and can fit children only along with some extra luggage items. Despite all the good things about the GLE 350, it starts at a much higher base price than the XT6, making the latter a cheaper option for budget-oriented shoppers.

2023 Cadillac XT6 vs 2022 BMW X5

Undeniably, the BMW X5 always set itself apart from the crowd with its impressive performance and practicality. The latest version of the SUV sees a significant bump in the base price but also gets a more powerful base engine to start with. As a result, it is clearly a better alternative to the Cadillac XT6 but its price tag might be a concern for some shoppers. Despite packing in plenty of power, the X5 returns similar fuel economy figures to the XT6 as well.

2023 Cadillac XT6 vs 2022 Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 stands as one of the most tech-rich and outlandishly-designed crossovers in the segment. Much like the Cadillac XT6, the Q7 also gets three rows of seats but the third-row seats are nearly impractical for adults. In terms of cargo capacity, it is marginally better than the XT6 but the Q7's real strength lies in its handling and comfort. Additionally, the Q7 gets a standard Quattro AWD layout that allows it to be more usable in slippery conditions right from the base trim onwards unlike the XT6.

Final Verdict

Final Verdict

The Cadillac XT6 is still preferred by those who love having the iconic Cadillac crest on their vehicles. With being average in a majority of the key areas, the strength of the XT6 lies in its lower base price and the impressive safety aspect with features that are offered as optional in some rivals. You can always choose the Sport trim of the XT6 for better handling, but rivals such as the X5 or the Q7 make more sense even if they cost more.
