Recently we covered how Jeep Grand Wagoneer and the Wagoneer and its long-wheelbase version will now get a Hurrican twin-turbo inline-6 engine. Today we bring you the EPA estimates of the Grand Wagoneer powered by Stellantis’ Hurrican engine. But before we do that let’s have a look at the powertrain available on the SUV. It comes with a choice of two powertrains a 6.4-liter V8 that makes 471 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque. And the all-new 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine. The Hurricane engine makes 510 hp and costs $2,000 extra to equip on the Grand Wagoneer.

Both the engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard. Coming to the gas mileage figures, the Grand Wagoneer when powered by the twin-turbo six-cylinder engine sending power to the rear-wheels return 15 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway, and 17 mpg combined. While the same powertrain with 4WD returns 14 mpg in the city, 20 mpg on the highway, and 17 mpg combined. While the V8-powered Grand Wagoneer when had in rear-wheel-drive configuration returns 13 mpg in the city, 19 mpg on the highway and 15 mpg combined.

While the same with 4WD returns 13 mpg in the city, 18 mpg on the highway, and 15 mpg combined. Compared to the naturally aspirated V8 the Hurrican six-cylinder engine thus not only makes more power and torque but also returns at most 2 mpg more be it in the city, on the highway, or in mixed driving conditions. Thus it makes the $2,000 premium for the new engine gullible over an SUV that starts at $87,995. While come might be also wondering that despite the better mileage from the new engine the EPA ratings are still very low.

So to get a better picture of that let’s compare its gas mileage with some of its key rivals like the Lincoln Navigator and the Cadillac Escalade. Starting with the Lincoln Navigator, this one is powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 (making 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque) engine and is also available in both 2WD and 4WD configurations. The 2WD model returns 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. While the 4WD model returns 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. Compared to the Grand Wagoneer it returns better gas mileage.

The biggest reason behind this is that the Grand Wagoneer tips the scale at 6,340 pounds while the Navigator weighs just 5,685 pounds. For the added weight the engine on the former also makes more power and torque than the latter thus sipping more fuel in the process. Coming to its next rival, the Cadillac Escalade comes with a 6.2-liter V8 engine (making 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque) and a 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-6 engine (making 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque). The former powertrain with 2WD returns 14 mpg and 20 mpg in the city and on the highway respectively.

While the same with 4WD returns 14 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. Compared to the Grand Wagoneer’s V8 the Escalade returns 1 mpg in both city and highway driving conditions. While the Escalade’s turbodiesel returning 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway is in a league of its own. That said, the reason here also remains the same as we saw in the case of the Navigator. So to conclude, these bulky three-row SUVs are inherently gas-guzzlers but the Grand Wagoneer among them is the least efficient regardless of the powertrain it is equipped with.
