The Mercedes-AMG G 63, well two models, have been spied winter testing sporting a facelift. The current generation of the G-Wagon has been available since 2018, with the AMG model available since the 2019 model year. Hence, having seen these models winter testing at night sporting a decent amount of camouflage on the front and rear fascia gives us the impression that the G 63 is getting a facelift even though it is a bit early in this generation’s life cycle.

The G-Wagon has its traditional boxy shape for which it is known but the two models spied had quite a bit of camouflage on the front fascia which even covered the hood and goes all the way to the A-pillars. However, there is no change expected on the A-Pillars, as compared to the lines of the current design present on the AMG G 63 with the prototype spied here we do not notice any major design changes.

Hence, we state that based purely on the camouflage, it will be on the grille and on the front bumper. We do expect a slightly larger grille and bumper modifications to accommodate that. With the nip-and-tuck to the front bumper, we expect larger intake vents giving for a more aggressive look, along with an improved under flooring for off-roading, not that the current G-Wagon is any less, without making changes to the headlights.

From the side, we do notice that the camouflaged Mercedes-AMG G 63 has been outfitted with the optional Trail package on both the G-Wagons, this is with respect to the 20-inch AMG Twin 5-Spoke wheels which come in matte black and are added to the AMG G 63 only when you equip the Trail Package. This package also adds Off-road optimized AMG suspension, black underguards, mud flaps, and the above-mentioned 20-inch wheels.

This leads us to believe that AMG G-Wagon when the facelift is introduced it could have the trial package included as part of standard equipment, it has been seen in the past that Mercedes-Benz does have a tendency to standardize optional equipment if it is a popular enough option. When we come to the rear, we do notice a nip and tuck to the rear bumper as well, even though the taillights have not been changed.

However, we were informed that the interior was mostly covered. This does indicate that on the interior there will be significant changes, a possibility of executive rear-seats. We do expect the latest MBUX system, however, we do not know about the Hyperscreen making an appearance, but we do think they have added the S-Class’s infotainment unit and we do expect ambient lighting as well as part of that, considering the rest of the lineup has it standard or available as an option.

In terms of powertrain, we do not expect any changes to the powertrain, we expect the same 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 engine which makes 577 hp paired to a 9-speed AMG automatic transmission with power going to the AWD drivetrain. It will do 0-60 in 4.5-seconds with an optional top speed of 149 mph (electronically limited to 137 mph) and has a towing capacity of up to 7,000 pounds.

As the 2022 Model year AMG G63 (MSRP of $156,450) is already available for sale we expect the facelift to be released in late 2022 or as a 2023 model year, with it being available for sale shortly after.
