The major rival to the Tesla Cybertruck, GMC Hummer EV, and the Ford F-150 Lightning is none other than the Rivian R1T. Now, the R1T has managed to push ahead of the competition by being the first to commence production. Rivian’s $1.5 billion plants in Normal, Illinois witnessed the first R1T rolling off the production line.

Know more about the Rivian:

Confirming this event, CEO and Founder RJ Scaringe tweeted, “After months of building pre-production vehicles, this morning our first customer vehicle drove off our production line in Normal! Our team's collective efforts have made this moment possible. Can't wait to get these into the hands of our customers!"

Rivian had earlier pushed the release date of the R1T further to July, 2021. Back then the chip shortage was cited as a reason for the delay. The automaker also wanted an established service network before rolling their cars onto the streets. To tackle the same, Rivian is now developing a $4.6 million facility in Michigan.

The Rivian R1T features a Quad motor setup that should be capable of throwing out 750 hp. Rivian won’t reveal any numbers, but the EV pickup is capable of doing 0-60 MPH in 3 seconds. The R1T is capable of wading through upto 3 ft. of water. It also boasts of an impressive towing capacity of 11,000 lbs.

As estimated by the EPA, the Rivian R1T is capable of 314 miles of range when equipped with 21” wheels. For 20" wheels, estimates show a range reduction of 10-15%, whereas a 5-10% reduction is inevitable in case of 22" wheels. The Rivian R1T is well thought out and features 68 cu.-ft. of cargo space. Interiors are very minimal, yet luxurious and feature a titanium speaker setup with a detachable Bluetooth speaker. The upholstery is done in vegan leather. It also packs in the Driver+ autopilot system. This means the R1T can steer itself, adjust speed, and change lanes on command.

The Rivian R1T is a commendable vehicle but faces tremendous competition. It has managed to be the first one to be able to roll out an EV Pickup, but the F-150 Lightning and Tesla Cybertruck have a massive fanbase. However, Rivian is gaining traction as it’s gearing up for an IPO valuation and the launch of its electric SUV, the R1S. As for now, we wish that the R1T receives the praise it deserves.
