The 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-class 4x4 squared was spied in nordschleife with the minimal coverup, which suggests an imminent reveal in upcoming weeks.

The baddest version of the Mercedes-Benz G-class seems to be up for some secret military duties. The G-Class 4x4 squared is detected in the latest spy photos. These photos come directly from our shutterbugs near the Nurburgring, where Mercedes has a development centre.

Although this prototype doesn't wear any coverup, it isn't hard to see what the rest of its surroundings are covering. So Mercedes decided to replace the camouflage with black taping for this prototype. This is a change from the previous test cars that had wheel arches disguised. Although it doesn't look professional, it does the job.

The 4x4 Squared option was offered on the G550-based G-Class. It featured some rigorous off-road gear, including portal axles, which gave the SUV its famous stance. This setup was taken from the 6x6 G-Class, initially designed for military use. It was only available in a civilian form for a short time.

The minimal camo and the testing frequency of the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class 4×42 suggest that its official unveiling might be coming up in a few months. The current G550 sports a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V-8 with 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, while the AMG G63 features the same engine but with output dialled up to 577 hp and 627 lb-ft. In both cases, a 9-speed automatic is standard.

The date for its worldwide debut has now been delayed by the rumour mill further up this year – possibly for a famous Munich Motor Show (IAA) reveal in just a few months.

A few months back, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class 4-x4 Squared was seen out in the snow. This proves that the iconic SUV will be around despite all the streamlining efforts by its manufacturer. In keeping with the shift in the automotive landscape that is now focused on electrification.
