Stellantis recently unveiled the mighty 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine producing 500 HP and 400 HP in High Output (HO) and Standard Output (SO) variants respectively. Now as noticed by some people, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer configurator showed an inline-six V6 option, costing $2,000 extra. As per some reports, even the owner’s manual of 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer listed towing capacity of the new 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine.

Stellantis’s all-new 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six cylinder engine is developed for enhanced fuel efficiency, refinement and V8-equivalent performance. The new engine was designed on the basis of 2.0-liter turbo inline-four cylinder engine, currently available in the Jeep Wrangler, Wrangler 4xe, Cherokee and Grand Cherokee 4xe. The new Hurricane engine is designed to account for future integration with electrification for Stellantis’s modern low emission vehicles

As per some reports, the Hurricane engine was available as an $2,000 option on the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer configurator. However, after the leak, the same has been removed from Jeep’s website. Some leaked screenshots of 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer amended owner’s manual lists the towing specs of the all-new Hurricane engine. The owner’s manual revealed that the 3.0-liter models can offer up to 10,000 pounds of towing capacity.

The mentioned towing capacity is for models equipped with a towing package and RWD drivetrain. The different reports and Stellantis’s previous statements point at the usage of the high-output (HO) Hurricane engine in the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer would probably use the standard-output Hurricane engine. Currently, both the models are offered with larger capacity V-8 engines.

The 6.4-liter V8 engine in the Jeep Grand Wagoneer offers 471 HP and 454 lb-ft of torque. The high-output version of the Hurricane engine offers 500 HP and 475 lb-ft of torque. The 5.7-liter V8 engine with an eTorque hybrid system in the Jeep Wagoneer produces 392 HP and 404 lb-ft of torque. The standard-output version of the Hurricane engine produced 400 HP and 450 lb-ft of torque. Surely, the new-generation engine has an advantage over V8’s, offering a better power-to-weight ratio.

Stellantis intends to use this versatile engine with STLA Large and STLA Frame platforms in the near future along with electrification. So, it’s very much possible that the Hurricane engine can be used in newer Dodge Challenger and Charger models as well. Even RAM trucks will use it in the near future. Stellantis clearly said that the Hurricane engine will be used across different brands and products with longitudinal engine placement.

The starting price of the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is $88,640 and the Hurricane engine option will cost an additional $2,000. The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer is priced at $58,995, excluding additional charges. The new engine will be officially debuted at the 2022 New York International Auto Show in April. Looking at the versatile nature of Hurricane and its electrification potential, we expect the new engine to find home across different brands (Stellantis Group) and models.
