2019 Tesla Model X electric Review

Tesla has toned down the number of trims on the Model X for 2019 by just offering the Performance and Long Range trims, unlike the previous year model that had the 75D, 100D and P100D.

Often dubbed as the fastest acceleration SUV out there, the 2019 Tesla Model X, just like its cousin the Model S is here to lead the electric car supremacy upfront. Available in both Performance and Long Range Plus variants, the seven-seater SUV drops the structural 75D, 100D, and P100D models. Ranked at 5 in our SUV category, prices for the same start from an MSRP of $78,950.

Launched first in 2017, the Tesla Model X created ripples around the world for being one of the first full Electric SUVs that doesn’t compromise on performance or range. The Model X was known for its characteristic Falcon Wing doors, its Auto Summon and AutoPilot feature, and a lot more. With Tesla, rapidly expanding its supercharger network, the new 2019 Tesla Model X SUV becomes even more irresistible.

Tesla has revised the trim levels for the 2019 Model X SUV and the current year SUV comes in just 2 trims namely Performance and Long Range. Both trims have the same features but as the names suggest, both trims emphasize either performance or deliver high range.

The 2019 Tesla Model X, also comes with 4 years vehicle and 8 years battery and powertrain warranty respectively.

Engine and Performance
9.2/10

The basic powertrain of the 2019 Tesla Model X generates a maximum of 259 hp while the Performance model steps up the game with 503 hp. That being said, Tesla does give an idea of the type of motors that drives the Model X SUV. As with the Tesla logo that represents the cross-section of an electrical induction motor, the Tesla Model X employs a Dual 3 Phase, 4 Pole Induction motor with copper rotors. The front axle is powered by 1 motor while the rear axle is powered by the other one, hence giving the car the AWD drivetrain.

There is a single-speed direct transmission that does the job of transmitting power from the engine to the wheels. Characteristic of all-electric cars, torque is transmitted almost instantaneously to the wheels without any transmission loss that we usually experience with gas-powered cars. The transmission is quick to transfer power with the smallest throttle inputs and makes for effortless power delivery at all speeds.

The Model X has reached the zenith in delivering acceleration which to most competitors remains only a dream. Every model in the lineup sprints from zero to 60 mph in under 5 seconds. The Model X Performance trim takes less than 3 seconds to achieve the feat, making it one of the fastest vehicles around SUV or otherwise. The 2019 Tesla Model X SUV has brakes that match its acceleration. The Regenerative Braking system is swift as well and transition between frictional and regen braking is seen less at all speeds and situations.

Fuel Economy
9.9/10

Like all EVs, the Tesla Model X runs on electricity and needs charging from charging stations or your domestic outlet. One can charge the Model X via a standard 120-volt/240V outlet present. The Model X owners also have access to Tesla's ever-increasing nationwide network of Supercharger stations. At one of these stations, you can recharge up to 80 percent of the battery's full range in about half an hour. Additionally, owners can get up to 400 kWh (or about 1,000 miles) of charging for free each year at the Supercharger network, with a small fee incurred after that.

In terms of numbers, the Tesla Model X with its 295-mile range loses out to the All-New Jaguar I-pace while the Audi E-Tron, with its 248.5 miles of range loses out on the same. The advantage with Tesla is that the Supercharger stations are available in all parts of America and Tesla owners enjoy a lot of flexibility in that respect.

Interior
7.0/10

The Model X can seat 7 people inside it while the competition allows for only 5. The front seats are comfortable, supportive, and have plenty of room. Thanks to the panoramic windshield, driver visibility is outstanding. The second-row seats have ample space, but they lack the generous accommodations of some competitors' second rows. Additionally, some tall passengers may want more legroom. The third row is best left for the children, which isn't uncommon in a 3-row SUV.

Standard features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, a panoramic front windshield (featuring a single piece of glass that runs from the base of the windshield up to the roof over the front row of seats), 14-way power-adjustable front seats, and Falcon Wing rear doors. These double-hinged doors open from the roof and feature sensors to avoid obstacles when they open. Heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel are available.

There are a lot of features in the infotainment front of the 2019 Tesla Model X and Tesla provides Over the Air updates from time to time, to keep the system up to date. The Model X offers 88.1 cubic feet of cargo space which gets altered depending upon the seating configuration. That is one of the highest cargo capacities in the class, but there isn't a lot of small-item storage throughout the cabin. The third row folds flat, which helps when you want to haul large items.

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2019 Tesla Model X has an impactful design and looks extremely beautiful upfront. The only thing that's missing is a front grille which can make a car look even more appealing but Tesla being an electric car doesn't require one. Tesla's falcon doors open upwards making it look even cooler.

The car is sleek and has a low center of gravity which adds up to its safety too. In terms of dimensions, the Tesla Model X is the biggest when compared to its rivals in terms of length, width, and height. This translates to a commanding presence on the road and great space on the inside.

Where the Model X falls behind is in the ground clearance department as it offers the least within the competition. The Jaguar I-Pace has a decent ground clearance considering its SUV status.

Some of the exterior features include:

  • 3 Position dynamic LED turning lights
  • LED fog lights
  • Heated and Power adjustable ORVMs
  • 2" Receiver for hitch-mounted bike and ski carriers
  • Self-Presenting Front door
  • Keyless Entry
  • Falcon Wing Rear Doors

Safety
8.1/10

The Tesla Model X is perhaps the safest SUV in the market right now and has aced all tests, conducted by NHTSA. Standard driver assistance features include collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, and a rearview camera.

Other available optional features include a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, automatic parking, a summon feature, and the Autopilot system, which is a suite of driver assistance features that can at its highest level of application drive the car without human intervention

2019 Tesla Model X vs 2019 Audi E-Tron

The Audi E-Tron is Audi's way of telling that the future has arrived. The E-Tron goes like a stabbed rat and coupled it with Audi's Quattro system and you have a potent off-roader in your hands. The Audi E-Tron also comes loaded with plenty of features and a well-built cabin.

The Tesla Model X on the other hand takes performance to a whole new level. In terms of creature comforts and uniqueness, the Tesla Model X takes the lead with its space-age tech and ultra-luxurious cabin as well. Tesla may be struggling with the Build Quality of its Cars but in terms of future tech, it's still the Tesla that has its nose ahead.

2019 Tesla Model X vs 2019 Jaguar I-Pace

The Jaguar I-Pace, is the first effort from Jaguar in terms of an Eco-Friendly vehicle and boy have they pulled out a stunner. The I-Pace has a typical British exterior design character and offers great luxury, both on the exteriors and the Interiors. In terms of performance as well, it's no slouch.

The Tesla on the other hand offers a ton of high-tech features like AutoPilot assist, great safety ratings, a 17" Touch screen infotainment system, and a lot more. The Tesla is the more comfortable of the 2 to be in but is a tad less sporty to drive than the Jag.

Final Verdict

With the future being electric, Tesla has been at the forefront in bringing out the best electric cars of all types. The 2019 Model X is a big SUV from all angles and can seat 7 people in it with relative ease. In terms of range as well, the Model X is still one of the best in the business and the Supercharger network gives Tesla an unprecedented advantage.

Coupled to this, a big cargo area and a highly engaging car that offers minimal body roll around corners and you have the perfect holiday vehicle. The Tesla Model X may be an expensive option as compared to its rivals and may not be built as well as them but for what it offers, it certainly is one of the Best SUVs that money can buy without adding burden to the environment.
