Review

The all-new second-generation Toyota GR86 is all geared up to set a high bar in the affordable sports car segment. The 2022 Toyota GR86 underwent a complete design overhaul and performance refinement. With blazing GR (Gazoo Racing) badges on either side of the car, it is back with much more power, technology, and a bit of luxury.

The 2022 Toyota GR86 has been launched with the same being available for sale by the end of December 2021. The 2022 GR86 comes with a new and more powerful 2.4-liter naturally aspirated flat-four engine borrowed from Subaru. The new engine has resulted in a bump in power and torque figures and to accommodate the same the chassis, as well as, the suspension has been reworked. All this was done by Toyota's in-house performance brand Grazoo Racing (so the name GR86). These changes have not only made the 2022 GR86 faster but also brilliant handling and driving sports coupe.

Mechanical bits aside, other changes include a bigger infotainment screen, a slightly reworked interior, and a completely re-designed exterior. Staying true to its promise of providing a fun-to-drive sports coupe has not only kept the prices low, with the 2022 GR86 starting at just $27,700 but also thrown in a complimentary 1-year membership of the National Auto Sport Association (NASA). People looking for amateur racing and track days will for sure appreciate this. That said, will these changes be enough to justify a sports coupe when SUVs are rage? Let's find out in this review.

As the 2022 Toyota GR86 gets a more powerful and bigger engine thus it won't be able to match the numbers of the 2020 Toyota 86. That said, EPA hasn't rated the GR86 yet but as per the manufacturer when equipped with the 6-speed manual, the 2022 GR86 returns 19 MPG in the city, 26 MPG on the highway, and 21 MPG combined. While when had with the 6-speed automatic, you get 20 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and 24 MPG combined.

The lightest and least powerful Mazda Miata manages to return the best-in-class gas mileage figures among all followed by the Volkswagen Golf GTI. What's surprising to see here is even though the GR86 isn't the quickest or most powerful car it still manages a far lesser gas mileage.

Interior
6.5/10

The interior design is almost similar to what we see on the friendly rival of 2022 GR86, the Subaru BRZ except for the minor changes around the dashboard. The design is inspired by Gazoo Racing, and that's why you get a two-tone sporty cabin layout. It is not the most advanced cabin per se, yet you get sufficient tech with the new TFT digital display with a startup animation and a bigger infotainment screen, not to forget the sports steering wheel. The GR86 will carry over the 4 seat configuration from the previous model. The base trim gets fabric-trimmed sports seats while the Premium trim comes with Alcantara-trimmed seats.

The sporty red LED controls blend in with the theme. With six-way manual seat adjustments, you can easily adjust to the driving position as per your liking while two-way heating functionality for the front seats is reserved for the Premium trim. The sport-oriented cabin design is identical to the BRZ, still, the Toyota carries it better. The convenience features include dual-zone air-conditioning, auto-dimming rearview mirror, foldable rear seatback, one-touch and anti-pinch power windows, driver and passenger easy entry, and up to 2 12V DC power outlets.

The 2022 GR86 replaces the smaller and less intuitive infotainment with a bigger 8.0-inch touchscreen display. The infotainment system is powered by the latest Entune infotainment system. While smartphone connectivity is provided through wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. A SiriusXM radio subscription is also available. As for the audio, a six-speaker sound system is standard while the Premium trim gets an eight-speaker audio setup.

Except for the Volkswagen Golf GTI with its 5 person seating, all the other cars in the competition come with a seating capacity of either 4 or 2 people. The sporty cabin of the Toyota has ample space in both rows, however, the legroom could have been better. Although the front cabin is more spacious in the Mazda Miata while overall the Golf GTI offers a more spacious cabin. As for the trunk space, the sports car styling provides limited space of 6.3 cubic feet in the trunks of Toyota and Subaru, whereas the rivals like the Golf GTI offer more usable 17.4 cubic feet.

Exterior
6.5/10

The 2022 Toyota GR86 gets a stiffer and rigid chassis than the previous generation. As the GR86 uses a modified Subaru Global platform, there's a 50% increase in the torsional rigidity and strength. To keep the weight on the lower side, most of the components are crafted in aluminum alloy. The structure is altered in order to reduce the overall center of gravity. The exterior design is tweaked with advanced aerodynamics to provide better stability. The front fascia is updated with a GR-specific functional MATRIX grille, sleek LED headlamps, and functional air vents.

The uplifted rear fascia has reworked taillamps, an integrated spoiler, and massive chrome tip exhausts. Overall, the design looks sharper and better from each and every angle. The black design elements resemble the GR version of the Supra. Moreover, the frameless doors get distinct side skirts that fade at the end of the beltline. Also, the Premium trims come with an attractive 10-spoke 18-inch alloy similar to the ones we saw on the GR Yaris.

Even with certain major changes and upgrades including the engine, the weight is similar to the previous generation. In fact, the GR86 is the lightest sports coupe against the rivals except for the BRZ. There's up to a 1.2-inch increase in the length of the GR86, with identical width and a lower height by 0.3 inches. The ground clearance is much better than the previous generation. The rear track is much wider than before. Rival such as the Golf GTI is comparatively bigger in size, whereas the GR86 is quite compact with its sports car stance.

2022 Toyota GR86 vs 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata

The 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Toyota GR86 both belong to the same breed. Both have similar attributes but still the Miata has managed to woo more American buyers than the Toyota 86 had up till now. But with the more powerful engine the GR86 is ready to go head-on against the Miata.

If we go by the figures then the Miata is still at an advantage as even though it has a less powerful enigne, its lighter weight allows it not only to be quicker but also fuel-efficient compared to the GR86. While GR86 with small rear seats and a slightly bigger cabin still leads in terms of practicality.

2022 Toyota GR86 vs 2021 Volkswagen Golf GTI

The Volkswagen Golf GTI being a hatchback doesn't necessarily fall under the fun-to-drive coupe under thirty grand definition. But with limited offering in this dyimg breed people are left with no choice but to consider whatever they have at their disposal. Which brings us to this comparison between a sports coupe and a hot hatch.

The turbocharged engine power Golf GTI is not only powerful but also quicker than the GR86 by a margin. As for the fuel-efficiency here also the Golf GTI beats the GR86. While from practicality point of view not only the Golf GTI offers seating for five but a more spacious and adult friendly rear seats compared to the GR86.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

For the 2022 model, Toyota has made the much-awaited and necessary changes to its budget sports car. The Toyota 86 has gotten better with its GR tuned performance and GR theme that brings about aerodynamic changes to the design. No stone is left unturned to make the handling and agility more accurate. The structure is stiffer and reliable. While Toyota has also made sure that the GR86 looks different from its twin, the BRZ. That said, thanks to the changes this year you can still experience the old-school charm of a rear-wheel-drive naturally aspirated sports coupe even in 2022.
