The Toyota RAV4 started the rage for crossover SUVs about two decades ago, and since then, many players have launched very competitive products to take a major chunk of the pie.

The Toyota RAV4 started the rage for crossover SUVs about two decades ago, and since then, many players have launched very competitive products to take a major chunk of the pie. Toyota has revamped the RAV4 completely for the 2019 model, and we are glad it did. The 2019 Toyota RAV4 gets Tacoma-inspired styling and now looks more rugged than ever. The 2019 RAV4 got its much-awaited styling updates with comfortable interiors, modern technology, and driver assistance features across all the trims.

Features
7.0/10

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is available in five trims, namely the LE, XLE, XLE Premium, Adventure, and Limited. Toyota has tried to attract different buyers by offering comfortable cabin appointments across all the trims. The new RAV4 is based on Toyota’s TNGA platform, which is lightweight and safer as compared to previous-generation models. The base model is not overwhelming by any means, but the higher trims offer many features to be excited for.

Which trim should you buy?

The XLE Premium trim sits exactly in the middle of the trim hierarchy and is a balanced combination of features and value. It is equipped with features like dual-zone climate control, 8-way adjustable driver’s seat, leather-wrapped wheel, faux leather seating surfaces, etc. It is also a safe trim as it gets Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.0 and Star Safety System as standard. So we recommend the XLE Premium trim.

Engine and Performance
5.0/10

The 2019 RAV4 is equipped with a 2.5-Litre inline-four engine which produces about 203 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and is available as FWD as standard. You can also opt for an AWD configuration, which is optimized well for off-road conditions, and reworked axle ratios ensure better fuel efficiency.

The transmission fitted is not very active in selecting the perfect gear for acceleration. It is smooth but doesn’t make use of the 203 HP power output from the engine as we would expect. It isn’t a slouch, but compared with the rivals, the power delivery could have been better. Also, at higher speeds on the highways, the engine becomes a bit noisy and feels stressed if pushed too hard.

The RAV4 offers better acceleration than its rivals, but the way it accelerates on the highways is what could have been better. The drivetrain offers a decent mid-range but suffers in the top range. It does a 0-60 mph sprint in just 7.5 seconds and a quarter-mile drag is completed in 15.6 seconds. The Honda CR-V is a second slower than the RAV4. The Nissan Rogue offers the least output and is slower than the competition.

How well does the 2019 Toyota RAV4 handle?

The 2019 RAV4 is redesigned by Toyota from the bottom up, and it is now based on Toyota’s TNGA platform, which is claimed to be lighter and offer better stiffness than its predecessor. It is very stable on highway speeds and won’t scare you on a twisty section of the road. However, the steering doesn’t inspire the same level of confidence as some of the other cars in the segment.

The lower center of gravity has aided in handling, but it's still behind some better handling SUVs like the CX-5. It is paired with a good set of tires, and a well-tuned suspension will take care of potholes and other road undulations with ease. However, owing to a taller stance, there is the prevalence of slight body roll around the corners. The driver aids like electronic stability control help in keeping things on track while cornering hard.

Braking Performance

The 2019 RAV4 is equipped with larger size rotors upfront and comparable size rotors at the rear. It gets 12.0-inch rotors and 11.1-inch rotors at the front and rear, respectively. The rotors work hard and bring this SUV to a complete stop from 60 mph speed within 143 feet. Looking at the spec sheet, we expected it to offer better braking performance, but unfortunately, it needs an improvement in the braking department. The brake pedal feel is firm and affirmative, but it lacks the initial bite.

The Honda CR-V is the star of the braking game, and despite having smaller rotors at both ends, it performs exceptionally well and comes to a complete halt from 60 mph within 129 feet, which is quite commendable. The Nissan Rogue and Mazda CX-5 are very closely matched with respect to their braking performance. When comparing the curb weight, Mazda is the heaviest option in the competition at 3,541 lbs.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The 2019 RAV4 offers good fuel economy, especially considering its power output. It offers 25 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg in mixed driving conditions. With a fuel tank capacity of 14.5 gallons, the crossover can travel up to 363 miles, 479 miles, and 420 miles in the city, on the highways, and in mixed driving conditions, respectively.

The RAV4 and Rogue are closely matched when considering their fuel efficiency, fuel tank capacity, and range. The Mazda CX-5 is equipped with a bigger fuel tank but delivers slightly less fuel efficiency as compared to the RAV4. The CR-V is equipped with a smaller fuel tank and is less efficient, so it delivers the least range on a full tank of gas.

Interior
6.0/10

The 2019 RAV4 gets a well-designed interior with major changes inside the cabin. The seats are designed ergonomically and offer good support with adequate cushioning. The dashboard layout is neat, and it carries a floating infotainment screen in the center accompanied by climate control knobs just below the AC vents. Toyota has smartly used contrasting color-scheme and metallic trim inserts on the dashboard, steering wheel, and door trim pads, which look youthful and will excite the Z-generation.

As you climb up the trim ladder, features like dual-zone climate control system, SofTex trimmed upholstery, heated front seats, optional ventilated front seats, soft-touch dash, etc become a more common sight. The Adventure trim gets an orange accented interior which includes orange stitching on the dash, doors, and seats. The interior of the Adventure trim adds a gist of youth and makes it stand out among other trims.

The 2019 RAV4 offers good headroom across both rows. However, the second row feels cramped owing to lesser legroom as compared to its rivals. The CR-V offers the best legroom across the second row. The RAV4 offers a cargo capacity of 37.6 cu-ft, which is more than adequate to pack your goods, although less than the Nissan Rogue by just 2.3 cu-ft. The Honda CR-V also offers almost the same cargo capacity as that of the Rogue. Some of the standout interior features of the 2019 RAV4 are:

  • LED projector-beam headlights
  • Automatic high beams
  • Power outside mirrors with folding feature
  • Integrated fog lights
  • Rain sensing wipers
  • Integrated fog lights
  • Optional panoramic sunroof

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2019 RAV4 is equipped with an Entune multimedia system. It also gets a 7.0-inch touchscreen display which is bright and glare-free under most conditions. Even with the base trim, you get features like AM/FM, Scout GPS Link, Apple CarPlay, hands-free phone capability, advanced voice recognition, and music streaming via Bluetooth. You also get Wi-Fi support with complementary data.

The bigger 8-inch display is a part of the optional package and is standard on the Adventure and Limited trim. As you climb the trim ladder, you also get support for SiriusXM satellite services, an 8-speaker audio system, dynamic POI search, dynamic voice recognition, etc. For a better musical experience, you can opt for the optional package, which includes a JBL Clari-FI premium audio system with an integrated navigation system. Some of the standout interior features of the 2019 RAV4 are:

  • 7-inch touch-screen/ 8-inch touch-screen display
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Scout GPS Link
  • SiriusXM Radio
  • Advanced voice recognition
  • USB charging ports
  • AM/FM/HD Radio
  • 6/8 speaker audio system

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2019 RAV4 is currently in the fifth generation after its design overhaul. It now looks quite different as compared to its counterparts. The new design looks more aggressive, and the RAV4 gets truck-like aesthetics. The front fascia imbibes the hexagonal grille with the Toyota logo in it, and the inverted trapezoidal headlamps look sleek and grant the front fascia a mean look. The 2019 RAV4 is lower and wider than its predecessor.

The sides look distinct too with raised squarish wheel arches and black cladding on them, making the RAV4 look rugged. The raised shoulder line merges with the rear and gives the RAV4 a proper SUV look. The rear profile gets two sharp-looking wrap-around tail lamps which makes the rear profile look exciting too. Also, the dual exhaust ports add to the sporty appeal of the RAV4.

The 2019 RAV4 is a compact SUV, but the design makes it look bigger than it actually is. The higher ground clearance just adds to its off-road capability, and only the Honda CR-V comes close in that regard. The CR-V and the Rogue look family-oriented and classy, but the RAV4 looks more like a rugged SUV. It is also the lightest in its class, thanks to a new TNGA platform, and is also stiffer than before. Some of the standout exterior features of the 2019 RAV4 are:

  • LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL)
  • LED tail lamps
  • Integrated rear spoiler
  • Active grille shutters
  • Power tilt/slide moonroof with one-touch open/close (XLE and above)
  • Power outside mirrors with folding feature (Standard)
  • Integrated fog lights (XLE and above)
