2022 Volkswagen Golf for sale

The all-new 2022 Volkswagen Golf will hit the market later this year with various expected changes in its design and many features will be made standard. Although, if we believe the rumors, Volkswagen may discontinue the sale of regular Golf models in the American market, although no official statement has come yet from the carmaker. With superb fuel economy, unmatched power, and seamless ride quality, the Golf will rival up with some of the best hatchbacks at its back namely Honda CivicHyundai Veloster, and Toyota Corolla.

Buying Advice

Cars like the Golf are mostly preferred with a manual transmission as the fun-to-drive nature of the car exceeds the automatics, and hence should be the preferred choice. That being said, the automatics from Volkswagen are pretty slick too and can deliver an equally fun experience.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

For this year, the hatchback will get some major refreshments in almost every department. The interior layout will likely get some improvements, and some features like heated steering wheels will be made standard. The body will also go through some changes, and now it will be available with a shorter length. The engine performance will also get a minor buff, but the engine type will remain the same as its predecessor. Some minor cosmetic changes are also expected on the exterior part, which won’t affect the price as much.

Features

As before, one can expect the 2022 Golf to be offered in a single fully loaded trim with the only choice of an option being a manual or an automatic transmission. The redesigned Golf is expected to feature a lot of the new age safety and technology features that we are seeing on modern-day VW Group cars of late.

The details are yet to be disclosed, but we have shared the 2021 Golf trim details below for reference.

What's the expected price and release date of the 2022 Volkswagen Golf?

Although no official information about the 2022 Volkswagen Golf has been released yet, looking at the new spec creates possibilities for a minimum bump in price. It may come with a price tag of around $24,000. We may expect the car to hit the showrooms later in the fourth quarter of this year.

Fuel Economy
6.8/10

The MPG range of this car is good but not the best arguably. It delivers a decent and acceptable mileage in the city and highway as well, but the Honda Civic here remains the king. But when it comes to range, the Golf here stands on par with the Civic, thanks to its big fuel tank. So, we can say that when it comes to miles to gallon output, the Volkswagen Golf does provide healthy mileage in its segment and its competitions also have a somewhat similar range.

The MPG figures of the Golf look decent when compared head-to-head with other competitors in this segment. The Honda Civic undoubtedly seems to be a little better when it comes to providing better efficiency on the highway. The Veloster, on the other hand, is the least efficient of the lot, while the Corolla has a marginally higher fuel consumption than the Civic.

Interior
6.8/10

The interior of the Volkswagen Golf is way more astounding and modern than it actually looks at the exterior. Volkswagen has previously made various cosmetic changes and also simplified the functions by installing touchpads for operation. The dual-color tone perfectly blends with the edges of its layout, which gives it a premium look. The touchscreen display along with the center console has been kept slightly tilted towards the driver’s end for better ergonomics, and the quality of the materials doesn’t look cheap by any means.

The front row has an adequate amount of space that can fit any body type, whereas the rear seating has a big headspace available which is the best in its class. But still, a long journey with 3 adults can be a little hectic on a hatchback. The leather-wrapped steering wheel also comes with mounted buttons and a heating feature, which is again the merit of this car. The ambient lighting in and around the cabin also enriches the overall comfort level and radiates an exciting vibe. Behind the seats, it has a big 17.4 cu-ft of cargo space, which is on par with its segment.

In the front row, the Volkswagen Golf lacks behind all of its competitors, while the Civic has the biggest space to offer in its front-row. But things completely change for the Golf in the rear seating space, where it beats all the other rivals by having much higher headroom. The Honda Civic offers spacious rear and front seats with the biggest trunk as well, while the Corolla is the most cramped one here. Few standout interior features include:

  • 4-way manually adjustable front seats with lumbar support
  • Electric power steering
  • Heated steering wheels
  • Front bucket seats
  • Single-zone automatic climate control

2022 Volkswagen Golf: Infotainment & Connectivity

Looking at the price tag, the Volkswagen Golf has a decent infotainment unit that has multiple ways to keep you entertained on the go. The features include Android Auto & Apple CarPlay connection system, Voice-command features, HD Radio, Bluetooth & Navigation, etc. Apart from that, an 8.0-inch touchscreen display is also available as standard, but you can also opt for a 10.0-inch display. Moreover, you can also choose to add HomeLink by paying $325 more from your pocket. Moreover, this car will have 6 stereo speakers, dual USB ports, memory card slot, AM/FM radio, etc as standard. Some infotainment features of this car are mentioned below:

  • 6 stereo speakers
  • 8.0-inch touchscreen display
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • HomeLink feature
  • Bluetooth & Navigation

Exterior
6.8/10

This car has not been upgraded much in the exterior part in the previous year, so this year some cosmetic changes are very likely but no official facts have been released yet. This car has 16-inch alloy wheels, whereas its other competitors offer 18-inch alloy wheels, which is a downside for the Golf. The 2021 MY Golf has got new Matrix LED lights in the front, which will be retained in the newer model.

The overall exterior profile looks practical and just the way it should be.

When compared, the exterior dimensions of all the cars seem much similar to each other, and every other car has an advantage in some parts. The Hyundai Veloster is the lightest car amongst all, whereas the ground clearance of the Civic & Corolla is better. The Civic also has the longest wheelbase amongst all because of which it provides a good balance of space in its cabin & cargo at the same time. Major exterior highlights of the hatchback are:

  • LED projector-beam headlamps with cornering lights
  • LED tail lights
  • Speed Sensitive Rain Detecting Wipers w/Heated Jets
  • Black Grille w/Chrome Accents
  • Express Open/Close Sliding And Tilting Glass Sunroof w/Sunshade
  • 16-inch Alloy Wheels w/Silver Accents

Safety
8.0/10

In terms of safety, Volkswagen has never compromised, and although the 2022 Golf is yet to be tested, the 2021 Golf is a testament to that. The NHTSA rated the 2021 Golf with a perfect overall rating of 5-stars, while it also scored really well in the tests conducted by the IIHS. There are expected to be many modern safety features on offer with the 2022 Golf, making the hatchback safer for the passengers inside. A highlight of important safety features is listed below:

  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking
  • Blind Spot Monitor
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Back-Up Camera

Final Verdict

Yes, the 2022 Volkswagen Golf does provide a great value, but the price tag with which it comes is a little higher when compared to its rivals. The Hyundai Veloster, on the other hand, provides equal or maybe you can say better features and value at a very affordable rate. The other competitors are also better than the Golf in some segments. So lastly, we would say that it stands out as a good choice in its segment, but you should probably put the other cars on your checklist too.
