2011 BMW X6 Review

The BMW X6 is BMWs take at a crossover between an SUV and a coupe. It is based on the X5 platform and packs the same dynamic chassis and powerful yet efficient engines.

The 2011 BMW X6 drives better than some SUVs and provides more cargo space than many sport sedans, but the BMW missed the sweet spot of practicality and sport the X6 aims for. The X6 neither functions well purely as an SUV or purely as a fun-to-drive vehicle, leading many to wonder what purpose it actually serves.

The unique styling is a love it or leave it affair for most; there won't be many people that are neutral on the X6's looks. That's a definite positive for those in the "love it" camp, it has the power to turn heads and wag tongues, even after several years on the market. From the base six-cylinder to the ferocious M model, the X6 has more than a sprinkling of performance in its DNA. It's still a tall, heavy vehicle, however, ultimately handling and fuel efficiency reflect that.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2011 BMW X6 is a four-seat SUV available in two trim styles that correspond to the engine: xDrive35i and xDrive50i. The term xDrive refers to its standard all-wheel-drive system. Standard equipment on the X6 xDrive35i includes 19-inch wheels, front and rear parking sensors, a power tailgate, a sunroof, automatic and adaptive bi-xenon headlights, fog lights, automatic wipers, cruise control, 10-way power front seats, driver memory functions, leather upholstery, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, the iDrive electronics interface and a 10-speaker sound system with CD player, auxiliary audio jack and HD radio.

Aside from its twin-turbo V8, the xDrive50i adds 14-way "multicontour" front seats, BMW Assist emergency telematics, Bluetooth, and a navigation system with voice controls and real-time traffic. These extra items are available as options on the 35i. The base trim is available with a sticker price of $57,000 while the top end xDrive50i is available for grab at $67,700.

We Recommend

The 2011 BMW X6 has sporty looks and performance. The xDrive35i model comes in with almost all the features as standard, and with the optional packages, one could tailor the SUV to their fit. Hence the base model - xDrive35i is recommended. We would recommend you to opt for packages like Rear Climate package and Premium Sound package for added features and comfort.

Engine and Performance
8.7/10

The 2011 BMW X6 xDrive35i is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 that produces 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. As with the xDrive50i, an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard.

The 2011 BMW X6 xDrive50i gets a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 that cranks out 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. The two gasoline-powered variants use an eight-speed automatic with Steptronic shift capability (via paddles mounted on the steering wheel).

For a better combination of performance and practicality, the 2011 Porsche Cayenne could be tried. But when it comes to performance figures, the BMW X6 triumphs over the Cayenne and also the ZDX. The BMW is the only SUV to have an eight-speed automatic transmission among the compared SUVs. The X6 surely has the upper hand in this comparison.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

BMW hasn't sloughed off its environmental responsibilities with its bigger, stronger-performing X6. The X6's quite efficient for its class, with nearly the base model earning excellent EPA combined ratings of 19 miles per gallon. The base X6 has the highest ratings of the lineup. When its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 is paired with the automatic eight-speed transmission, it's rated at 13 mpg city, 18 highway, according to the automaker. They're figures some automakers would say as their "worst" numbers.

In light of the comparison made above, the BMW X6 and Acura ZDX have identical mpg figures when it comes to city, highway, and also combined - 16/23/19. The Porsche, however, falls back with just 1 point, with recorded mpg figures of 16 in the city, 22 on highways, and 18 combined. The fuel capacity is more for the Porsche, this makes the SUV not fall too far behind the other SUVs in range.

Interior
7.9/10

From the front seats, the BMW X6 is nearly identical to the X5 upon which it is based, though sportier seats and cushioned center console sides (to help protect knees during aggressive cornering) are unique to the X6. In BMW fashion, materials are top-notch, and the whole thing is put together beautifully.

The big changes happen behind the front seats, mostly due to the sloping roofline that reduces rear headroom by about 2 inches. The rear seat is also only capable of accommodating two passengers since the large rear center console is not removable. The rear seats are reasonably comfortable, but they lack any sort of adjustment. The dramatic roof line also cuts into the cargo area.

If you’re familiar with BMW vehicles, you’ll find yourself at home in the X6. The seating position is good and fairly sporty for an SUV, and the cabin is intimate and cockpit-like, impressive for a vehicle this size. Cargo capacity is sufficient for occasional hauling, with a decent 25 cubic feet with the seats up, but with the rear seats stowed, the X6 holds around 60 cubic feet (compared to the X5's 75 cubes). That's less capacity than what you'll get out of a Porsche Cayenne. Major interior features include-

  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Heated Front Seats
  • Adjustable steering wheel column
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Steering Wheel Controls

2011 BMW X6 SUV Infotainment System

The iDrive information interface is standard, enabling users access to all dash-mounted functions such as audio and climate control and vehicle communication systems, as well as satellite navigation, if the vehicle is equipped with that option.

Audio, climate, and navigation systems are all handled through BMW's capable but often criticized iDrive system, which had some rough patches in its infancy, but has matured in its latest iteration into a more user-friendly--if still complex--infotainment system. Few key features include-

  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • CD Player
  • HD Radio
  • MP3 Player
  • Satellite Radio
  • Premium Sound System
  • Entertainment System
  • Navigation System
  • Onboard Hands-Free Communications System
  • Wireless Cell Phone Hookup

Exterior
7.0/10

It has been called an oddball, an outcast, and a bender of genres, but whatever you call the BMW X6, which has elements of a coupe, sedan, SUV, and sports car running through its hoses, you'll find it fits a niche you didn't know was there. As such, it competes with a wide range of vehicles, from the Land Rover Range Rover to the Acura ZDX and the Porsche Cayenne.

BMW set out to create a Sports Activity Vehicle with the sexy, sporty coupe roofline and largely succeeded in that endeavor. From the front, it is every bit a sports SUV crossover, while the roofline that plunges toward the rear has a somewhat bulbous rear end, and undeniable BMW design elements like the forward kidney grilles and slightly upswept rear gate makes the X6 look like virtually nothing else on the road.

The overall effect of the half-sport-coupe, half-SUV X6 is divisive: some find it macho, manly, and bold, while others find it too much of too many things to be attractive at all. There isn't much grey area. When you compare the BMW with the likes of Porsche and the Acura, the BMW has a much larger wheelbase and is way lot heavier than the other SUVs it has a rivalry with. Major exterior highlights of the SUV are-

  • Aluminum wheels
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Fog Lamps
  • Auto-Off Headlights
  • Reverse camera
  • Sunroof/moonroof

Safety
9.5/10

The X6 comes with a host of standard safety equipment, including a full complement of front, side, and curtain airbags, plus a range of stability and performance-tuned traction control. Optional upgrades like backup cameras and adaptive cruise control add to the protection. BMW stability control takes advantage of the 2011 X6's four-wheel-drive system through Dynamic Performance Control. The ability to send power to individual wheels lets the BMW X6 have a more direct impact on safety than stability control alone can. Few standout safety features available with the X6 are-

  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Child Safety Locks
  • Rollover Protection System
  • Traction Control
  • Auto-Leveling Headlights
  • Lane Departure Warning (Optional)
  • Fully Equipped Airbags

Final Verdict

We have a sneaking suspicion that practicality won't matter to someone who purchases the 2011 BMW X6. What will matter is that it looks the way it does and that it's a BMW. The former is a matter of taste and the latter speaks to the brand's enduring quality, engineering excellence, and desirability. So in that way, maybe the X6 makes some semblance of sense after all.
