Down just three years ahead of its launch, the Buick Enclave is already becoming the topic of discussion among many family car buyers. However, its dimensions and the tall-body stance make it look more like an SUV rather than an elongated hatchback. For 2011, Buick has only two newbies for the Enclave, including a new set of 9-spoke 19” alloy wheels and two new paint options. Apart from that, the vehicle will continue to offer the same powertrain and styling elements, which according to Buick, are yet to run their course.

Personally, we would prefer opting for the CX AWD variant, primarily because it adds an immense amount of features and specs not available in many of the casual competitors, including the GMC Acadia. The CX trim also be equipped with the Bose stereo, back-up camera, and rear parking sensors as options at a very nominal cost, thus completing the bucket list.

2011 Buick Enclave Review

Pros

  • Tons of standard features
  • Lots of interior space
  • Good safety scores

Cons

  • Laden driving feel
  • Hesitant transmission
  • Disappointing fuel economy

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

Buick offers this highly versatile people carrier in three trim levels, viz: CX, CXL1, and CXL2 trim levels. All have a standard seven-passenger seating configuration via second-row captain's chairs and a third-row bench seat. An optional second-row bench seat, available at no extra charge, increases capacity to eight. Even the base CX is nicely equipped out of the box with 19-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, fog lamps, a power liftgate, heated outside mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and cloth upholstery. This ensures that no buyer of the Enclave goes out empty-handed with a simple cabin on wheels.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

Under the hood, the 3.6-liter direct-injection V-6 engine makes 288 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, burning regular gasoline. It's mated to the Hydra-Matic 6T75 electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission that features automatic grade braking, shift stabilization, and precise shift control.

Although the Enclave won't wow with 0-60 numbers, real-world acceleration is good—impressively, 90 percent of the engine's peak torque is available from 2,500 rpm to more than 6,000 rpm. However, on the highway, the transmission can sometimes be caught hunting for the right gear, and in the process, jostling its occupants. That might be because the transmission has wide ratios and is designed to compromise between performance and fuel economy.

Based on the circumstances, it is possible to alter the power and handling, thanks to the two driving modes available on the Enclave. However, most men would find no difference instantly, but as you drive through the busy streets, the change is perceivable. Meanwhile, though a bit lackluster, the engine grunts enough to clear the 60 MPH barrier in just 7.4 seconds, only 0.2 seconds higher than the arch-rival GMC Acadia. Meanwhile, the Enclave proves superior in exhibiting the top speed of 130 MPH as opposed to the 115 MPH of the latter

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The fuel consumption rate has but a negligible effect as there is no change in the powertrain, or even the design of the Enclave this year. Accordingly, EPA fuel economy estimates stand at 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined for front-wheel-drive models, while all-wheel-drive versions rate 16/22/18. With the optional trailering package, the Enclave can tow up to 4,500 pounds. This might, however, affect the fuel consumption as there is more equipment at bay, but again, the effect is hardly noticeable.

The 2011 GMC Acadia comes to ties with the Enclave here, thus giving a contest full of excitement and climax. Both the vehicles stand on the same platform, as the parent companies manufacturing these vehicles coincide. On the other hand, the much foreign Toyota Highlander travels a little further, especially in cities with its highly refined powertrain, and so does the Lexus RX 350.

Interior
8.4/10

Throughout, the 2011 Buick Enclave has impressive interior space. A standard third row and overall space for up to 7 or 8 people (depending on the configuration) make the Enclave a reasonable minivan substitute. The third row's a real third row too and not just designed for small children with nonexistent legs. The second-row chairs sit a bit higher than in most other large crossovers; you get a good view out, and the position is comfortable for adults.

Interior materials and trims in the Enclave are quite good overall, though some of the dull plastic on the instrument panel feels a bit out of place in a vehicle that can cost nearly $50k. Standard features include tri-zone climate control, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and a power liftgate.

The Enclave's back seats fold down to a completely flat cargo floor, allowing a minivan-like space behind the second row which is good enough for just about any purchase from big-box stores, and the second toe tilts forward for even more space. Storage is also plentiful, with over 23 cubic feet of space behind the third row when the cargo management system is removed, and if you fold down the second and third rows, you'll free up over 115 cubic feet of cargo space. Major interior features include-

  • Standard bucket seats in the first and second rows
  • Three-passenger third-row bench
  • Optional three-passenger second-row bench seat
  • Optional heated and cooled seats for the driver, front passenger

2011 Buick Enclave Infotainment:

The Enclave's cabin has an upscale vibe, thanks to its stylish dash and wood-grain inlays. There's chrome trim everywhere, which means blinding reflections when the sun is at certain angles. Two other downsides include small and indistinct buttons for the audio and climate controls and outward visibility that's more compromised than that of competing vehicles.

The 2011 Buick Enclave can be ordered with a number of features, such as a ten-speaker Bose surround-sound stereo, three-zone climate control, a power rear liftgate, a head-up display (HUD), GPS, a two-panel sunroof, and a backseat DVD entertainment system. However, most of these features are limited to the top-end trim. Few key features include-

  • Adjustable Speed-Sensitive Volume Control
  • 3 Months Of Provided Satellite Radio Service
  • Optional navigation system and Bose 10-speaker stereo
  • Radio Data System
  • Auxiliary Audio Input

Exterior
8.5/10

As one of the few vehicles to make it from concept to production without having its exterior styling diluted, the 2011 Buick Enclave offers a bolder appearance than many crossover SUVs. While large enough to accommodate eight passengers, the Enclave’s artful body lines give it the look of a much smaller vehicle.

The face of the Enclave features a "waterfall" grille, modern-looking portholes above the fenders, and intricately detailed almond-shaped headlamps. Adding some flash to its svelte body are standard 18-inch wheels, chrome-tipped dual exhaust outlets, and chrome roof rails.

Although its design is now four years old, the 2011 Buick Enclave still looks classy and contemporary, with curvaceous fenders and glamorous detailing. Another styling detail you either love or hate is the chromed ports alongside the hood; it's a cue from Buick's heritage, but it can be seen as either classy or tacky. Dimensionally, the Enclave is about an inch longer than the Acadia. Major exterior features of the crossover SUV are-

  • Sculpted ellipsoid headlights
  • Waterfall grille and louvered gills
  • Standard 19-inch aluminum wheels; 20-inch chrome-clad wheels optional
  • Dual exhaust

Safety
9.3/10

Stability control, front-seat side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags are standard on every 2011 Buick Enclave. In brake testing, the Enclave came to a stop from 60 mph in 139 feet. This is a somewhat long stopping distance for this segment, and both the Ford Flex and Mazda CX-9 perform better. In the government's new, more strenuous crash testing for 2011, the Enclave earned a top five-star rating for overall performance, with four out of five stars given for front-impact protection and five stars for side-impact protection. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the Enclave earned the best score of "Good" in frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests. Important safety features available are-

  • Four-wheel-disc anti lock brakes
  • Electronic stability system with rollover mitigation technology
  • Six standard airbags, including side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain airbags for all three rows
  • During a rollover, side curtain airbags stay inflated for several moments to provide additional protection

Final Verdict

Overall, the 2011 Buick Enclave proves its mettle on all the grounds. It has a powerful engine, it handles like a pro, it is highly versatile and practical, plus it is marvelously luxurious. It is a perfect example of a feature-laden family car, the one you can trust with your eyes closed, thanks to Buick, a brand that has been making mobility in America safe and sound for many decades. Even though the SUV has its own shortcomings in terms of fuel economy or some driving blind spot concerns, there are hardly any reasons that would make it the wrong candidate.
