Overview

The 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe continues much as before, and that, no doubt, is just fine. A sizable number of folks have grown to appreciate its mix of truck toughness and surprisingly refined practicality. Like the Chevrolet Suburban to which it's related, the Tahoe is a do-anything, go-anywhere sport-utility vehicle.

Its truck-based architecture and strong V8 engine allow it to tow heavy loads, and the available four-wheel-drive system can take you off-road or through the snow. These aren't necessarily activities that are undertaken every day, but only a vehicle with big-truck capability can deliver when the time comes. And yet when it comes to everyday use, the Tahoe's relatively comfortable ride and its well-executed cabin with three rows of seats make it a practical choice. In the era of the crossover, few vehicles offer such a combination.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe is available in three trim levels: LS, LT, and LTZ. The base Tahoe LS comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, tri-zone manual climate control, eight-passenger seating with front power-adjustable bucket seats and center floor console, a 60/40-split second-row seat, and 50/50-split removable third-row seat.

Also standard are Bluetooth, OnStar, and a six-speaker audio system with CD and rear audio controls, satellite radio, an auxiliary input jack, and an iPod/USB interface. An optional Convenience package includes power-adjustable pedals, remote engine start, rear parking assist, and a rearview camera system with mirror display. A front split-bench seat may be substituted to enable nine-passenger seating. 4WD models include a single-speed transfer case. LT models include the most available LS equipment plus front fog lamps, a locking rear differential, tri-zone automatic climate control, eight-passenger leather-trimmed seating, and nine-speaker Bose audio.

LTZ-trimmed Tahoes include the LT Luxury package content with seven-passenger seating as standard equipment, and add 20-inch wheels, a suspension system with active damping, outside mirrors with integrated turn signals and ground-illuminating lights, perforated leather-trimmed seating with more adjustments, heated and ventilated front seats, power flip-and-fold second-row seats, a navigation system with real-time traffic, and a 10-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system. A second-row split-bench seat can be substituted for eight-passenger seating. 4WD models include a two-speed transfer case.

We Recommend

The 2011 Chevy Tahoe is a leading choice for a traditional large SUV, thanks to its comfortable cabin and ability to haul and tow. The base trim has quite an elaborate list of standard features that we would like to recommend. So the recommended trim model would be the LS, however, the selection of trims is a matter of personal preference and what you expect from the SUV.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

Most 2011 Chevy Tahoe models are powered by a 320-horsepower 5.3-liter V-8 which is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, a seamless duo that provides steady and smooth acceleration with a hint of muscle car sound. The engine sports variable valve timing and E85 flexible-fuel capability, along with cylinder deactivation, which cuts power to half the cylinders in low-engine-load scenarios.

All Tahoe models are built on GM's full-size SUV platform, with a fully boxed frame, coil-over-shock front suspension, and rack-and-pinion steering. At its best, the Tahoe is as responsive as any 5,600-pound vehicle can be and feels much more maneuverable than it should. It's more maneuverable than it might suggest, and it holds the road fairly well, considering it is a tall, heavy vehicle with a solid rear axle.

The 5.3-liter V8 with Active Fuel Management puts its 320 horsepower right at your command thanks to a wide torque curve, and you never notice when the engine switches between eight- and four-cylinder operation. By using this technical wizardry, the two-wheel-drive version of the Tahoe achieves a great deal of fuel efficiency. Performance criteria is recorded almost similar for all the SUVs here, being a huge vehicle their drag speeds are quite slow.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The standard Tahoe and Suburban models are significantly better on gas than other models in this class. For instance, the Ford Expedition gets just 14/20, while the equivalent Tahoe gets 15/21. All standard Tahoe models are also E85 (85-percent ethanol) compatible, but when you fuel up with ethanol, you'll get an EPA-estimated 11 mpg city, 16 highway.

In the comparison made here, the Chevy and the GMC both are having identical figures in city, highway, and combined mpg, which is 15 in the city, 21 on the highway, and 17 combined. The Ford, however, just falls short by 1 mpg, but it has the upper hand when it comes to the fuel capacity.

Interior
8.2/10

The Chevrolet Tahoe's cabin is one of its strengths, with an attractive design and high-quality fit and finish. The layout of its controls is straightforward and their operation intuitive. The front seats are comfortable, though the lack of a telescoping steering wheel might be a drawback for some drivers.

Interior materials and trims don't quite have the high-end feel and gloss of those used in GM's Cadillac products, but they're among the best for the segment. Also, the Tahoe's interior is well isolated from road and wind noise.

One of the Tahoe's advantages over its competition is the ability to accommodate nine occupants with the LS's available front split-bench seat. However, the Tahoe lacks a convenient flat-foldaway third-row seat; the rear seats are heavy, awkward to remove, and must be stored elsewhere. Once the seats are out, there are 109 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The only SUV without a seating capacity of 9 is the Expedition with a space for five. Major interior features include-

  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Heated Front and Rear Seats
  • Adjustable steering wheel column
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Heated Mirrors
  • Steering Wheel Controls

2011 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV Infotainment System

The 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe has definitely moved up a notch or two when it comes to interior refinement and luxury, for a vehicle that can cost $40,000 or more. The infotainment system of Tahoe is also quite intriguing. Standard equipment includes Bluetooth and USB connectivity, tri-zone climate control, and GM’s OnStar telematics system. Available features include a rearview camera and a touch-screen navigation system. The instrument panel with LED backlighting is fit for a luxury class. Few key features include-

  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • CD Player
  • MP3 Player
  • Rear Seat Audio Controls
  • Satellite Radio
  • Navigation from Telematics
  • Onboard Hands-Free Communications System
  • Wireless Cell Phone Hookup

Exterior
7.0/10

The 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe carries over styling that's now several years old, but even if it's not the freshest face among full-size utes, it's well-sculpted and not too overwrought. The face of the Chevrolet Tahoe is its most distinctive exterior feature.

The design features a twin-port horizontal grille with a bold Chevrolet “bow tie” in the center. The flared fenders, power bulge on the hood, and large wheels and tires (up to 20 inches in diameter) speak to an understated but substantial presence on the road.

There are subtle flares at the fenders, and the tailgate is simply shaped, with a minimum of cutlines and fuss. Even though the Tahoe is wide (79 inches), it is still easy to handle and park. As with the other subsections, the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon share identical figures here as well. Ford with a longer wheelbase than its rivals, is the tallest of them all. Major exterior highlights of the SUV include-

  • Aluminum wheels
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Fog Lamps
  • Auto-Off Headlights
  • Reverse camera
  • Sunroof/moonroof

Safety
8.3/10

The 2011 Chevy Tahoe comes standard with antilock brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, and OnStar emergency telematics. Rear parking sensors and a rearview camera are available on every Tahoe, while the Tahoe LTZ can be had with a blind-spot warning system. The Tahoe hasn't been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, but in the federal government's new, more stringent crash tests for 2011, the Tahoe gets top five star scores in both frontal and side-impact—with an overall score of four only because it's such a tall vehicle and thus more rollover-prone. The Tahoe also achieves a top five-star score in the new NHTSA side pole test, which isn't yet figured into the overall score. Few standout safety features of the SUV are-

  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Integrated Turn Signal Mirrors (Optional)
  • Adjustable Pedals (Optional)
  • Traction Control
  • Fully Equipped Airbags

Final Verdict

The 2011 Chevy Tahoe is a leading choice for a traditional large SUV, thanks to its comfortable cabin and ability to haul and tow. With one of the best fuel economy ratings in the class and good handling for such a large vehicle, the Tahoe is a good choice for anyone looking for an affordable large SUV. But for pure passenger use, a large crossover SUV might work out better.
