The 2011 Mazda CX-9 comes equipped with a 3.7 L V6 engine that puts out a maximum power of 273 hp and a maximum torque of 270 lb-ft. The engine's power is transferred to the wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Hyundai Santa Fe comes in at second place with a greater power output of 276 hp and 248 lb-ft but falls at second place in acceleration taking 7.4 and 15.7 seconds to reach 60mph and cross the quarter-mile respectively. The Mazda CX-9 producing 273 hp and 270 lb-ft, is the second most powerful among the competition but produces the most torque. However, it takes 7.3 seconds to reach 60mph and 15.6 seconds to cross the quarter-mile.

The CX-9 performs quite well in terms of fuel efficiency considering it has a third row and extra heft. The 2011 Mazda CX-9 delivers a fuel-efficiency of 17 mpg in the city, 24 on the highway, and 19 mpg of combined fuel economy. The Mazda CX-9 gets a 20.1-gallon fuel capacity outputting a range of 342 miles in the city, 482 on the highway, and a combined range of 381 miles. The efficiency figures are better than other vehicles in the segment.

The Santa Fe delivers a combined fuel efficiency of 23 mpg followed by the Murano delivering 20 mpg. The CX-7 has the least efficiency figures of 17 mpg in the city, 24 on the highway, and 19 combined. The Mazda and the Nissan Murano have fuel capacities of 20.1 and 21.7 gallons followed by the Santa Fe with 18-gallons of fuel capacity. The Nissan Murano delivers the best-combined range of 434 miles followed by the Santa Fe and the Mazda providing 414 and 381 miles of range respectively.

The 2011 Mazda CX-9 offers seating for seven people. The interior features an upscale cabin and leather and cloth seating surfaces along with wood and chrome trim elements. Two-tone leather treatment and red-and-blue lighting for the instruments make the interior look sporty.

Comfort in the first and second rows is excellent. The third row is best left for children. The seats are heated and leather-trimmed. Three-zone climate control is also present to keep the passengers comfortable. 

The Nissan Murano is the most spacious option in the front row, followed by the Hyundai Santa Fe and the CX-9. When it comes to second-row space, the competition is all on par with each other. When it comes to cargo capacity, the Hyundai Santa Fe has the most of 34.2 cu-ft followed by the Nissan with 31.6 and the Mazda with 17.2 cu-ft of cargo area respectively.

How intuitive is the 2011 Mazda CX-9’s infotainment unit?

The 2011 Mazda CX-9 features an AM/FM/CD stereo system. It is equipped with Bluetooth, Aux, and USB Connectivity along with satellite radio.

As for audio, there is a 6 speaker audio system from inside the Mazda CX-9 as standard in the lower trims while the higher trims come with a Bose Premium Centerpoint Surround System with 10 speakers. The audio system sounds really good.

The Mazda CX-9 looks quite numb and not very stylish. The exterior features a small front grill along with HID Xenon headlights making it look sporty. The side profile features 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels further uplifting the sporty nature.

The rear end is just vague and looks a bit bulgy making it kind of ugly look. The CX-9 has a weight of 4330 lbs and a wheelbase 113.2 inches long.

The new Mazda CX-9 weighs 4330 lbs followed by the Murano that weighs 3877 lbs while the Santa Fe is the lightest weighing 3875 lbs by a slight margin. The Santa Fe has the best ground clearance of 8.1 inches while the Mazda has 8.0 inches of clearance and the Nissan has a lower 7.4 inches. The new Mazda CX-9 comes equipped with many standard safety features including, advanced dual front airbags with driver’s seat-position and passenger-weight sensors along with Dynamic Stability Control and Traction Control Systems. NHTSA has not yet rated the Mazda yet. IIHS gives the CX-9 a ‘Poor’ rating for frontal protection making it very shameful for Mazda. The Mazda CX-9 cannot be considered a safe vehicle just because of this reason.
