Overall Rating
Although the Mini Cooper is applauded for its compact dimensions, agile handling, and precise steering alongside its peppy engine, one complaint that everyone has had is the lack of interior space and that is exactly what the Mini promises to do with the 2011 Mini Cooper Clubman.

The Clubman is offered only in a single trim and gets only a single powertrain option as well. It comes pretty loaded with features like satellite radio, various safety equipment, leather interior upholstery, and nifty features like the ambient lighting that enhances the overall experience inside the cabin.

The Cooper Clubman gets the same 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that is found on the base Mini Cooper. It also produces the same 121 hp and 114 lb-ft of torque while the engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard.
The power is sent to the front wheels only and the 0-60 mph sprint takes just 8.1 seconds. The quarter-mile is covered in a decent enough 16.4 seconds while the top speed is electronically limited to 122 mph.

The Mini Cooper Clubman being from a premium brand is more expensive than the Hyundai Elantra Touring and the Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen. The Jetta SportWagon has the highest engine output while the Clubman lacks any significant power output, but in real-world conditions, the Mini is the fastest with Volkswagen behind it at second, while the Elantra Touring is the slowest of the lot.
The Mini engines are known for their fuel-efficient nature and the 1.6-liter unit under the hood of the Clubman is pretty frugal as well. The EPA rates it for 28 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, while the city and highway combined fuel economy is rated for 31 mpg. The 13.2-gallon gas tank is on the smaller side for the car, but considering the small dimensions, it still is fairly sized, which together with the fuel efficiency returns a 400 mile combined driving range.

Both the Elantra and Volkswagen Jetta wagons have similar fuel-efficiency ratings and also employ similarly sized fuel tanks and hence have a similar driving range. The Cooper Clubman on the other hand has much lower fuel consumption and despite making use of a smaller fuel tank, has a better driving range than the other two.
The biggest advantage of getting a Clubman over any other Mini is in the backseat of the car. If you have been in any regular Mini, the lack of space at the rear makes it next to impossible for an adult to sit at the back.
But with the extended wheelbase of the Clubman, it can now fit average-sized adults with relative comfort. Opening the split doors at the back, the Mini offers a 9.2 cu-ft of luggage space which can be extended to 32.8 cu-ft when the rear seat is folded.Â

The Hyundai Elantra offers the most spacious cabin as it has superior headroom, front and rear legroom, and decent-sized boot, which is much larger than the Clubman. The Jetta Sportwagen on the other hand also has a superior cabin space than the Clubman, which makes the Clubman still the most compact of them all.Â
The infotainment setup on offer with the Clubman also has retro-inspired controls which still feature a round console at the center which displays all the information and also features lighting to make it look more quirky. The 6-speaker audio system is decent but one can opt for a much better setup with the options package.Â
The Mini Clubman looks almost identical from the front to any other Minis, but the rear side shows its extended wheelbase whereas the twin rear trunk doors make loading and unloading things much easier.
The two-tone paint scheme particularly looks sporty and continues with the trend of offering sporty shades. The front hood scoop and the black roof rails also make for a sporty and outdoorsy look for the car.

The new Mini Clubman though is considerably larger than any other Mini, it is still way shorter than the other two but the difference between the three in terms of ground clearance is not much different. The Jetta Sportwagen is the heaviest of the lot while Clubman is obviously the lightest of them all.
Although the Minis have been very famous and have a low price tag, the sales charts do not see large volumes. And that’s probably why the Clubman has not yet been tested by either the NHTSA or the IIHS crash testing agencies. The substantially long list of standard and options feature list is pretty extensive and if safety is your priority, the Clubman gets you covered.
The Mini Cooper Clubman is a very potent little machine that not only is fun to drive and has great performance, the cabin space is also pretty usable for adults. The lack of safety test scores might concern a few, but the extensive feature list is enough to calm all the doubt arising in the minds of the buyers.
