The Mitsubishi Outlander is powered by a 2.4liter inline-4 motor. The motor pushes out a maximum of 168 horsepower and 167lb-ft of maximum torque. The power figures might sound okay but in reality, it is barely adequate for the SUV.

Within city limits, you are less likely to feel the need for more power, but once you hit the highways, the motor starts to struggle and under a full load there’s no way you can pass slow-moving traffic ahead of you effortlessly.

The Mazda CX-7 is the most underpowered SUV on the list while the Forester offers strong performance and excellent practicality with its standard AWD system.

The basic 2.4liter motor of the Mitsubishi Outlander might be quite underpowered but it offers a decent fuel economy and poses as an ideal city car. The motor returns a maximum city mileage of 23mpg and a 28mpg of highway mileage. The combined rating stands at 25mpg.

The Mazda CX-7 disappoints in the fuel economy aspect too after its performance while the Subaru Forester offers some decent mileage considering its power output figures.

The overall design of the Outlander’s interior is quite attractive as one might expect from a Japanese carmaker. The XLS and the GT models feature premium-quality soft-touch materials on the dashboard and doors with attractive double-stitching accents.

The tilt-only function of the steering wheel is convenient but the telescopic adjustment would’ve been great. The front bucket seats are quite comfortable and supportive for long trips while the rear seats are decently comfortable too with which can be folded to increase the cargo capacity.

The Mazda CX-7 is quite more spacious than the Outlander both on paper and real-life with an excellent roomy cabin and a comfortable interior. The Subaru Forester also offers decent interior dimensions and build quality going toe-to-toe with the rivals on the list.

Infotainment

The infotainment aspect of the Mitsubishi Outlander remains pretty basic with a handful of features as standard to keep you entertained throughout your journey. The standard features include a CD-Player, MP3 Player, and AM/FM. Some optional features include a 40-gigabyte hard-drive-based navigation system with real-time traffic info.

The Outlander also comes with a color-keyed front and rear bumper. The Mitsubishi Outlander weighs 3472 lbs, which is pretty light for the segment. The Outlander is quite long and features an impressive ground clearance of 8.5 inches.

The Mazda CX-7 is the most compact SUV on the list but features the same amount of ground clearance as the Outlander. The Subaru Forester comes with even better ground clearance and combined with its fantastic AWD drivetrain it offers the best practicality on the list here.

Safety has always been almost all Japanese car manufacturers’ top priorities and the Mitsubishi Outlander also comes with all the basic safety aids onboard. The IIHS rated it a best possible “Good” rating but the NHTSA didn’t yet test it for its crashworthiness. The SUV comes with some standard features such as Whiplash-reducing front head restraints, front-seat side airbags, and full-length curtain airbags.

To sum it up, the Outlander poses as an excellent alternative to its rivals however it lacks in the performance aspect in its basic form.
