About 2011 Nissan Maxima

3.9

Overall Rating

2011 Nissan Maxima competes with some of the equally capable vehicles in the segment like the Honda Accord and Mazda 6.

The 2011 Nissan Maxima sees no major changes in this year's model. It still houses the powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine that provides great overall performance while being quick on acceleration. It does lack a bit on the fuel economy when compared to some of its rivals. The interior is spacious and provides great comfort to all the passengers. Available at a starting price of $31,750, the top-line SV trim can go up to $34,000. Thus the 2011 Nissan Maxima competes with some of the equally capable vehicles in the segment like the Honda Accord and Mazda 6.

Both the trims available with the 2011 Nissan Maxima house a similar 3.5-liter V6 engine and thus provide similar performance. But the SV trim adds multiple features above the S trim that proves to be very valuable for the in-cabin experience. Thus with an additional $2,000, the SV provides a better value for the money spent.

2011 Nissan Maxima Review

Pros

  • Powerful V6 engine
  • Precise steering
  • High-quality interior

Cons

  • Expensive optional packages
  • Limited passenger volume

2011 Nissan Maxima competes with some of the equally capable vehicles in the segment like the Honda Accord and Mazda 6.

Overview

The 2011 Nissan Maxima sees no major changes in this year's model. It still houses the powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine that provides great overall performance while being quick on acceleration. It does lack a bit on the fuel economy when compared to some of its rivals. The interior is spacious and provides great comfort to all the passengers. Available at a starting price of $31,750, the top-line SV trim can go up to $34,000. Thus the 2011 Nissan Maxima competes with some of the equally capable vehicles in the segment like the Honda Accord and Mazda 6.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The 2011 Nissan Maxima is available in two trim options, namely S and SV. The base S trim is available at a price of $31,750. It gets multiple standard features that provide a rich experience in the interior like dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, automatic headlamps, and a sunroof. The SV trim is available at a price of around $34,000 that adds multiple features onto the base S trim like the integrated turn signals, power driver seat, leather upholstery, and a much better 9 speaker Bose stereo system.

Engine and Performance
8.4/10

The 2011 Nissan Maxima is available in a single engine option of 3.5-liter V6. The engine generates 290 HP along with 261 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated with the continuously variable automatic transmission that delivers the power to the front wheels as standard.

This engine setup provides a quick acceleration of 5.8 seconds to reach the 60 MPH mark from a standstill, while to cover the quarter-mile distance, the Nissan Maxima takes 14.2 seconds. The Maxima also has a much higher top speed of 147 mph as compared to its rivals.

The Mazda has a slightly bigger 3.7-liter engine while the Honda Accord has a similar setup of 3.5-liter V6 as that of the Nissan Maxima. Even with a bigger engine set up, the Honda Accord beats the Mazda on 0 to 60 MPH acceleration with 6.1 seconds, while the Mazda takes 7.4 seconds.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The high-powered 3.5-liter V6 engine provides a decent fuel economy in the 2011 Nissan Maxima. The Maxima provides a mileage of 19 MPG in the city, which improves to 26 MPG on the highway. Thus we get a combined mileage of 22 MPG from the 2011 Nissan Maxima. Along with that, it is equipped with 20 gallons of fuel tank capacity, which is the largest in comparison and provides a maximum range of 520 miles.

The Honda Accord is the most fuel-efficient vehicle in this comparison with the combined mileage of 26mpg, while the Mazda provides the lowest fuel economy with a combined mileage of 21 MPG. Both Honda and Mazda have a similar fuel tank capacity of 18.5 gallons, but with the much higher fuel economy, the Honda Accord provides a much better range.

Interior
8.2/10

The 2011 Nissan Maxima provides considerable spacing for all the passengers inside the cabin. The front row gets a decent amount of headroom and shoulder room for the driver as well as the co-passenger, while the rear row proves to be a bit cramped due to the sloping roofline that cuts down on the headroom for the passengers.

The Nissan Maxima can accommodate up to five passengers inside its cabin while providing great comfort for all the passengers. The front seats are well-bolstered that provide great support and thus capable of taking you on a long drive comfortably. The Maxima provides a cargo capacity of 14.2 cubic feet, which is not much but decent for this segment.

All the vehicles in this comparison can accommodate up to five passengers, while the Honda Accord provides much better spacing in the front row. The Mazda 6 has a maximum cargo capacity of 16.6 cubic feet, which is much better than what Honda and Nissan offer in this segment. Here is a list of the interior features that we get with the 2011 Nissan Maxima:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Tilt-and-telescoping steering column
  • Eight-way driver and four-way passenger power front seats
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Cloth/leather upholstery

How is the 2011 Nissan Maxima’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system of the 2011 Nissan Maxima does not offer most of the features as standard. What we get is Bluetooth connectivity, a 6-disc CD changer, and an auxiliary audio jack as standard. The top trim adds in a 9-speaker Bose stereo system along with satellite radio. But there is an option to opt for multiple packages like the Premium package, Technology package, and a Monitor package that adds in a 7-inch LCD screen along with a voice-activated navigation system, real-time traffic, DVD player, USB ports, and digital music storage. Here is a list of all the infotainment system features that are available with the 2011 Nissan Maxima:

  • Bluetooth connectivity, 6-disc CD changer
  • 9-speaker Bose stereo system
  • 7-inch LCD screen
  • Voice-activated navigation system
  • Real-time traffic
  • DVD player
  • USB ports
  • Digital music storage

Exterior
8.5/10

The exterior design of the 2011 Nissan Maxima is state-of-the-art and is named liquid motion by the company. This is due to the wave-like flow right from the front hood to the rear deck lid. The L-shape headlights along with the moon roof and optional bigger 19-inch wheels provide a menacing stand for the Nissan Maxima. It has a curb weight of 3,540 lbs.

It is not the longest in comparison with the length of 191 inches and has a shorter wheelbase of 109 inches. The Nissan Maxima provides a ground clearance of 6 inches, which is decent enough to travel over the off-roads.

Here is a list of the exterior features that are available with the 2011 Nissan Maxima:

Safety
8.9/10

The NHTSA has not yet tested the 2011 Nissan Maxima. The IIHS has given it an “Acceptable” rating in most of the test segments like the roof strength and small overlap front driver-side test. Thus the Nissan Maxima is not the safest vehicle out there. But the addition of a few safety features does improve the safety factor of the vehicle. Here is a list of all the safety features that are available with the 2011 Nissan Maxima:

  • Anti-lock braking system
  • Stability control
  • Traction control
  • Front-seat side airbags
  • Side curtain airbags
  • Front active head restraints
  • Rearview camera.

Final Verdict

The 2011 Nissan Maxima is equipped with a massive 3.5-liter V6 engine that provides great overall performance. It is quick in acceleration, but the higher-capacity engine does lack fuel economy when compared to some of its rivals. The exterior design is impeccable and is the most modern look provided by Nissan. The interior provides considerable spacing for all the passengers while accommodating up to five passengers inside the cabin. But the Nissan Maxima disappoints in terms of the safety ratings. So even if the package provided by the Nissan accommodates decent features, the lack of safety ratings prevents us from recommending this vehicle in this segment.
