Overall Rating
The Scion xD, the four-door hatchback comes in two trims and one engine option. Scion xD is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. The Scion xD has the peppiest engine in the segment and is quick in 0-60 mph runs too but all this comes at the expense of fuel economy which is average for its class.
The Scion xD is an economical hatchback by the brand, which impresses with its stunning feature list. Starting at an MSRP of $15,190, it promises nothing less than excellent value for money when you look at how well loaded the car is. It is powered by a 1.8 L engine that produces 128 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission.
We recommend opting for the Base trim as it is very much packed with features. The Special Edition does not have a lot of features that make it truly special given its price over the Base Edition. Also, add to the fact that Scion offers a lot of customization with the optional extras. Owners can pick these options according to their use and have a car fully adjusted to their convenience. These include 40 dealer-installed accessories, and on top of that, hundreds of aftermarket parts. These include performance parts too from Toyota’s TRD parts bin such as quick-shifter kits, larger brakes, shorter springs, performance exhaust systems, and so on.

The 2011 Scion xD is offered in two trim levels – Base/ Release Edition 3.0. The Base version itself is pretty well equipped but the Release Edition 3.0 adds a lot of features that increase the convenience of the car like deep tinted windows and AM/FM/HD/Satellite-prep with seek-scan, and single in-dash CD player. What’s special about the Scion xD is that even though it is a cheap car, it offers a lot of personalization options to go with. The base trim starts at $15,190 without options while the Release Edition 3.0 starts at an MSRP of $17,240.

Both trim levels of the car come with the same engine – a 1.8 L naturally aspirated one Inline-4 that produces 128 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque. Even though it does not sound very impressive on paper, this engine feels adequate when it is pulling the car.
This is then mated to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The lack of a manual mode in the automatic does take away a lot of involvement from the car.

The Scion offers the most powerful engine of the class – a fact which directly translated to better 0-60 mph times for the car. The Fiesta and Fit, however, feel better to drive as they have better handling and remain drivers’ favorites. The Honda offers the least torque in the segment, something which has been characteristic of high-revving Honda VTEC engines now.
The Scion has promised a big naturally aspirated engine so that it can produce enough power while remaining extremely frugal. And needless to say, it delivers on that promise rather well. The car can deliver a staggering 29 mpg on the combined cycle. This translated to 27 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. With a decently large 11.1 gallons of fuel tank, it returns 299 miles in the city and 366 miles on the highway.

Even though the Scion has excellent fuel efficiency, its rivals promise a bit more. The Ford Fiesta is the most fuel-efficient car of the bunch, with an amazing 37 mpg on the highway and 28 in the city. For city use, however, all cars will pretty much be at par. When it comes to fuel tank capacity, the Fiesta is ahead again with its 12-gallon tank. Thanks to its class-leading fuel economy and fuel tank capacity, Fiesta offers the best highway range of 444 miles.
The cabin of the Scion has received a bit of slack for not being friendly towards tall passengers. The roominess of the cabin conceals the fact that the seats are not too comfortable. The fit and finish in the cabin are good and in typical Toyota fashion.
Everything aside, the ride is also plush and comfortable, and there is excellent cargo space in the back.

In comparison, the Honda Fit has the most spacious rear row seats at 39/51.3/34.6 inches for head/shoulder/leg room, respectively.. The Ford Fiesta has the smallest cabin of the bunch but feels small only in this comparison. In terms of cargo space, the Scion is the smallest with just 10.5 cubic feet. The Fit has an enormous cargo area despite having a large cabin too. Some of its interior features include:
Scion has offered quite a decent package with the infotainment system. However, the system becomes engaging only when you combine it with some of the optional extras like the Alpine Premium Sound System. This option adds HD radio and a 4.3-inch touch-panel display, and it provides for up to three amplifiers: front, rear, and subwoofer. The standard speaker system has a 6-speaker 300 Watts Stereo Output that is decent. Some key infotainment features include:
The 2011 Scion xD looks chunky and larger than it really is, which has lent to the character of the car well. The car comes with 16” rims as standard, which can be upgraded to up to 18 inches, which can work well with the bulldog-like design of the Scion.
The chunky shape gives it roomy interiors but makes for a lot of wind noise when driving fast. The Scion is 154.7 inches long, 67.9 inches wide without mirrors, and 59.4 inches tall. It has a ground clearance of 6.5 inches and has a wheelbase of 96.9 inches.

The Scion is the heaviest car among its competitors at 2,665 lbs – a fact we can observe from its fuel efficiency, acceleration, as well as handling. It is also quite a bit shorter in terms of the overall length. This is a good thing if you are looking for something small for city use. The Fiesta is the longest car in the segment and measures 173 inches in length. This Scion has a ground clearance of 6.5 inches, which is very practical. In terms of wheelbase, all cars are pretty evenly matched at around 98 inches. Some standout exterior features include:
The Scion has not exactly been the safest car around. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests, the xD achieved just 'acceptable' for frontal impact, with 'good' scores in the side and rear impact. This is due to the general ignorance small cars get when it comes to safety. It has good safety features but the overall build is not exactly strong to survive a big crash. Some standout safety features include:
The 2011 Scion xD is a fun car but remains extremely desirable due to the long list of optional extras that let you customize the car according to your needs. At a price of just $15,190, it is good value as well, until you look at its competitors. The Fiestais available at 3 grand lesser and is more practical, fuel-efficient, and fun to drive as well. The Fit is also a great all-rounder that offers an amazing boot and is very easy to maintain. Overall, we would pick these cars over the Scion any day.
