Overall Rating
An angry-looking sedan with a full-time AWD and decent performance sums up the 2011 Subaru Legacy. The five-passenger sedan is available in seven trims and a variety of powertrain and gearbox options
The automotive giant Subaru has a heritage of offering sought-after products in the market that command a place in the buyer’s heart by virtue of their practicality and opulence. The Legacy is a strand of the same thread. The Subaru Legacy has been in the market for a long time now and has undergone radical design changes, facelifts, and generation changes to be the almost unblemished sedan it is today. The current iteration of the sedan vaunts a commodious cabin, abundant cargo space, and aplomb ride quality.
The 2.5i Limited trim of the Subaru Legacy is the best bet. It comes equipped with an extensive list of features that make the Subaru practical and pragmatic. The 2.5i is best suited for your daily drivers, however, if you are looking for a punchier engine, the 2.5GT gives you value for your money.

The Subaru Legacy is available with three different engine options. The base engine, which is a 2.5L flat 4 unit, produces 170hp of power and 170lb.-ft of torque. The second engine option on offer is a 3.6L flat 6 engine which produces 256hp and 247lb.-ft of torque. Perhaps, the best option on offer is a 2.5L turbocharged flat 4 engine that has the highest power and torque outputs at 265hp and 258lb.-ft, respectively.
The base engine option on offer feels rather underpowered and takes 9.4 seconds to the 60 MPH mark, making it the slowest car in comparison. The Subaru Legacy can be mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission available only with the 2.5i base trim and 2.5GT or as a CVT transmission. The 3.6R trims make use of a 5-speed SPORTSHIFT automatic transmission.

In comparison, the Nissan Altima makes use of a CVT transmission, while the Mazda 6 and Toyota Camry come mated to a 5-speed and 6-speed automatic transmission, respectively. While all cars are configured as front-wheel-drive variants, the Subaru Legacy is the only car in the segment that is offered with an all-wheel-drivetrain as standard. The Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima are quicker than the Subaru in the 60 MPH run, clocking 8.4 and 8.5 seconds, respectively.
The Subaru Legacy may not be the fastest car on the block but it adequately makes up for it with its economical fuel figures. The Subaru Legacy manages 23 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway. Combined, the Legacy manages 26 miles per gallon of fuel. The 3.6R and 2.5 GT variants of the Subaru Legacy manage less economical figures averaging a combined mileage of 20 and 21 MPG, respectively. The Mazda and Toyota have similar tank capacities as the Legacy, while the Altima features the largest tank in the segment and consequently covers maximum distance both in the city and on the highway.
The cabin of the Legacy reeks of refinement and feels top-grade with good quality materials, but we would have liked it if there was a tad bit more refinement in the materials used. Subaru’s biggest advantage is its tranquil cabin that allows for minimum road noise to sneak in. The seats feel comfortable and are appropriately positioned granting great viewing angles. Even the backseat feels comfortable, and the Legacy can easily seat five passengers. It has the ability to tread over potholes and uneven road surfaces without much difficulty.
The Subaru Legacy has a total head-, shoulder- and legroom of 40.3/56.3/43 and 37.5/56.1/37.8 inches respectively for the front and rear passengers respectively, making one of the larger cabins on offer in the segment. Its boot capacity of 14.7 cubic feet feels adequate, however, there are other cars in the segment that have additional space on offer.
