Last year's base-model Volvo V50 was powered by a 2.4-liter five-cylinder engine but it didn't deliver the premium experience you'd expect from a Volvo.
The 2011 Volvo V50 is a respectable pick among wagons in terms of performance and interior quality, although there are better choices among its competitors that have smoother rides and more cargo space. Despite that fact, the wagon remains unmatched in terms of quality and versatility, key attributes of any vehicle from the Scandinavian manufacturer.
The squad changes for the V50 wagon this year, with the lineup now consisting only of two trims - T5 and T5 R-Design. Bringing down the number opens up for a good number of features in the base trim. The 2.5L engine is the biggest attention seeker of all, but still, features are on an increase overall. A Preferred package is offered for the base T5 and adds a sunroof, a power passenger seat, and leather upholstery. The Climate package is available with both trims and includes headlight washers, automatic wipers, automatic climate control, and heated front seats.

There is also a Multimedia package that adds a navigation system and a 12-speaker premium surround-sound system that includes satellite radio. Stand-alone options include a blind-spot warning system, adaptive bi-xenon headlights, integrated rear booster seats, keyless ignition/entry, satellite radio, and rear park assist.
We Recommend:
The price difference between the two trims is just as vast as the features. Moreover, going by the reputation, it is advisable to move ahead with the T5 base trim. Those in need of features could opt for the stand-alone and packaged features explicitly available for the same. We would advise you to go with the Climate package for added comfort inside.
The V50 has been criticized to unknown levels with regard to its performance. However, taking lessons from this censure, Volvo has now discontinued the 2.4L powertrain and replaced it with an expectedly better 2.5L inline-5 cylinder engine.
Yes, you read it right. It is a 5-Cylinder engine, one like never before. With natural aspiration, the engine maker about 227 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels through a five-speed automatic with manual-shift capability.

The new engine helped the V50 get back with its competitors who were quite in tandem with the current age power requirements. In fact, the Volvo now has an upper hand over all of its rivals. However, the way it delivers this power could still do with some improvement. A 6.8 second run from 0-60 MPH is good, but not that impressive for the amount of power it makes. Besides, it also lags behind in terms of top speed requirements.
Now with the weak link out, the V50 may have gained a bit in terms of power, but that has cost it some extra fuel. The estimated fuel economy is 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, which brings it to 25 mpg combined. The inline-5 engine is a good performer, and it makes this car a kind of Mazdaspeed 3, only with a more refined chassis and powertrain. Altogether, the Volvo V50 Wagon is often overlooked, yet it delivers the experience of a European-tuned wagon in a very compelling way.

Among like-minded wagons, the figures are just enough to put the V50 for a 2nd choice. Only the Audi A4 turns over 1 MPG less than the V50, while the city mileage of the Volkswagen Jetta is unprecedentedly well maintained. With 15.9 gallons of fuel tank, the Volvo can also fit in enough regular fuel for around 350 miles.
If you like to shop at Ikea or at least admire the company's modern designs, then the 2011 Volvo V50's interior should strike your fancy. The centerpiece is the slim center stack suspended between the console and the dash. Nearly everything about the S40's interior design is a direct challenge to the relatively austere interiors found in competing models.
The R-Design in particular features cool two-tone seats and blue-faced gauges, although the overall effect is high-tech, not luxurious.

The standard upholstery in the five-occupant interior has a slightly coarse, woven feel said to be inspired by sportswear. Leather upholstery is available. The R-Design comes with unique premium leather seating surfaces. Aluminum trim is standard. There’s 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, which is less than the cargo space in many of the V50's classmates. Major interior features include-
Standard features are abundant on the Volvo, and infotainment is one of them. Volvo understands the importance of keeping the occupants entertained through the frustrating city streets and the boring empty highways. Standard features include HD Radio and auxiliary and USB inputs, Bluetooth and an eight-speaker stereo with CD player, auxiliary audio jack, and USB/iPod audio interface. For those who love to travel packed, the Multimedia package enhances these intricacies with a more intuitive touch, providing a navigation system and a 12-speaker premium surround-sound system that includes satellite radio. The Belgian-built 2011 Volvo V50 wears the brand’s traditional design language. That means, it now looks rather boxy and dated when compared to the stylish Volvo S60 sedan and Volvo XC60 crossover. Unlike a number of compact crossovers, it’s easy to step in and out of the Volvo V50, and its roof is also easily accessible.
Thin support pillars allow for lots of glass, which translates into good 360-degree visibility. The slab-sided Volvo V50 projects an image of stability and strength, while the rear-pillar mounted high taillights add a touch of exoticness to an otherwise cautious design.

The V50 looks similar to its S40 sibling. A V-shaped hood bulge runs down into a sculpted nose, and there’s a broad lower air intake. The grille receives a larger logo this year. Reflected in both its sheet metal and its cabin is a minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic that sets the wagon apart from the rest. The wagon travels substantially above the ground, thus making it a good option against tough roads. Major exterior highlights of the wagon are-
The V50 did not get crash-tested by NHTSA or the IIHS, but it did come with standard safety features like traction and stability control and brake assist. The 2011 Volvo V50 comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, and whiplash-reducing front head restraints. Optional features include integrated rear booster seats and a blind-spot warning system. Few key safety features include-
With the 2011 version of the V50 wagon, Volvo has desperately tried to put in efforts to make it more user-friendly and in line against some of the best wagons in the USA. However, as much as we hate to say it, the vehicle is still not addressed with perfection. Take the trims for that matter, which seem to be adorned with features, but careful observation reveals that those are just the basic ones. The ones with a contemporary stamp are kept to be brought explicitly, with packages priced extravagantly. Thus, it is better to look for some other options in this segment before you make up your mind to buy this.
