Overall Rating
If the Chevrolet Cruze is rebadged, remade, and revived then that is what you can call the Buick Verano, because most of its underpinnings are of the Cruze.
If the Chevrolet Cruze is rebadged, remade, and revived then that is what you can call the Buick Verano, because most of its underpinnings are of the Cruze. But this is an all-new offering from Buick for the year 2012, in the entry-level luxury sedan segment. Now such cars do get us worried about their performance, quality, and other factors but the Buick Verano leaves no stone unturned and satisfies all the prospects. Can this car step up and make its own identity?
We recommend the top-end Leather group trim. It is very affordable, and the features you get proof that there are no cheap methods here to sell the car. It is filled with features, that will help you in your daily life, and the roomy interior with the quiet cabin will definitely enhance your experience. The performance is a slight let-down, but it’s not any major issue.

The car is available in a total of 3 trim levels: Base, Convenience Group and Leather Group. All three trims get the same engine. The price starts at $22,585 and reaches a good $25,965 for the top trim. As standard features in the car, you get 18-inch alloys, cruise control, fog lights, dual-zone climate control, split-folding rear seats, and full power accessories. The optional features include a sunroof, navigation system (both not for the base trim), and you also get an Appearance package that adds a chrome grille and a rear spoiler.

The Buick gets a 2.4L I-4 engine, with a power output of 180 hp @6700 rpm and produces a torque of 171 lb.-ft @4900 rpm. This engine feels very underpowered, especially on highways. A 6-speed automatic transmission comes as standard. The gear changes are smooth and quick. The car is a Front-wheel driven car.

The Verano is a quick car, pretty much on-par with the others, with a 0-60 mph coming at 8.3 seconds. The credit for this goes to the precise automatic transmission. The quarter-mile time is also decent, at 16.2 seconds. The top speed however is the lowest in this comparison at 132 mph. The Infiniti was the quickest car of the lot, with a 0-60 mph of 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 142 mph.
The economy of the Buick is on par with class standards, and we were impressed. The automatic Buick had an economy figure of 21 mpg in the city and 32 mpg for the highway. The tank capacity is less by segment standard, and we hope that next year Buick offers a bigger tank capacity.

The range on the Verano is the lowest because of its smaller tank. At 16 gallons. It does not hold much fuel and this leaves us with a range of 327.6 city miles and 499 highway miles. The TSX offers a better city range, at 407 miles but the G sedan has a better highway range of 580 miles. The G sedan gets the largest tank at 20 gallons of storage.
The interiors in the Verano are impressive, and the overall size on the inside is more than sufficient. The entry-level luxury sedan segment is filled with competitors that offer great interiors, and the Verano is not behind at all.Â
The cabin is made of a beautiful two-tone theme which makes the interior feel very lively. There are small windows in front of the front windows, which helps with visibility. The materials are of good quality and the overall fit and finish are top-notch. There is a lot of use of soft-touch plastics as well.

The space inside the Verano is ample, with plentiful legroom and top-notch headroom on offer. Six-feet tall passengers will enjoy the comfort in this car. The rear offers great space as well. There is no problem getting in and out of the car at all. One of the best points of this car is how quiet the cabin is. However, the central space between the two rear seats is small and best used for short drives. The cargo space is impressive at 14 cubic feet for a compact sedan. A few interior features are:
The infotainment system is very feature-rich for an entry-level luxury sedan. It has a lot of useful features, even in the base trim. You get a CD player, satellite radio, USB/iPod interface, Bluetooth, auxiliary audio input jack, and a 6-speaker sound system.
You also get Buick’s IntelliLink smartphone connectivity system. The leather group adds a 9-speaker Bose audio system. Some infotainment features include:
This new Buick has an appearance like that of a larger sedan than what it actually is. The car has a very muscular stance and its attractions. The look is very simple overall. The front is defined by the massive oval headlamps with an inverted trapezium grille in between.
The fog lights are placed very low, which gives the car a sporty stance from the front. The side of the car has a sharp line running across the doors. The roofline defines the side, with its long arching shape. The rear is very unique, with unusual thick chrome accents running above the taillights.

The Verano is a very light car at 3300 lbs. It is, however, short on the length but that has not affected the interiors or the trunk space. The wheelbase of the Verano is also the tightest, at 105.7 inches. The car however has a very tall posture with its 58.4 inches height. The G25 is better on wheelbase, with a 112-inch wheelbase. It is also the heaviest. Some exterior features are:
The IIHS gave the Verano a “good” score which is a high safety rating. Standard safety features across all trims include ten airbags, antilock disc brakes, stability control, and traction control; with the OnStar Automatic Crash Response. Rear parking assist is optional. Other important safety features are:
The Buick Verano is a luxury car in disguise: it’s made like one, but not priced like one. It is much better than the Cruze it’s based on, and it definitely has its own identity as the Buick Verano. The interiors are very well made, they are feature-rich and the comfort offered is similar to what you get from the German giants. Do not think it’s a compromise because of its affordable price bracket. Performance is a compromise, but it’s something manageable. If you are on a budget, the Verano is the entry-level luxury sedan you should consider.
