About 2012 Hyundai Sonata

3.9

Overall Rating

Similar to the Elantra, the Hyundai Sonata too has taken its segment by strom with the advent of the new age fluidic design language. It no longer is just low-cost midsize sedan with a great warranty and now flaunts the curvaceous new look both on the inside and outside.

The Hyundai Sonata is a highly successful mid-size sedan from the South Korean car manufacturer and has been around since 1985. The 2012 Hyundai Sonata is a part of the sixth-generation model of the sedan and received a mid-life facelift for the current model year. The upgrades include several interiors and exterior design upgrades such as a new front grille design, new alloy wheel designs, redesigned dual-zone automatic climate controls as well as redesigned LED taillights.

We would recommend you the SE2.0T trim. It offers a powerful engine, a host of premium and convenient features with a reasonable increase in the price tag.

2012 Hyundai Sonata Review

Pros

  • Lots of standard and optional features for the money
  • Stylish and comfortable cabin
  • Strong acceleration
  • Top fuel economy
  • Excellent safety scores
  • Lengthy warranty

Cons

  • Distinctive styling affects rear headroom
  • Rough ride in SE trim

Similar to the Elantra, the Hyundai Sonata too has taken its segment by strom with the advent of the new age fluidic design language. It no longer is just low-cost midsize sedan with a great warranty and now flaunts the curvaceous new look both on the inside and outside.

Overview

The Hyundai Sonata is a highly successful mid-size sedan from the South Korean car manufacturer and has been around since 1985. The 2012 Hyundai Sonata is a part of the sixth-generation model of the sedan and received a mid-life facelift for the current model year. The upgrades include several interiors and exterior design upgrades such as a new front grille design, new alloy wheel designs, redesigned dual-zone automatic climate controls as well as redesigned LED taillights.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2012 Hyundai Sonata is offered in a total of five trim levels. The base trim is the GLS trim which is priced at $19,795. It comes with a generous amount of features such as keyless entry, cruise control, and heated mirrors. The SE trim adds a few more horsepower to the motor, comes with a sporty suspension setup, and a few cosmetic changes. There is an option to go for a 2.0liter turbocharged engine which offers a significant improvement in performance and adds some premium features too at a reasonable price.

We Recommend

We would recommend you the SE2.0T trim. It offers a powerful engine, a host of premium and convenient features with a reasonable increase in the price tag.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The 2012 Hyundai Sonata is powered by a 2.4liter I-4 motor. The four-pot motor is punchy enough for the sedan and can handle almost everything ranging from daily chores to long trips. The SE trim further adds to the sporty aspect of the sedan by adding a sport-tuned suspension and steering wheel.

The power delivery is linear and there is a negligible lag at the low-end. Even with 5 people on board, the motor doesn’t feel stressed, and the 6-speed manual transmission is sleek providing quick gear-shifts.

Among the competition, the Sonata is the most powerful sedan both in terms of horsepower and torque output at a lower base price than its rivals. The Honda Accord is the least powerful sedan on the list while the Camry is slightly more powerful than the former. Unfortunately, the top-speed of the Sonata is electronically-limited to 115mph.

Fuel Economy
7.8/10

The Hyundai Sonata with its base 2.4liter motor is quite fuel-efficient and offers a decent mix of performance and mileage at the same time. In the city, the sedan returns a healthy 24mpg while out on the highway the number rises to 35mpg. The combined mpg rating stands at a decent 30mpg. The sedan comes with a sizable 18.5 gallons gas tank and offers a great overall driving range.

Interior
8.1/10

The Hyundai Sonata is quite well built on the inside like it is on the outside. The dashboard and center stack design looks quite pleasing and blends perfectly to give a seamless look.

The sharp blue backlighting and brushed-metal style trim pieces give an additional touch of a premium feel to the cabin. All the instruments and switches operate with precision making the sedan feel more premium than it actually is.

Among the rivals, the Honda Accord has the lowest headroom for the rear passengers though by a slight margin. The Toyota Camry might feel okay on paper but it is much spacious and comfortable in real-life.

Infotainment

The infotainment system of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata is quite feature-packed and decent for an affordable sedan. The system comes with a high-resolution touchscreen display along with Hyundai’s very own BlueLink telematics which offers some handy services such as emergency crash response, remote opening of door locks, turn-by-turn navigation, and speed limits for younger drivers. Some other features include Bluetooth, a USB port, and navigation.

Some important infotainment features are:

  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • CD Player
  • MP3 Player
  • Bluetooth
  • BlueLink

Exterior
7.0/10

The Sonata looks and feels quite premium and upmarket with the new facelift. It comes with a new front grille, redesigned headlamps, LED daytime running lights, a new alloy wheel design, redesigned taillights, and new front fog lamps.

The overall length of the sedan is on the higher side and makes it look like an executive sedan. The stretched headlamp units give out a distinct appeal while the smooth and sloping roofline gives a premium touch.

Safety
