Overall Rating
The 2012 Hyundai Veracruz SUV has seating for seven -- but third-row seating is best suited for children and pre-teens. It offers 13.4 cubic feet of cargo behind the third row.
The 2012 Hyundai Veracruz SUV has seating for seven -- but third-row seating is best suited for children and pre-teens. It offers 13.4 cubic feet of cargo behind the third row. It executes the basics of family vehicles very well, with ample room and good safety scores occasionally tempered by its lower gas mileage and cargo space. Its high-quality interior, drivability, value, and styling make it a competitive, but largely overlooked player in the market segment.
The 2012 Hyundai Veracruz is a good suggestion for an SUV in the segment, except for that, the Veracruz GLS buyers will need to bring their own Bluetooth and GPS solutions, but a new Alpine system brings navigation, Bluetooth, streaming audio, a rearview camera and more to the Limited model.

The 2012 Hyundai Veracruz comes with just one powertrain configuration, with an option for changing its front-wheel-drive to all-wheel-drive. It keeps things focused on a competent, family-friendly driving feel--one without much enthusiasm.
The Veracruz powertrain pairs a 3.8-liter V-8 with 260 horsepower and 257 pound-feet of torque with a six-speed automatic. Since the Veracruz weighs about 4,300 pounds, its straight-line performance hits respectable levels, and not much more.

Fitted with optional all-wheel-drive the powertrain is capable of pushing the Veracruz to 60 mph in 8.0 seconds and onto a quarter-mile of 16.3 seconds at 86.5 mph. The six-speed transmission shifts smoothly. The Veracruz's firm suspension and quick steering give the driver confidence when the road begins to curve. The Hyundai Veracruz SUV’s sophisticated powertrain comprises an all-aluminum V6 with continuously variable valve timing, vibration-reducing electronically controlled engine mounts, and a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The EPA's gas-mileage ratings for the Veracruz carry over into the 2012 model year, at 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway for the front-drive model, and 16/22 mpg for the all-wheel-drive edition. The Veracruz has a combined mileage of 19 mph. With a 20.6-gallon fuel tank, the Veracruz can cruise for 350 miles on city traffic to 453 miles on highways. The 2012 Hyundai Veracruz is only available with one powertrain, and an option for all-wheel drive, and there are no options for more efficient driving.

Compared to other seven-seat crossovers, the Veracruz falls behind by at least a few miles per gallon on the highway cycle. The Toyota Highlander's four-cylinder engine makes the difference even starker with its 20 mpg city and 25 mpg highway ratings. Other cars in the segment have a comparable mileage and a fuel tank capacity not far from what the Hyundai provides.
The Veracruz is spacious in the first two rows of seats, and adults will have enough room in the front four positions, with space in the second-row bench for a smaller person. The third-row seat isn't quite big enough for fully grown humans, though, in proportion with the rest of the Veracruz' body.
Cargo space suffers from that too, the curvy rear end cuts into rear-end space that's a snap to tap in a Flex. GLS models have fabric seats, but the uplevel Limited trim gets leather upholstery. Blue backlighting illuminates the instruments, dashboard controls, and cup holders.

The cabin features wood and faux-aluminum trim and accents, with controls laid out in a clean, minimalist fashion. The Veracruz GLS offers a Premium Package that adds a power tilt-and-slide sunroof, power tailgate, auto-dimming interior mirror with HomeLink and compass, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, heated front seats, windshield wiper de-icer, a power liftgate, and heated front seats.
The standard equipment list of a 2012 Hyundai Veracruz GLS includes a 6-speaker AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with USB/iPod and an auxiliary audio jack. A new feature this year is an Alpine audio system with satellite and HD radio, streaming radio via Pandora and Bluetooth, DVD playback, and touchscreen navigation, but it's only available on the Limited model.
Three-tiered headlights wrap around and up the fenders. 2012 models gain the European-market grill and optional 18-inch hyper silver wheels. All its design cues combine to give the looks of a more expensive vehicle.
