Overall Rating
The 2012 Infiniti QX56 is the flagship full-size SUV offered by Infiniti. Last year, the QX56 received a major overhaul, which shifted the car’s Nissan-derived platform to its own platform.
The 2012 Infiniti QX56 is the flagship full-size SUV offered by Infiniti. Last year, the QX56 received a major overhaul, which shifted the car’s Nissan-derived platform to its own platform. There were major interior changes as well, and this big change increased the overall competitiveness of the car by miles. Big SUVs are generally not easy to handle, but the QX56 is a tamed beast. You will be impressed by how easy this car is at handling and steering.
We feel the option of a 7-seater or an 8-seater is completely yours to make. But if you are going to take the car to some mountains and trails, we recommend you to get the 4WD version, or else, you can stick with the 2WD. In the packages, we suggest the Deluxe Touring Package and the Technology package.

The QX56 is available in one trim only. You have the option of a 7-seater or an 8-seater. These two options come with the option of a rear-wheel-drive or an all-wheel drive. The car has a long list of features, to name a few: fog lights, rear privacy glass, sunroof, powered liftgate, front and rear parking sensors, automatic tri-zone climate control, keyless entry and ignition, leather upholstery, heated 10-way adjustable driver’s seat with memory option, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, etc.

The QX56 gets a V8 engine as standard. This 5.6L V8 engine produces 400 hp @5800 rpm and 413 lb.-ft @4000 rpm. A 7-speed automatic transmission is standard. The car is a rear-wheel-drive car, with the 4WD option as optional along with low range capability.
This engine is more than sufficient to tag this beast without any acceleration drops. There is a limit to how well the car can handle at high speed or tight spaces, and there is body roll in corners, but it can be minimized with the use of the packages. The SUV touches the 60 mph mark in 6.7 seconds and completes the quarter-mile in 15.2 seconds.

The GL450 gets the smallest engine, but it’s the best of the three in terms of performance. The 0-60 mph mark is the same as the QX56 at 6.7 seconds, but it beats the other two by a millisecond in terms of the quarter-mile. The top speed of the car is 144 mph. The QX56 has a top speed of 142 mph, and the car is pretty stable no matter what you throw at it.
The QX56 offers a better fuel economy in this comparison, at 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg for the highway. This is for the rear-wheel-drive type. The All-wheel drive returns the same mileage numbers as the rear-wheel drive, which is surprising for a car of this class but very impressive. The SUV comes with a fuel tank capacity of 26 gallons, which results in a range of 364 city miles and 520 highway miles.

The Escalade has the same fuel economy as the QX56 in the city, but it is less on the highway at 18 mpg. The GL450 has the same highway fuel economy as the Escalade but a lower fuel economy in the city at 13 mpg. The range on the QX56 is leading, with 364 city miles and 500+ highway miles. The other two cars fall slightly behind. All the cars get 26-gallon fuel tanks.
The interior in the QX56 is mind-blowing awesome. The interior is as high-end as some of the luxury SUVs in the market. Its is welcoming, with large windows that allow loads of light, making the cabin bright and fresh.
The materials used are of high quality, with a lot of soft-touch materials around in the cabin. The fit and finish is top-notch, and the buttons feel strong and not plasticky. The features can overload your mind, but they’re easy to use and simple in their layout.

The car comes as a 7-seater or as an 8-seater. The front and rear seats are the rulers of comfort and support and are very relaxing on long drives. There is enough headroom and legroom in the front two rows, and there have been no complaints from the customers about the ride quality as well. The third row, however, is best suited for kids, and we wish the QX56 would’ve done better in that area. But the compromise in the third row is to provide more luggage space as it provides 16.6 cu-ft behind the third row. Few interior features are:
The infotainment system of the QX56 is feature-rich and covers everything you’d expect in a car like this. The infotainment features include a CD player, satellite radio, auxiliary audio jack, USB/iPod interface, Bluetooth phone connectivity with audio streaming, a voice-activated navigation system with real-time traffic, and a 13-speaker Bose audio system. The Theatre package adds a rear-seat dual-screen video entertainment system. The Deluxe Touring package adds a 15-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system. Some infotainment features include:
The exterior of the QX56 was brought up to the current design standards with last year’s upgrade, and we certainly prefer this over the last one. Even then, the front and rear design of the car is unique and quirky. The shape and proportions reminded us of the old large SUVs we would get. The windows are large, and though you sit high up, visibility can be an issue because of the tall and long bonnet.
The headlamps and the bulged-out grille drew all the attention, and the reaction was mixed. The sides show the car’s tall height and has huge wheel arches with a straight roof that drops down at the rear into the tailgate. The tailgate is simple, with a large rear window and simple taillights. Overall, this car has a road presence like none other.

The QX56 has the most ground clearance of the three, and this came in very handy when you went off the tarmac. The long length and width can be a matter of concern when driving this car around, but with enough practice, it’s a cakewalk. The wheelbase on the QX56 is similar to the GL450’s, even though the GL is shorter in length, width, and height. This has given the GL an advantage in third-row comfort. The weight of the GL and the QX56 is similar, whereas the Cadillac is the heaviest. Exterior highlights to name a few are:
The QX56 has not been crash-tested by any major agency yet. But with the kind of features on offer in the QX56, and combined with its humongous proportions, we believe it will do well in this area. The QX56 comes standard with dual front, side, and curtain airbags, stability control, anti-lock brakes, tire-pressure monitors, and active headrests. Also, a set of cameras all around the car provides a 180-degree view of the car. The Technology package adds some high-end safety features such as a lane-departure warning and prevention system, brake assist, collision alert, and a blind-spot warning system. Few salient safety features include-
The 2012 Infiniti QX56 has got no major changes to it, and last year itself, the car was very highly recommended by us to all the readers. But the addition of better safety equipment for the year 2012 makes the QX56 an even more reliable car. The car has a very balanced character, and we are satisfied by what all it can do in terms of performance and features. The off-road capabilities are very extensive, and this can be a package for the family person and for the adventure inside of that person. We surely recommend this car as you will not regret your decision if you choose one.
