About 2013 BMW X3

4.2

Overall Rating

The BMW X3 ranks near the top of its class, due in part to its great safety ratings, pleasant ride and handling, and robust engine performance. The 2013 BMW X3 is the latest member of the Bavarian brand to lose its naturally aspirated inline-6 base engine in favor of a high-tech, turbocharged four-cylinder that produces equal power and more torque, yet returns significantly improved fuel economy.

However ludicrous it may sound, this BMW crossover SUV just got better. While the previous X3 was a little harsh, a little plasticky inside, and just too much like an ill-tuned 3-Series wagon on stilts, the 2013 X3 hits all the right marks, satisfying luxury buyers with its badge and its suave styling, giving enthusiasts more to cheer about with its brisk acceleration and handling, and making more room for all its passengers while boosting its gas-mileage numbers.

In 2013 BMW X3, the base model - xDrive28i has almost all the features standardised, hence the base model itself is a good catch if you are looking for something within your budget. There are plenty of add on features and packages to choose from as well.

2013 BMW X3 Review

Pros

  • Brisk acceleration
  • Good fuel economy ratings
  • Athletic handling

Cons

  • iDrive infotainment system can be confusing

Engine and Performance
8.4/10

BMW has gone all-turbo with its sedans already, and for 2013 it happens for the X3. What had essentially been the unthinkable just a few years ago is now reality: Instead of the sweet, much-loved normally aspirated in-line six-cylinder engines, there's a 2.0-liter TwinPower four in the X3 xDrive28i and a 300-hp turbo six in the xDrive35i.

Essentially, it's the same 2.0-liter 'N20' TwinPower four that's offered in those other cars--making 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. That's the same power, but 39 pound-feet more torque than last year's engine.

The Audi Q5 and BMW X3 are both top picks in the luxury compact SUV class, and it may come down to personal preference when deciding between these two. Both SUVs offer potent engine performance and comparable ride and handling. The Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class tops the X3 in a few key areas. The GLK does have its trade-offs, though. It’s not as fun to drive as the X3, but has recorded a better quarter mile time which is marginally better than the X3 but not as good as the Q5.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

Change has come to the X3 lineup for 2013--with a turbocharged four-cylinder replacing the outgoing normally-aspirated six in the X3 xDrive28i. The new xDrive28i is rated by the EPA at an impressive 21 mpg city, 28 highway, while the 300-hp xDrive35i earns 19/26-mpg ratings. Both versions get the benefit of an eight-speed automatic.

U.S. versions now also get the Auto Start-Stop system, which wisely stops the engine at stoplights, with your foot on the brake, then restarts the engine when you start to lift off the brake pedal. Unfortunately in the X3, with the four-cylinder engine, it's a little rough in the way that it shuts the engine off. Out of the featured SUVs above, the X3 has the best fuel economy with 24 combined mpg.

Interior
7.4/10

The X3's interior will be familiar to anyone who has spent time in a BMW product. Classic analog gauges, sensible ergonomics and a restrained overall aesthetic combine to create a pleasant driving environment. Occupants will feel cocooned within the high-quality materials covering the seats, consoles and dash.

BMW's iDrive electronics interface gives you the opportunity to control things you never could before, though it can come off as rather complicated. Most rival systems are easier to use.

While still considered a small crossover, the current-generation X3 has swelled to proportions similar to the previous-generation X5. As such, room for front passengers is more than ample, while rear legroom is downright generous and pairs with a truly comfortable seat. Indeed, this is one of the most family-friendly vehicles in the class. Total cargo capacity with the rear seats folded is 63.3 cubic feet, which makes it one of the larger small crossovers.

2013 BMW X3 SUV Infotainment System

The 2013 BMW X3 comes with no lack of standard features; but just as with other BMW models, if you want some of the best infotainment, luxury, or performance items, you'll need to pay extra.

All models have standard power front seats; automatic climate control; Bluetooth; and an audio system with 205 watts of power, 12 speakers, a USB port, HD and satellite radio. BMW's iDrive system is standard, too, but if you add navigation you also get a large 8.8-inch LCD screen that displays information from the audio, phone, and navigation systems, and comes bundled with real-time traffic information and full iPod integration.

Exterior
8.5/10

Rugged and blocky are out, insofar as the X3 is concerned, while the X3's look, if we had to sum it up, would be lean, pert, and graceful. The sweeping character lines that distinguish its doors now wouldn't be out of place on a 3-Series wagon.

The nose tapers low, gently, avoiding the tall, blocky trap set by some other compact crossovers as they attempt to ape "real SUV" lines. LED taillamps like the ones on the 3-Series sedan cap the tail.

The X3 was completely redesigned for 2011, to become longer, wider, and more physically impressive than before. It also found more in common visually with other BMW vehicles, in addition to the larger X5. All of it, and the key to the X3's high-class look--is infused with more attention to detail and surfacing than before, without going overboard on functionless style, as BMW's seen in its recent past. When compared to the other SUVs, the X3 has almost the same figures as its competitors, being the heaviest of them all.

Safety
9.9/10

The 2013 BMW X3 manages, like many offerings from high-end German luxury makers, to satisfy both a need for tried-and-true occupant safety, as well as some innovative advanced-tech safety features.

Standard safety features on the X3 include all the usual airbags, active front head restraints, anti-lock brakes, and stability systems. In Sport mode, drivers of a navigation-and-iDrive-equipped X3 can customize that Sport mode for differing levels of stability control. A stability-control mode with a higher threshold of intervention also aids traction and confidence in snow. A head-up system is also on offer and might help reduce driver distraction.

  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Child Safety Locks
  • Traction Control
  • Auto-Leveling Headlights (Optional)
  • Lane Departure Warning (Optional)

Final Verdict

The BMW X3 is a great option if you’re shopping for a luxury compact SUV. It features the generous seating space, crisp interior, and comfortable ride that shoppers expect of a luxury SUV. It distances itself from the competition thanks to its athletic handling and muscular engines. In fact, it drives more like a sports sedan than an SUV.
