Overall Rating
Since the entire car itself is new, we see what changes Subaru undergoes in designing a relatively new car. To start with, all Subaru cars have had all-wheel drive since 1997, with almost all of its performance models having been turbocharged as well. The 2013 Subaru BRZ coupe, however, features a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-4 engine that sends 200 horsepower just to the rear two-wheels.
After nearly four years of development and plenty of concepts, prototypes, and hype, the 2013 Subaru BRZ has finally arrived. Unlike so many things in life, this compact sports coupe was actually well worth the wait. With its superb chassis, communicative steering, and light curb weight, the BRZ proves that you don't need a ton of power to have a ton of fun. It also proves that this quirky Japanese car brand isn't a slave to tradition. Every Subaru made since 1997 has had an all-wheel drive, while almost all of its performance models sold in America have been turbocharged. The BRZ, however, features a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter flat-4 engine that sends 200 horsepower to the rear wheels only.
The hype accompanying the 2013 Subaru BRZ was deafening, but this fun little coupe is definitely worth the noise, and with the vast number of features offered in their basic trim, we would recommend the basic trim - Premium. The next trim, which is the Limited, adds a luxury touch to the car.

The 2013 Subaru BRZ is a four-seat compact coupe available in two trims, namely Premium and Limited. The Premium model comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, summer tires, a limited-slip rear differential, automatic bi-xenon headlights, LED running lights, keyless entry, cruise control, air-conditioning, full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, a height-adjustable driver seat, and a fold-down rear seatback. Electronic features include a touchscreen interface, a navigation system, voice controls, real-time traffic, Bluetooth phone, and audio connectivity, hands-free text messaging, and an eight-speaker sound system with a CD player, HD radio, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack, and an iPod/USB audio interface.

Paying extra for the BRZ Limited means buyers receive leather seats with Alcantara suede inserts, heated front seats, heated side mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, fog lights, keyless access, and push-button start, rear spoiler, interior courtesy lighting, and more. In Limited models, there are slightly upgraded bolsters as well as Alcantara (suede-like) trim. There is a back seat, but this is strictly a 2+2, adults aren't going to be able to get into it easily or even manage to wedge their legs behind the front seat.
We Recommend
The hype accompanying the 2013 Subaru BRZ was deafening, but this fun little coupe is definitely worth the noise, and with the vast number of features offered in their basic trim, we would recommend the basic trim - Premium. The next trim, which is the Limited, adds a luxury touch to the car.
The Subaru BRZ is equipped with a high-performance version of the company's new 2.0-liter, horizontally opposed, 4-cylinder "Boxer" engine. This engine makes 200 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb.-ft. of torque at 6,400 rpm, effectively generating 100 horsepower per liter of displacement.
The BRZ's rear wheels are fed power through a standard 6-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters mounted to the steering wheel. The automatic transmission features Sport and Winter driving modes, and includes throttle-blipping during downshifts. A limited-slip rear differential helps to make the best use of the BRZ's power.

Comparatively the Subaru falls short behind its above featured competitors marginally. Ford Mustang leads the way in anything related to speed and engine displacement, hence it's the fastest in the class. The Mazda gets its figures just above Subaru as it has somewhat similar stats in all the featured criteria.
The 2013 Subaru BRZ is tuned for performance above nearly all else. So it might come as a little surprising that it achieves Combined EPA ratings of up to 25 mpg—and up to 30 mpg on the highway, thanks in part to the Toyota direct-injection system that it's fitted with. The BRZ is surprisingly fuel-efficient, especially on the highway. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 22 mpg city/30 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined with the manual and an excellent 25/34/28 with the automatic.

The tables have turned when it comes to fuel efficiency, as the Subaru takes the pole position here, along with the Mazda who has almost identical figures. The Ford Mustang, as expected, does not give you much efficiency, mainly because these cars featured here are performance-oriented and the people willing to buy them have already set their minds to sacrifice the fuel economy side of things.
Inside, we like the basic, down-to-business cockpit look, and how a few of the controls follow industrial inspiration—with the nut-and-bolt design of the climate-control knobs, for instance, or the textured material that looks like corrugated metal surrounding them.
Some of the materials used could have been more exciting, though, in front of the passenger seat is a large, continuous slab of light-silvery-colored plastic, which doesn't quite match with the more metallic trim alongside the center stack.

The BRZ's front seats are supportive enough for hard-driving, yet still comfortable for long-distance trips as well. People of just about any size should find the driving position to be quite agreeable, and thanks to the low-profile hood, there's an expansive view of the road ahead. There's a backseat, too, but few adults are likely to want to sit back there. Legroom is next to nil, your head will be perilously close to the rear glass (or entirely pressed against it) and the center tunnel impedes hiproom. Trunk space is also rather small at 6.9 cubic feet, but folding down that mostly useless backseat expands cargo-carrying abilities considerably. Major interior features include-
There's no shortage of features, however, as even the base model is loaded with high-tech items like navigation, HD radio, and Bluetooth phone, and audio connectivity. Unfortunately, those particular features are controlled by a standard touchscreen interface that's difficult to use. The menu layout requires a lot of back-and-forth commands and the small virtual buttons are tough to press on the first try. Not helping matters is that there are no audio controls on the steering wheel. As such, you'll spend a lot of time taking your eyes off the road to fiddle with the controls. Just for this reason alone, the FR-S and its more traditional sound system design is pretty tempting. Major infotainment features include-Â
From the front, you'll probably find its hood exceptionally low—punctuating its very low engine mounting and low center of mass—with the low grille only below the bumper and headlights that spread wide into the fenders.
Those headlights are about the only styling element that the BRZ has in common with Subaru's other cars. In the back, the look is more complex, with some of the headlight design echoed in the taillights but with carved-out sheet metal in the middle, along with a blacked-out rear valance, with twin pipes plus lights in the middle.

All the three cars compared here are having similar characteristics when it comes to length, width, height, or even the wheelbase, only some marginal change of figures differ them on the rank list. But in curb weight comparison, the Ford leads the way being the heaviest in the group. The Mazda marginally falls short to the Subaru in all the featured aspects. Few key features include-
Since the 2013 Subaru BRZ is an all-new model, built with an entirely new structure, we can't yet verify its standards for occupant protection. But Subaru emphasizes that the BRZ's structure does have safety as well as weight savings in mind, with a structure that extensively uses high-tensile-strength steel and borrows the safety-ring structure that's used in other models from the brand. So far it's already proven itself well, as the BRZ has already earned Top Safety Pick status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
In addition to a multi-mode stability control system, four-channel ABS, electronic brake-force distribution, Brake Assist, and Brake Override, and although the BRZ doesn't have all-wheel drive like the rest of the Subaru lineup, we'll wager that its responsible and predictable handling is bound to be an asset in accident avoidance. Major safety features include-
The 2013 Ford Mustang is a bit bigger than the BRZ, and it has much more trunk space. Another impressive factor is Mustang's strong acceleration with any of its available engines, as well as its composed ride quality. The 2013 Mazda Miata has athletic handling, communicative steering, and slick manual transmission. Its four-cylinder engine delivers ample power and agreed that it is a very fun car to drive. The hype accompanying the 2013 Subaru BRZ was deafening, but this fun little coupe is definitely worth the noise.
