The lower end trims offer limited creature comforts and focus more on practicality and affordability, thus it is preferred to opt for the Sport trim with the base engine option. The Sport trim has plenty of features while the four-cylinder has a decent fuel economy to make it more usable on the daily basis.

The Subaru Legacy is powered by two engine options and is available in four trims. The larger flat-6 engine is available only with the base and top Limited trim after the omission of Premium trim this year, while the 2.5GT trim has also been eliminated from the lineup. Most of the premium features and technology are available only from the Sport trim onwards and one has to shell additional money to enjoy the Legacy to the fullest.

The new Subaru Legacy is offered with two engine options, a 2.5-liter horizontal four-cylinder engine producing 173 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque while there is also a 3.6-liter flat-6 engine rated for 256 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque.
The base engine is paired up with a CVT transmission while the six-cylinder unit gets a 5-speed automatic transmission, while all-wheel drive is obviously standard across the board.

The Toyota Camry is similarly priced as that of the Legacy and also has a pretty engine output, thus resulting in similar acceleration performance. The Nissan Altima has marginally higher power and torque figures and hence is slightly quicker than the other two Japanese models. The Ford Fusion on the other hand is the slowest in the straight-line acceleration tests.
The standard AWD might make people think of the Legacy as a high fuel consumption car, but the newer generation of the engine is a lot more efficient as the EPA rates the four-cylinder engine for 27 mpg of combined city and highway driving while the six-cylinder unit has a much higher fuel gulping tendencies as it is rated for just 20 mpg. The large 18.5-gallon fuel tank aids in providing over 500 miles of highway cruising on a single tank of gas.

The Ford Fusion has the highest fuel consumption dispute being the FWD sedan. The Nissan Altima is the most efficient of the lot and also employs a sizable gas tank which aids it in providing a class-leading driving range. The Toyota Camry on the other hand is marginally more frugal than the Legacy, but the smaller gas tank adversely affects the range.
The cabin of the Subaru Legacy has a neat layout with a good fit and finish, although the quality of materials in some places isn’t on par with the competition.
There is plenty of space up front and the rear seat also has enough space to accommodate most Americans with relative comfort. The trunk capacity is on the smaller side and is just on par with the segment.Â

The Ford Fusion has the most spacious cabin and offers maximum space for both the front and rear-seat passengers, alongside a large trunk volume. The Altima on the other hand has ample room at the front, but has the most compact rear-seat legroom, while the Toyota Camry offers the best legroom for rear seat occupants but compromises a lot at the front.Â
The Legacy has a pretty simple and minimalistic controls layout on lower-end trims but they get complicated as more features are added higher up the trim ladder. The standard speaker system isn’t really enjoyable and it is suggested to opt for the Optional 9-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system that enhances the entertainment aspect of the car multiple folds.Â
The new Subaru Legacy has a pretty sophisticated and classy design on the outside just as on the inside.
The small-ish front grille with large headlamps and chunky bumpers make for an aggressive front fascia, while the simple and clean-looking body style is on par with the executive appeal of the midsize sedans.

The Ford Fusion and the Nissan Altima are both considerably larger than the Legacy and hence offer more cabin and trunk space. The Altima is substantially lighter as well which aids it in achieving superior fuel efficiency, but it rides closest to the ground and the Ford Fusion has the best ground clearance to offer.
Subaru has more often than not excelled in the safety aspect of their cars and the Legacy is another such example from the Japanese carmaker.
