Overall Rating
The 2013 Subaru Outback is one of the best crossover SUVs for people who enjoy the outdoors. It is an incredibly well-designed car and has earned a lot of praise from users.
The 2013 Subaru Outback is one of the best crossover SUVs for people who enjoy the outdoors. It has an excellent all-wheel-drive system and now comes with a new and more efficient engine, better suspension tuning, and an updated continuously variable transmission gearbox. It is an incredibly well-designed car and has earned a lot of praise from users.
Since we find the 2.5 L four-cylinder engine to be adequately fast and more fuel-efficient, it is not impossibly hard to resist the 3.6 L with the price point it is offered at. Agreed, it makes the car a truly capable machine and hence would be the recommended pick, but the 3.6R is only on par with the 2.5i which is a bit bare-bones. The 2.5i Limited trim is much more well loaded in terms of the features it offers, including dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, four-way passenger seat, and Harman Kardon audio system, thus become the recommended pick.

The 2013 Subaru Outback range is divided into five trim levels - 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R, and 3.6R Limited. It is now sporting a revised front-end design that makes the car much more cohesive in terms of its overall design language. There is the choice of two engine options - both horizontally opposed “boxer” engines with four and six cylinders in 2.5 L and 3.6 L displacements respectively. The car is offered with either a 6-speed CVT automatic or a 5-speed automatic transmission and is available only with all-wheel drive like all Subaru cars.

From this model year, the 2013 Subaru Outback gets a brand-new 2.5L four-cylinder engine that is good for 173 hp @ 5600 RPM and 174 lb-ft of torque @ 4000 RPM. This is mated to a six-speed CVT transmission or a 5-speed automatic transmission. By default, the Outback comes with an all-wheel-drive drivetrain, and there is no other option available as well.
The second engine option comes in the form of a 3.6L horizontally opposed six-cylinder that makes 256 hp and 247 pound-feet of torque. It is a little less fuel-efficient, but with it, the 2013 Outback is very brisk and does the 0-60MPH run in just 7.3 seconds while covering the quarter-mile in 15.0 seconds. The SUV tops out at 130 mph.

One can see that the Subaru Outback is the most powerful car in its class, and is much superior to its rivals that are equipped with a front-wheel-drive powertrain when it comes to real-world performance. The Volkswagen Jetta is almost equal in terms of performance, but that is only on paper. In comparison, the Hyundai Elantra is much duller. The Outback is the best in terms of driving dynamics as well as performance. It also has excellent off-road capabilities, unlike its rivals.
Subaru has complimented the Outback’s go-anywhere ability with the perfectly fuel-efficient powertrain with ease. Equipped with the 2.5L engine, the Outback returns 24 MPG within city limits, 30 MPG on the highways, which results in a combined mileage of 26 MPG. If you opt for the six-cylinder powertrain, however, the Outback only has a modest fuel efficiency of 18/25/20. With a huge fuel tank capacity of 18.5 gallons, it has an excellent range of 444 miles in the city and 555 miles on the highway.

The Subaru Outback becomes the class benchmark in terms of fuel efficiency figures with its 2.5 L engine. It is not only the most powerful engine, but it also remains on par with its rivals in terms of fuel efficiency. The Jetta and the Elantra have slightly better figures but not enough to offset the power difference. One should also note that the all-wheel-drive powertrain does make the car very much capable in places where its rivals can’t dream of going.
The Subaru Outback’s dimensions have grown over time, but this has resulted in the interiors having excellent space. The use of hard plastics does give away a bit of the appeal the car has, but it is hard to find faults. Even the rear row can accommodate tall passengers with ease, and the trunk space is excellent at 34.3 ft.³.

All the wagons offer seating capacity for five people, but it is an Outback that offers the most amount of space in comparison. There are a lot of interior storage spaces, and the company has really set itself as a class apart in terms of functional design. The Subaru Outback offers the highest cargo capacity, even though its rivals offer very close capacities. The main interior features of the 2013 Subaru Outback include:
With the Subaru Outback, the company has not bothered providing it with the best of infotainment. It has a 7-inch touchscreen display but gets a pretty basic audio system. However, there is a Harman Kardon audio system offered as an option and makes for a very good pick. The standout infotainment features of the 2013 Subaru Outback include:
The 2013 model year sees slight updates for the front-end of the Outback. This update brings crucial design elements that really make the look of the car very cohesive. Even though it is no great looking car yet its proportions have become much more elegant. It is still one of the largest cars in its class and is certainly the heaviest at a whopping 3,498 lbs.

If you look at the comparison, you can understand that the Outback is a huge and spacious car when you compare it to its rivals. It is bigger than its rivals in just about all dimensions. Hence we cannot complain that the car is heavier than its competitors by almost a couple of hundred lbs. One should also note that the Outback provides much better ground clearance than rivals and hence adds to the functionality. Some exterior features of the 2013 Subaru Outback include:
Subaru has a reputation for making very safe cars and the Outback has scored five stars out of five stars in the overall crash protection, in the NHTSA crash tests. It has also earned the title of ‘Top safety pick +’ in the IIHS crash tests, which make it one of the safest cars on the road this year. It has basic safety features but comes with the excellent build quality and structural integrity. The main safety features of the 2013 Outback include:
The 2013 Subaru Outback is an excellent choice for anybody who wants a wagon that is capable both on the road and off it. It offers a great ride, the best performance in its class, and a host of safety features while still remaining very practical and fuel-efficient. It trades a bit of its snappy handling in favor of more space, but still, is the most capable car you can buy in the segment.
