The 2013 Volvo XC60 is powered by two engine options, a 3.2-liter naturally aspirated inline-6 engine and a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine which produces a whopping 325 hp. The base 3.2L engine is good for a healthy 240 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque and the engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission which powers the front wheels as standard.

The base engine manages to propel the XC60 to 60 mph in a respectable 6.9 seconds whereas the quarter-mile is covered in just over the 15 seconds mark. The maximum towing capacity is also rated at 3,300 lbs which incidentally is the same for even the more powerful turbocharged unit.

The Acura MDX has the highest power output whereas the BMW X3 has the highest torque figures, and hence, both are amongst the fastest in the segment. The Audi Q5 has the lowest power output in this comparison and hence is the slowest in the quarter-mile run, whereas the Volvo is the slowest to accelerate to 60 mph due to its lowest torque output.

The EPA rates the XC60 for 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highways, the overall combined fuel economy is rated at 21 mpg. Despite featuring a large 18.5-gallon gas tank, the driving range on the XC60 is limited to well under 400 miles in combined city and highway driving conditions.

The BMW X3 has the most frugal engine here and the sizable fuel tank helps it achieve a decent driving range. The Q5 on the other hand offers the largest fuel tank which translates to the best driving range amongst the cars present here. Although the Acura has identical fuel efficiency ratings as that of the Audi, the small fuel tank adversely affects the driving range.

Volvo seems to have focused on the betterment of the interiors and the XC60 is the first one to get the updated treatment in their lineup and it is also their best effort yet. The metallic thin panel center stack with optional wooden inlays together with the optional two-tone upholstery, makes the car look premium and modern.

There is a decent amount of space for all the occupants, both at the front and the rear, whereas the available integrated dual child booster seats are a welcome addition. Cargo space is pretty extensive too as it can hoard over 30 cu-ft of luggage even when seating five passengers, whereas folding down the rear seats opens up a maximum of 67.4 cu-ft of cargo space.

The BMW X3 is the most compact crossover over here in terms of legroom at the front, whereas the Acura feels the most spacious. At the back though, the BMW offers plenty of space which none of the other cars can match up to, but compromises on the cargo space. The Audi Q5 has the least amount of space for its passengers. How is the 2013 Volvo XC60’s infotainment system?

The 2013 Volvo XC60 features a large 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system which Volvo likes to call Volvo Sensus. It functions well for most parts but the navigation system looks outdated.
