Among all the trims, the 3.2 R-Design Premier Plus is the most value for money offering. It offers several convenience and comfort features such as self-leveling rear suspension, full leather upholstery, and sport-tuned steering and suspension.
The Volvo XC90 is powered by a standard 2.0-liter inline-four motor. The motor offers a decent power output of 240 horsepower and 236lb-ft of torque. The power figures will not appeal to those who seek a strong performance, but the motor can handle all daily activities and highway cruising quite well even when fully loaded.
The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and it is quite brilliant by nature. The gear-shifts are smooth and seamless and keep the engine from working too hard.

Among the competitors, the XC90 is the least powerful of all along with the smallest motor under its hood. The Audi Q7 with its supercharged V6 motor offers the same amount of power as the Volkswagen’s Touareg with its naturally aspirated V6. However, the Q7 offers the best torque output among the rivals.
The 2013 Volvo XC90 offers a decent amount of fuel economy considering its engine size and power figures. On city limits, it returns 16mpg while on the highways the figure goes up to 23mpg. The combined rating stands at 19mpg.

The Audi Q7 and the Touareg offer more or less similar fuel efficiency figures which are quite decent given their engine displacement and power figures.
The interior of the 2013 Volvo XC90 is quite well-appointed and comfortable. The seats offer excellent support and a generous amount of shoulder room. The middle row seats are quite comfortable too and offer a good amount of cushioning making them ideal for long trips.
The third-row seats are quite small and best suited for small kids over a short distance. The interior materials are made out of premium quality and there are plenty of soft-touch materials around the cabin.

The Audi Q7 has the least headroom for the front passengers while the rest of the dimensions are more or less similar to the rivals on the list.
The infotainment system of the XC90 is pretty basic for a premium SUV and comes with some standard features such as a navigation system with remote control, a rear-seat entertainment system, and Bluetooth.
Some highlighted features include:
The exterior of the XC90 has a heavily understated design. The front profile looks ordinary with Volvo’s iconic logo and a mesh front grille. The double-barrel headlights look elegant and the side profile looks slim for an SUV and the fenders don’t protrude too much.
The rear-end looks quite elegant yet classy with Volvo’s unique taillight design. The tailgate bears a unique design with a high-mounted chrome strip with Volvo written above it.

Volvo is renowned across the globe for its extremely well-built vehicles and excellent safety scores as well. The NHTSA didn’t rate the SUV but the IIHS tested it and awarded it with the prestigious “Top Safety Pick +” award and a best possible “Good” overall rating. The standard features include rear parking sensors and rain-sensing wipers.
Some highlighted safety features of the SUV are:
The Volvo XC90 is a decent three-row offering from the Swedish car manufacturer and goes against some well-established rivals in the segment such as the Audi Q7. The SUV sure lacks in the performance aspect with its mediocre and rather small motor but offers much more in terms of comfort and features. Overall it is a perfect luxury vehicle for those who prefer a comfortable riding experience with excellent safety features.
