The Volvo XC90 is powered by a standard 2.0-liter inline-four motor. The motor offers a decent power output of 240 horsepower and 236lb-ft of torque. The power figures will not appeal to those who seek a strong performance, but the motor can handle all daily activities and highway cruising quite well even when fully loaded.

The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and it is quite brilliant by nature. The gear-shifts are smooth and seamless and keep the engine from working too hard.

Among the competitors, the XC90 is the least powerful of all along with the smallest motor under its hood. The Audi Q7 with its supercharged V6 motor offers the same amount of power as the Volkswagen’s Touareg with its naturally aspirated V6. However, the Q7 offers the best torque output among the rivals.

The 2013 Volvo XC90 offers a decent amount of fuel economy considering its engine size and power figures. On city limits, it returns 16mpg while on the highways the figure goes up to 23mpg. The combined rating stands at 19mpg.

The Audi Q7 and the Touareg offer more or less similar fuel efficiency figures which are quite decent given their engine displacement and power figures.
