The most suited BMW X5 will depend on the buyer’s pocket and the amount of power they want in the car. We recommend buying the mid-level trim, the xDrive35i. While its host’s similar features like the base and top-rack trim, its four-wheel-drivetrain, and appropriate price sticker make it a viable option.

The engine powering your X5 will depend on the trim you opt for. Under the hood, the BMW X5 houses either a 3.0L I-6 engine or a 4.4L V8 engine, both of which are exemplary in performance. The 3.0L I-6 engine is capable of producing 300hp of engine power and 300lb.-ft of torque, which is exceedingly well for a car of its size. 

The more powerful engine, the 4.4L V8 produces a mesmerizing 445 hp and 480lb.-ft of power and torque respectively, that grants the car with aplomb acceleration capabilities. The BMW X5 races to 60 MPH from a still in 6.0 seconds and can complete the quarter-mile run in 14.6 seconds at 96 miles per hour.

The Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7 feature a 3.6 L V6 engine and 3.0L V6 respectively. As standard, all cars in the segment make use of an 8-speed-automatic transmission with all-wheel-drivetrains. Courtesy of their low torque and power outputs, the Cayenne and Q7 remain marginally behind the X5 in the acceleration test, taking 7.4 and 7.7 seconds to the 60 MPH mark. In the race to the top-speed, the Q7 leads the pack at 130 MPH, while the figures for the Cayenne are not available, the X5 has a top speed of 127 MPH.

The BMW X5 like many other brawny SUV’s succumbs to the general notion regarding lower fuel efficiency. The X5 performs decently averaging a mileage of 18 MPG in the city and that of 27 MPG on the highway. Combined, the X5 averages 21 miles per gallon of fuel, which feels adequate for a car of its size. 

The SUV features a fuel tank that has a total capacity of 22.4 gallons of fuel. Though not the largest tank on offer, courtesy of its better fuel efficiency the BMW X5 manages one of the best fuel ranges in the segment covering 403.2 miles in the city and that of 604.8 miles on the highway.

In comparison, the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7 manage relatively lower fuel efficiency averaging a combined mileage of 17 and 18 MPG respectively. Incidentally, both cars feature a similar-sized fuel tank that has a total capacity of 26.4 gallons. Despite their larger fuel tanks, they manage a lower range because of their relatively lower fuel efficiency.

The major updates that come with the 2014 BMW X5 are the restructured cabin. The interior quality on the new X5 feels palatial and ostentatious. Step inside the X5 and the first thing that grabs attention is the instrument cluster that feels much more refined. The central console features ample storage space with the central armrest separating the driver and passenger. As standard, the BMW features synthetic seat covers which feel lackluster for a car at its price. 

The seat may feel stiff, but thanks to its aplomb ride quality the overall feel in the cabin feels nourishing. The BMW X5 as standard can seat 5 passengers, however with optional third-row seats, the capacity can be increased to 7 passengers. Statistically, the BMW X5 has a total head-, shoulder- and legroom of 40.5/60.5/40.5 at the front and 38.8/58.3/36.6 at the rear. The X5 has a cargo capacity that can extend up to 76.7 cubic feet with the rear seat folded.

The Audi Q7 is the only car in the segment that features a third-row of seats and can accommodate 7 passengers. In terms of overall space, all three cars have a minimal difference. The inherent advantage that BMW gains over the two cars are because of its cargo capacity. The Q7 has a total capacity of 72.5 cubic feet, while the Porsche lags considerably behind its competitors at 62.9 cubic feet.

How intuitive is the BMW X5’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system on the BMW X5 is spontaneous and instinctive. As standard, the X5 receives AM/FM stereo, HD radio, auxiliary audio output, and smart device integration. The BMW gets a navigation system and onboard hands-free communication.

The latest iteration of the BMW X5 vaunts modernized styling that puts it neck and neck with the competitors in the segment. The X5 uses the same structural base as its predecessors but feels improved because of its refinement and sublimity. Garnering attention up front is the new grille and HID headlights. 

The new LED taillights add a lot of depth to the overall designing characteristics; however, the wheels do feel small for a car of its size. The BMW X5 stands at a total length of 193.2 inches and a wheelbase of 115.5 inches. Its total length and height measured at 76.3 and 69.4 inches respectively. The X5 has a total ground clearance of 8.2 inches that allows the car to tread over uneven patches without any difficulty and weighs 4790 lbs.

In the segment, the Audi Q7 is the heaviest car in the segment at 5192 lbs. It is also the longest and widest car in the segment at 200.3 and 78.1 inches. The Porsche Cayenne is the lightest car at 4398 lbs. Both cars have similar ground clearances at 8.1 inches. The Q7’s total length allows it to have the longest wheelbase at 118.2 inches.

With an extensive list of active and passive safety features, the new BMW X5 promises to be a safe and reliable car. While NHTSA ratings are not available, the X5 receives a rating of good in the IIHS crash tests. Standard safety features on the BMW X5 include airbags for the driver and passengers, traction control, and electronic stability control. The BMW X5 with its modernized, decent fuel economy and dependable features promises to be quite the car. Though the X5 seems faultless, its third seat feels constrained, and at $52,600, the SUV is pricey. But everything from the potent engine to the safety adequately justifies the price and we feel it is an A-1 offering.
