Overall Rating
The original 500 was made in Europe for the European cities that have small streets and small distances between two destinations.
The original 500 was made in Europe for the European cities that have small streets and small distances between two destinations. Fiat knew this car would not satisfy the American market and hence introduced the Fiat 500L. Compared to the 2-door Fiat 500, the 500L is a compelling option with that extra space it offers. In an age where not many people look at tall station wagons, the 500L makes you think that once again. However, a closer look at the car shows a lot of negatives as well.
Since Fiat has offered four attractive options in the lineup, we will go with the Trekking trim. One can get additional packages for a better experience inside the car. The upgrades to the exterior, interior, and infotainment system can change the experience of this car. We also recommend the sunroof and the spare tire among the stand-alone options. In a tight situation, the tire can come in very handy.

The 500L offers a single engine, a 1.4L Inline-4 which makes 160 hp @5,500 rpm and 184 lb.-ft @2,500 rpm. It comes with a 6-speed manual transmission which did not live up to our expectations.
During our drive, we felt the 6-speed manual was quirky in the way it operated and was a distraction during the drive. The 500L is a front-wheel-drive car. The 500L touches the 60 mph mark in 8.5 seconds and completes the quarter-mile in 16.6 seconds.

The 500L returns good numbers but not very impressive. It falls behind the Kia in the 0-60 mph time and in the quarter-mile time too. The Kia is much better equipped, which gives it an edge over the Fiat. The Nissan was left long behind in this race, falling short by nearly 2 seconds in the 0-60 mph. The top speed on the Fiat is pretty healthy at 120 mph.
Fiat’s fuel economy is on the better side in this car segment. With figures of 25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, it impressed us. Combined, the Fiat 500L offers a decent mileage of 28 mpg. It has a healthy tank size of 13 gallons. The other two cars also have similar tank sizes, where the Kia keeps an edge with its larger 14.2 gallons of fuel tank.

The range on the 500L is exceptionally good at 390 miles in the city and 436 miles out on the highway. This is because of the refined 1.4 L engine it offers. The Kia Soul has the least range in the city at 326.6 miles in comparison. However, its highway range is slightly more than that of the 500L. The Nissan Cube has the least highway range but has a middle ground in the city mileage, which is slightly better than the Soul.
The 500L is a tall car. Its large doors, a straight roofline, and high-mounted seats make getting in the car an easy task. The dashboard design of the 500L is contemporary and fresh, and with the large windows, it suits well in this light-filled interior.
The dual-gauge instrument cluster looks modern, and the dials deliver needed information clearly. The padded upper dash is particularly nice in this class, as is the generously sized infotainment interface. The stalks, buttons, and levers have a hollow feel that does not impart a sense of quality. The material does not feel premium and reminds you of the methods of cost-cutting.

However, the interior of this car is very roomy. It’s even more obvious in the rear seat, as the wide car allows for comfortable seating for 3 people in the back with immense legroom to stretch your legs. The 500L’s trunk storage is massive but stands behind the segment-leading offering by Soul. The Nissan’s trunk is too small, and you can hardly fit a large suitcase inside. Some standout interior features on the 500L include:
The 500L’s infotainment system packs a punch, and we really liked it. It is very well loaded, and the optional upgrades make it better. As standard, you get a six-speaker CD stereo with a 5-inch touchscreen display, USB/iPod integration, auxiliary input, and voice control for audio functions, and Bluetooth phone & audio connectivity.
An optional Premium package offers a larger 6.5” touchscreen interface with a navigation system. Another optional package gives you the more powerful Beats Audio Group, which adds an upgraded amplifier and a subwoofer. Some standout infotainment features include:
The 2014 500L exterior styling surely does get a few heads to turn around, some in admiration and others in disgust as well. The design is very unique and is hard to appeal to everyone. However, it does tend to grow on you slowly, and then you start noticing the beauty of this design. The tall stance, straight roof, large windows, and that large windshield makes the car look bigger than what it is.
The design gets its inspiration cues from the 500, and we really like it. You can’t really make out from some angles that this is a wagon-sized car. It has got the front shaped like the face of a bull-dog, and the oval headlamps suit the curves of the car. At the rear, the design is simple and neat, with just two oval taillamps.

The 500L’s proportions are something we’ve talked about, and we really liked it. The width of the car is not class-leading, but on the interior, you get enough shoulder space. It is tight enough to go through traffic, but the length makes you think that twice. The Kia is the lightest car in this comparison, and that explains its performance figures. Some noteworthy exterior features of the 500L are:
The 500L scored a rating of 4-stars in the crash tests conducted by the NHTSA. As standard, all trims come with seven standard airbags, stability control, and active headrests. The IIHS called it a Top Safety Pick for the year 2014. A rear-view camera is available, along with rear parking sensors. Some standout safety specifications include:
The 2014 500L is a very well-made car and is simple, big, and usable. It has a good economy, stylish interiors, and the engine packs a punch. It is priced reasonably and goes up against a couple of the best cars in this segment. However, we leave the decision to you as there are a few better offerings out there in this segment.
